2001 Toyota Sequoia Problems

While driving my 2001 Sequoia SR5 with only 74,750 miles on freeways at speeds between 55 and 65 mph, the SUV's braking system activates unexpectedly and without cause. The VSC check engine lighting and warning sound illuminate. My SUV veered to the right, the steering wheel vibrated, and it went into a skid when the brakes were abruptly engaged, causing it to skid. My SUV abruptly decelerated as if it had lost power. This situation was hazardous for other vehicles who could not tell if they were applying the brakes due to the absence of visible brake lights to prevent a collision. Fortunately, I responded defensively and avoided collisions with other vehicles and roadside obstacles. This issue is a safety concern; if it occurs at the wrong moment, a tragedy can be avoided. I've seen more than a hundred complaints from other proprietors and a completed NHTSA investigation. Sequoia models from 2001 and subsequent years were recalled for the same issue. Before a life is lost, Toyota must address this issue in all model years.

Vsc tracking lights and check engine

I own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia SR5, which I purchased new in Colorado and moved to Virginia in 2004. I received a Toyota Limited Service Campaign Program notice in 2013 about excessive corrosion on the frame. Alexandria Toyota inspected the vehicle and applied a Corrosion-Resistant Compound to the frame. They also replaced the spare tire carrier assembly due to rusting. Over the years, I've had mechanics mention the rust on the frame but Toyota never issued a recall on the 2001 Sequoia. In November 2024, the following dashboard lights remained on while driving: Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) OFF, VSC TRAC and Brake Lights. I took it to Steven’s Auto Clinic in Alexandria. They found low brake fluid levels were causing the brake system failure. The brake pipes are leaking due to heavy rust. In addition, rust was destroying the under carriage. The brake system and frame would require extensive maintenance. They warned me NOT to drive the car. They refilled the brake fluid to allow me to take the car home. Reading the Complaints under Structure on the NHTSA website, dozens of customers over the years mention serious rusting on the frame of their 2001 Sequoias. I believe Toyota had a recall to replace the frame on the Tundra but never included the 2001 Sequoia even though it was built on the Tundra frame. I now have a vehicle I can’t drive, due to safety concerns, and I can’t sell, except for parts. The Sequoia should have been included in the Tundra recall. Toyota needs to be held accountable. I can provide any paperwork for my 2001 Sequoia including the Limited Service Campaign Program notice and the repair order from Stephen’s Auto Clinic if necessary. I can also provide the vehicle for inspection.

The contact stated that the vehicle was at the dealer for a diagnostic test; however, the dealer declined to perform the diagnostic test, stating that the sub frame was unstable, and an unknown recall campaign had expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated the dealer informed him there was a recall for the sub frame, however, the recall had expired. The failure mileage was unknown.

I have changed tires 2 times but I did not know that my sequoia has a recalled from the suspension and it seems to me that all the suspension is out eventhough that I replaced the struts upper and lower balljoint side arm rod tide even the racquet pinion may be out please help with the nesessary repair driving it like that I’m putting my family at having a accident cause the tire do not wear properly sincerely Joseluis saldana

Complete failure and separation of the lower ball joint. Caused the wheel to fall off, damaging the front fender and jamming the front door making the door stuck closed. Fortunate we did not crash into anything and kill anyone. A very close call.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURES RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,056.

I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. I GOT MY SEQUOIA BRAND NEW AND NOW HAS OVER 88,000 MILES. MY SEQUOIA BEGAN TO GIVE ME TROUBLE ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO EVERYTIME I TRIED TO PUT IT INTO GEAR. THE GEAR FELT TIGHT ALMOST DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO GEAR. ON A RECENT TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO, I BEGAN TO ALSO NOTICE A "BUZZING" SOUND ON THE GAS PEDAL. AS I WAS DRIVING UP THE GRAPEVINE ON INTERSTATE 5, MY TRANSMISSION "POPPED" AND I HAD NO POWER. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE DRIVE PIN BROKE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION AND CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGED TO THE TRANSMISSION. AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED MY WIFE AND TWO YOUNG KIDS WERE WITH ME. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY WE DID NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS MAJOR BREAKDOWN. I HAVE COME TO RELY ON MY VEHICLE AND HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD AT KEEPING IT TUNED AND GETTING THE REQUIRED SERVICES TO KEEP MY CAR IN SHAPE. The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, he became aware of a cranking sound and the vehicle suddenly started jerking and shaking. An unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired, and the front wheel speed sensor was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated the failure had gotten worse over time. The contact also stated that while searching online, he became aware that the failure was a common failure with similar vehicles. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or local dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 181,000.

THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON AND ARE STAY ON UNTIL THE ENGINE IS SHUT DOWN. SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS COME ON AS SOON AS STARTUP. SOMETIMES WHEN IDLING. SUSPENSION IS VERY STIFF, AND STEERING SEEMS AFFECTED AS WELL AS ENGINE SEEMS TO LUG WHEN DRIVING AND THE LIGHTS COME ON.

Rear axle is rusted to the point where differential fluid is leaking out of the body. There is extreme rust in general which has led to the failure of multiple components such as the oil pressure sending unit. Check engine light is on. This hasn't been verified by a shop or agency, only by me. These issues were discovered shortly after purchase this year.

MY 2001 SEQUOIA (151,000 MI) WHICH HAS BEEN GARAGED AND MAINTAINED METICULOUSLY IS SUDDENLY SHOWING THE VSC LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS AT THE SAME TIME! THERE IS A VERY ROUGH FEELING WHEN I'M DRIVING THE CAR LIKE SOMETHING IN THE UNDERCARRIAGE IS VERY WRONG. THERE IS A "CLUNKING" NOISE AS SLOW AS 5 MPH AT ALL TIMES AND ALL SPEEDS. AT HIGH SPEEDS, THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY PULL TO THE LEFT MOMENTARILY AND THEN RELEASE ITSELF BUT THE LIGHTS NEVER GO OUT UNLESS CAR IS OFF. I HAVE READ THE 138 COMPLAINTS AT THE DOT.GOV SITE ABOUT THIS EXACT PROBLEM AND THUS FAR, TOYOTA CORP IS IGNORING THE COMPLAINTS.WHERE IS THE RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR TAILGATE LATCH BECAME FRACTURED AND AS A RESULT, IT PREVENTED HIM FROM OPENING THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,000.

The tread came off on the freeway. The actual tire is still in tact. The tread flew off and ripped our bumper and quarter panel off. The back latch and window to open the vehicle to retrieve the spare no longer work. We are now concerned with the other tires quality and tread.

TIRES ROTATED AND FRONT END ALIGNMENT ACCOMPLISHED DUE TO UNEVEN WEAR ON FRONT TIRES. ON NOV 4, 2013, 400 MILES OF INTERSTATE DRIVING AFTER 9 OCT 2013 TIRE ROTATION/FRONT END ALIGNMENT, 7/5 TIRE TREAD SEPARATED ON INTERSTATE DAMAGING LEFT REAR WHEEL WELL, LEFT REAR QUARTER PANEL AND REAR BUMPER ($2500 DAMAGE). 11 APRIL 2014, APPROX 2500 MILES AFTER 9 OCT 2013 TIRE ROTATION/FRONT END ALIGNMENT, 8/5 TIRE TREAD SEPARATED ON INTERSTATE DAMAGING RIGHT REAR WHEEL WELL, RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL, RIGHT REAR DOOR AND REAR BUMPER (APPROX $2000 DAMAGE). CHECKING ON RECALL FOR AIR BAGS.

AIRBAG LIGHT WAS FLASHING MECHANIC DETERMINED THE CODE TO WAS B0132 SHORT IN PT SQUIB RIGHT CIRCUIT GROUND. TOYOTA DEALER DETERMINED THE CAUSE WAS A MECHANICAL FAILURE IN THE RIGHT SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY IN THE PASSENGER SIDE. ONCE THAT WAS REPLACED, THE ERROR PERSISTED AND DETERMINED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE SENSOR ALSO HAS TO BE REPLACED. AIRBAG SENSOR FAILURE IS COMMON IN MANY TOYOTA MODELS. HOWEVER, TOYOTA SAID THAT THE 2001 SEQUOIA IS NOT IN THE RECALL LIST.

MY 2001 SEQUOIA REAR HATCH WINDOW NO LONGER ROLLS DOWN NOR DOES THE REAR HATCH OPEN AT ALL. THIS HAPPENED OVERNIGHT. NOTHING PROMPT THIS ALL. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE $350 TO REPLACE THE DOOR. FRUSTRATING CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THIS FEELING. *TR

WHILE DRIVING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF INTERMITTENTLY. THE PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB

I BARELY TAPPED THR BACK OF AN OLD TOYOTA COROLLA AND AT A LOW SPEED WHERE NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO EITHER VEHICLE BESIDE MINE WHEN THE AIRBAGS UNNECESSARILY DEPLOYED AND SHATTERED MY WINDSHIELD. TESTERDAY I CALLED MY LOCAL TOYOTA INQUIRING ABOUT MY AIRBAGS PROBLEM AND THEY SAID YOURS WERE RECALLED NEW ONES ARE HERE BRING YOUR CAR HERE IN THE MORNING AND IT'LL TAKE ABOUT THREE HOURS TO FIX. I WAS EXCITED TO FINALLY GET SOMEWHERE WITH THIS ISSUE... THIS MORNING I TAKE MY CAR UP THERE AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT WASNT RECALLED AND TO CALL THE GUY WHO CANE DOWN AND INSPECTED IT. I WAS DROPPING OFF MY WIFE AND 4 MONTH-OLD TWINS @ THE AIRPORT. SHE WAS GOING ON A VACATION W/ HER MOM AND SISTERS. WHILE GETTING HER CHECKED IN, OUR 9-YEAR-OLD TWIN GIRLS AND 3 YEAR-OLD GIRL WERE SITTING IN THE CAR. WE WERE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAR BUT COULD NOT SEE IN THE BACK W/ THE DARK TINTED WINDOWS. IN THE MEAN TIME, ONE DAUGHTER, WHO WAS SITTING IN THE 3RD ROW, MIDDLE SEAT OF OUR 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, BECAME TANGLED IN THE AUTOMATICALLY LATCHED SEATBELT. AS SHE ATTEMPTED TO GET FREE, SHE ONLY GOT FURTHER TWISTED. HER TWIN SISTER THEN YELLED TO US, HER PARENTS. WE OPENED THE TRUNK AND FOUND HER PURPLE AND STRUGGLING TO BREATHE. THE WORST THING IS THAT WE COULDN'T UNLATCH THE BELT, NOR COULD WE UNTANGLE HER. WE STARTED YELLING FOR SOMETHING SHARP TO CUT THE BELT (THE AIRPORT IS NOT THE BEST PLACE TO FIND SOMETHING SHARP) AND AT THE SAME TIME WE GRABBED THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION TO ATTEMPT TO STICK INTO THE LATCH IN HOPES OF UNLATCHING THE BELT IN AN ALTERNATIVE WAY. IN WHAT SEEMED AN ETERNITY OF HELPLESSNESS, THE SKY CAP FOUND SCISSORS AND CUT THE BELT... AT THE SAME TIME, I RELEASED THE BELT FROM THE LATCH W/ THE HELP OF THE KEY. JUST AS OUR DAUGHTER PASSED OUT, WE WERE ABLE TO UNTANGLE HER FROM THE BELT. FORTUNATELY, WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY GET HER BREATHING AGAIN. POLICE AND PARAMEDICS WERE CALLED. A REPORT WAS FILED. ALL COMMENTED ON THE POOR DESIGN OF THIS MIDDLE BELT! HOPEFULLY OUR NEAR TRAGEDY WITH A HAPPY ENDING WILL PREVENT ANYONE ELSE FROM A TRAGIC ENDING! I BEGAN TO NOTICE OVER A YEAR AGO THAT THE HEADLIGHT HIGH-BEAM INDICATOR WAS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF INTERMITTENT OPERATION IT CEASED ILLUMINATING ALTOGETHER. MY LOCAL MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA HAD TOLD HIM THAT THE ENTIRE COMBINATION METER WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED TO REPAIR IT (THIS WAS NOT ENTIRELY ACCURATE). I RECENTLY FOUND ONLINE THAT A NUMBER OF OWNERS REPORTED THAT THEIR HIGH BEAM INDICATORS WERE NOT WORKING, AND THAT A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN HAD BEEN PUBLISHED TO REPAIR IT. WHEN I PULLED UP THE SERVICE BULLETIN I NOTED THAT IT REQUIRED A WIRING CHANGE IN ADDITION TO REPLACEMENT OF A VERY EXPENSIVE ECU. IT IS MY CONTENTION THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIR OF THIS EXPENSIVE MODIFICATION SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS WIRED IMPROPERLY TO BEGIN WITH AND SINCE THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL SAFETY IMPLICATIONS FOR VEHICLES DRIVING WITH HEADLIGHTS ON BRIGHT WHEN THE DRIVER IS NOT AWARE OF IT. *TR

I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUIOA THAT HAS A VIBRATION THAT COMES THROUGH THE ENTIRE FRONT DASH ESPECIALLY DURING DOWNHILL BRAKING. THE TSB IS SUPPOSEDLY FOR CARS UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY ONLY. HOWEVER, MINE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY WHEN THEY ISSUED THE TSB. I ALSO HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE THE VSC TRAC LIGHTS COMING ON FOR NO REASON AT ALL. ALSO, THE FOGLIGHT IN THE FRONT BUMPER HAS MOISTURE INSIDE OF IT THAT CANNOT BE REMOVED. THE LAST THING IS THE FEELING THAT SOMEONE HAS JUST BUMPED YOU FROM BEHIND WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. *AK

THE THROTTLE STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSITION WHILE WE WERE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY MAINTAINING 65 MPH. THE VSC AND ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. THERE WAS SUDDENLY NO ACCELERATION AND RESPONSE FROM THE PEDAL SO WE CAME TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE CAR IN DRIVE AND THE ENGINE STILL ON. I HAD A NEAR COLLISION WHEN THIS HAPPENED A WEEK PRIOR IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AND THE ACCELERATION WAS LOST. THIS IS FIXED TEMPORARILY BY TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN 5 MINUTES LATER. I HAD TO GET THE WHOLE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED. THIS HAPPENED AT 85,000 MILES. THIS HAPPENED WITH THE SAME VEHICLE AT 48,000 MILES 3 YEARS AGO AND THEY SEEMED TO FIX IT BY CLEANING THE THROTTLE CONTROL SENSOR REALLY GOOD. I'VE SEEN REPORTS OF OTHERS EXPERIENCING THIS AS WELL ON LINE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM...THANK GOD WE ARE STILL ALIVE! *TR

GAS GAUGE ERRONEOUSLY INDICATES NO FUEL IN GAS TANK (INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT, THAT HAPPENS WHEN FUEL LEVEL IS IN THE 2/3 TO 1/2 RANGE. PROBLEM LASTS FOR A SHORT WHILE AND WILL GO AWAY AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL IN THE TANK DROPS. TOYOTA DEALER STATES THAT THERE IS NO TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM. *AK

I HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT LAST SUMMER IN MAY THE AIR CONDITIONER NO LONGER WORKED. I TOOK IT TO MY GARAGE WHERE THEY DETERMINED THE COMPRESSOR NO LONGER WORKED. MILEAGE WAS 39,000 JUST OUT OF WARRANTY. THE WHOLE AC SYSTEM NEEDED REPLACING WHICH I DID NOT MIND BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET RID OF THE MOLD SMELL. MY GARAGE WAS ABLE TO FIND A USED SYSTEM WHICH I HAD PUT IN AT WHAT I CONSIDERED A VERY HIGH EXPENSE. ALMOST TO THE DAY MY AC HAS CRASHED AGAIN. I'M LOOKING INTO MY OPTIONS RIGHT NOW. THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM A YEAR APART WITH DIFFERENT SYSTEMS. LOOKS LIKE A LEMON TO ME. *AK
