What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Toyota Tacoma, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The passenger side lower A arm frame mount broke, due to frame rust. The truck has been taken to Toyota, they had the truck for about 6 weeks and have refused to fix the safety issue. This year model had a recall on the frame, it was taken in for the recall, but the recall has failed. When the lower A arm frame mount broke, I just happened to be in a parking lot. If I had been driving it, I could have killed someone, or could have been killed myself.
2010 Toyota Tacoma with 91K miles have frame corrosion and now has holes. I contacted Toyota motor sales USA, Inc. and informed them why I NEVER received a recalled and they said it was mailed May 2019 and expired in 2022-there’s nothing they can do and if I went to the dealership for my inspections they would of known of the recall instead of going to an independent dealer. I’ve attached current photos showing the extent of corrosion over the years. Unbelievable, the recall should still be open.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
the gas gauge on the dashboard does not work properly
THE VEHICLES STABILITY CONTROL ENGAGES WHEN TAKING SHARP CORNERS, LIKE CURVY HIGHWAYS. WHEN THE STABILITY CONTROL ENGAGES IT LOCKS THE TIRES UP TRYING TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE VEHICLE FORCING THE VEHICLE INTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE OR OFF THE ROAD. I HAVE TO FIGHT THE VEHICLE JUST TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. IT HAS SCARED SOME OF MY PASSENGERS TO THE POINT THAT THEY WON'T RIDE IN MY VEHICLE ANYMORE. I HAVE HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER SIMILAR TOYOTA'S IN MY AREA. THIS INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED MANY TIMES SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while the vehicle was with an independent mechanic for a scheduled service, the contact was informed that the frame underneath the engine was rusted. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that an unknown recall associated with the failure had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
I am the original owner of a 2010 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport, 4 door, 4WD, with a 6' bed, VIN # [XXX] , with 215902 miles. During the replacement of the leaf springs on 1/27/26, under recall #14V-604, I was informed by the Toyota dealership that installed the leaf springs that there was extensive corrosion on various points on the frame to the point where it was unsafe to drive. The frame has developed severe perforation and rust-through. There are large holes in the frame, and sections missing. The corrosion is spreading across multiple points, making the vehicle unsafe and at risk of structural failure while driving. I called Toyota and they said the frame recall expired in 2022. I will be asking Toyota if they will still replace the frame as a "Goodwill " replacement. I told Toyota that I was never made aware of this recall or warranty extension and never received any letter regarding it. I did receive other recall notices for this VIN but none for the frame issues. I am waiting for a response from Toyota on what action they will take, if any, to support their product. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLE WHICH INCLUDED THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNAL HAD OVER HEATED CAUSING THE LIGHT HOUSING TO BECOME DISCOLORED AND THE BULB HAD SHATTERED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE LIGHTS AND HAD FAILED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER TOYOTA OF BROOK HEAVEN LOCATED AT 890 BROOKWAY BLVD, BROOKHAVEN, MS 39601 MS. WHO REPAIRED THE FAILURE BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000. *BF*JB
"TAKATA RECALL" THE YELLOW PART OF THE HEADLIGHT HAS MELTED CRACKING BOTH LENSES INSIDE, WAS TOLD BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP/CRBIN, KY THE RECALL WAS OVER AND I WAS TOO LATE TO HAVE BOTH HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES REPLACED. I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANYTHING IN THE MAIL ABOUT A RECALL, NOTHING FROM THE DEALER TO LET ME KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE LIGHTS. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN OHIO, BUT I LIVE IN KY
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken for State Inspection however, the vehicle failed the inspection due to cracks to the driver’s and passenger’s side sub frame, and corroded brake lines. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that both the driver’s and passenger’s side sub frame and brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. An undisclosed dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that an unstated recall had expired, and the previous vehicle owner was notified, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
Stepping on the break sometimes I have a good firm brake pedal others seem to go almost to the floor. Talking with a mechanic he had told me that there was numerous Toyota tacomas with the same issue. I have tried bleeding the brakes and still have the same symptoms I would think this would be a safety issue.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Our son hit a guardrail and the airbags didn't deploy. Accident and failure was reported to insurance company
MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR OTHER TOYOTA TACOMAS FOR AN AIR BAG SPIRAL ASSEMBLY HOWEVER MY MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A TOYOTA DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE CABLE AND CONNECTIONS WERE RUSTY AND THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT FUNCTION IN A CRASH UNLESS THE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. I PAID OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE THE CABLE REPLACED.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE TRANSMISSION, WHILE DRIVING, HAS A JERKY SHIFTING MOTION. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN STOPPED AT LETS SAY A RED LIGHT, THE TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO DRIVING AWAY, WILL SEEM LIKE IT ENGAGES WITH AN EXTREME JERKING MOTION, ALMOST FEELING LIKE YOU'VE BEEN REAR ENDED.
WHILE DRIVING AT 40MPH THE FRONT JOINT OF THE PROPELLER SHAFT BROKED AWAY AND THE PROPPELLER FALLED AWAY FROM THE TRUCK, HITTING AND DAMAGING OTHER TRUCK'S COMPONENTS UNTIL STOPING
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
SINCE THIS VEHICLE HAD 5000 MILES ON IT I HAVE HAD CLUTCH ISSUES. HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 5 TIMES FOR CLUTCH ISSUES AND IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP NOW. THE CLUTCH IS BURNING UP, THOUGHT THE TRUCK WAS GOING TO CATCH FIRE A FEW WEEKS AGO. THERE HAS BEEN A TSB ON THIS ISSUE AND THEY REPLACED EVERYTHING ON THE LAST SERVICE. IT HAS FAILED AGAIN WITH ON 3,000 MILES ON THIS NEW CLUTCH. THE VEHICLE IS A LITTLE OVER 1 YEAR OLD AND CURRENTLY HAS 23,000 MILES ON IT. TOYOTA IS GIVING ME THE RUN A ROUND AND NOW WANTS ME TO PAY FOR WARRANTY WORK. I HAVE REPEATEDLY TOLD THEM THEY HAVE A WEAK DESIGN CLUTCH, MADE FOR A 2 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE IN A 4X4 TRUCK. WE THINK THE CLUTCH SLIPPED SO MUCH A FEW AGO IT REALLY DID CATCH FIRE, IT SMOKED FOR 10 MINUTES AFTER I TURNED THE TRUCK OFF. I HAVE FILED WITH THE HOUSTON BBB AND FILED WITH TOYOTA. I NEED HELP *JS
MY 2010 TACOMA, WHILE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, SUDDENLY SURGES AS IF SOMEBODY HIT THE GAS OR SLAMMED ME IN THE REAR. IT HASN'T PUSHED ME BEYOND MY BRAKES BUT IT IS VERY DISTURBING. I REPORTED THIS TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T REPRODUCE IT. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN WITH ANY REGULARITY, IT JUST HAPPENS OUT OF THE BLUE. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN YOU GO TO VERY LOW SPEEDS AND MAKE A SHARP TURN THE RPMS JUMP TO ABOUT 3,000 AND THEN IT FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION KICKS IN. THIS WAS ALSO REPORTED TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS BY DESIGN BUT IF IT IS IT IS POOR DESIGN. *TR
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON 1/2/18 I WAS DRIVING INTO A PARKING LOT GOING SLOW GETTING READY TO PUT MY TRUCK INTO REVERSE TO BACK UP INTO A SPOT WHEN SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION TOOK PLACE. MY TRUCK WOULD NOT STOP ACCELERATING FORWARD WITH MY RIGHT FOOT PRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE BRAKE MY TRUCK CONTINUED TO REV UP AND JUMP FORWARD WITH TIRES RUBBER BURNING DUE TO ME HAVING MY FOOT ON BREAK TRYING TO STOP THE TRUCK. I MISSED HITTING A CAR BARELY AND STILL NOT SURE HOW I MISSED IT. MY FOOT WAS CLEARLY ON THE BRAKE THE ENTIRE TIME AND FINALLY I PUT MY TRUCK IN PARK AND THE TRUCK CAME TO A STOP, SINCE I WAS NOT GOING DOWN A HIGHWAY. I REPORTED TO TOYOTA AND GOT NO WHERE. I HAVE NO FLOOR MAT IN MY TRUCK SO CANT BLAME IT ON FLOOR MAT. THEY ARE CLAIMING IT WAS MISAPPLICATION OF PEDAL. THIS IS A TOTAL LIE. I WOULD OF HIT THAT CAR HAD MY FOOT BEEN ON WRONG PEDAL. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE SO HARD AND PUTTING IN PARK STOPPED THE TRUCK. AGAIN COULD HEAR THE ENGINE REV AS IF STUCK IN ACCELERATION AND MY TIRES BURNING RUBBER AS I CONTINUED TO ENGAGE BRAKE AND TRUCK WAS JUMPING FORWARD. TOYOTA HAS OPENED A CASE BUT AGAIN REFUSE TO ADMIT TO ANY PROBLEM BLAMING IT ON MISAPPLICATION OF PEDAL. KERRY TOYOTA FLORENCE KY INSISTS THEY DID INSPECTION BUT REFUSE TO SHOW ME ANY RESULTS FROM INSPECTION JUST SAY THEY INSPECTED PEDAL AND FLOOR MAT, WHICH THERE IS NO FLOOR MAT. I AM NOT CONVINCED THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT. TOYOTA CORPORATION AGAIN AWARE OF OTHER CASES BUT STILL REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM. I AM SCARED NOW DRIVING WONDERING WHEN OR IF WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP AND CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING DOWN AN INCLINE. THE RPMS INCREASED WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED NORMALLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IT SOUNDED AS IF THE THROTTLE WAS STUCK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 67,500.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.

PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT BUCKLE LATCH IS ASSEMBLED BACKWARDS. NOTE THIS IS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE I BOUGHT IN NOV 2016, WITH 41,000 MILES FROM CARLSON TOYOTA. I JUST NOTICED THE ISSUE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT FRACTURED. THE CONTACT CALLED CENTENNIAL TOYOTA (LOCATED ON 6551 CENTENNIAL CENTER BLVD, LAS VEGAS, NV 89149) WHO STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD BE CHARGED FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE CHARGED FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V337000 (SEAT BELTS); HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN.

THE HVAC FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BURNED AND MELTED. I COULD SMELL BURNING INSIDE MY TRUCK. MY MECHANIC FOUND THE HVAC BLOWER FAN CONNECTION HAD BEEN SO HOT IT BURNED AND MELTED ALONG WITH THE RESISTOR. SOME OF THE WIRES WERE BLACK AND BROWN. I WAS WORRIED THE TRUCK WAS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE! THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. AFTER LOOKING ONLINE I FOUND I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS HAD THIS HAPPEN! TOYOTA DENIED THE PROBLEM. *TR
A TRUCK PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME AT INTERSECTION RT 46 ON 07/31/13. I WENT TO BEEP THE HORN AND IT DIDN'T WORK.I WASN'T ABLE TO CONFIRM PROBLEM BECAUSE VERY BUSY TILL 11/04/13. CONFIRMED PROBLEM CAUSED BY FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE WITHIN THE STEERING WHEEL. AS PER CONVERSATION WITH TOYOTA 1-800-331-4331 ON 11/04/13 (CASE #1311040283) TO HAVE DEALER CONFIRM PROBLEM WITH AS I UNDERSTOOD WOULD WARRANTY PART ONLY, PROBLEM CONFIRMED BY DEALER 12/09/13,TOYOTA, [XXX] CALLED DECLINED GOODWILL WARRANTY.I REPLACED SPIRAL CABLE AT MY EXPENSE, HORN NOW WORKS. THE SPIRAL CABLE ALSO CONTAIN WITHIN IT WIRES FOR STEERING RADIO CONTROLS, THE AIR BAG AND THE HORN. AS BAD WEATHER APPROACHED THE LACK OF A WORKING HORN BECAME A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. TOYOTA RECALLED ALL 05 TO 09 (495,000 ) TACOMA FOR THE SAME PART# SPIRAL CABLE ( AIRBAG ) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

From owner reports, verbatim
the gas gauge on the dashboard does not work properly
MANUFACTURER RECALL #F0U, DEALERSHIP REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTER BUT THEIR MECHANIC DAMAGED THE FUEL SENSOR THAT SCREWS INTO IT. NOW THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT STAYS ON, TRACTION CONTROL IS DISABLED. I HAVE BEEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES BUT THEY REFUSE TO MAKE REPAIRS. THE MANAGER IS ABUSIVE.

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING, IT STARTED TO RAIN. NATURALLY I FLIPPED THE WIPERS ON. THE WIPERS STALLED AND STARTED THEN QUIT, MID-WIPE. WIPER MOTOR QUIT. IT ACTED FROZEN, IT SQUEAKED AND STALLED HALF-WAY THROUGH A WIPE ACTION. HAD TO PULL OFF BECAUSE VISIBILITY WAS POOR. GOT OUT, TRIED TO HELP THE WIPER ARM MOVE. THE MOTOR SQUEAKED. THE WIPERS WOULD NOT OPERATE AND WOULD NOT MOVE FROM ITS MID-WINDSHIELD LOCATION. WAITED UNTIL THE RAIN PASSED TO BEGIN DRIVING AGAIN. BECAUSE IT RAINS SO OFTEN HERE, THE WIPERS ARE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT, FOR SAFETY AND VISIBILITY. AN INOPERABLE WIPER SYSTEM RENDERS THE TRUCK INOPERABLE, IN OTHER WORDS USELESS. *TR
