2000 Toyota Tundra Problems

2000 toyota tundra SR5 4door 4.7 liter V8. Sunroof glass blew off on freeway at 65mph almost hit car behind me. No police report, no person injured. November 3, 2025.

Excessive frame rust that is quickly progressing despite efforts to remedy. There was a recall due to this issue but I was told a few years ago by Toyota that my VIN was not covered. All the 2000 Tundra's have this issue with the frame rust but I was told I am not in the north east and would not be covered.

The brackets supporting the right rear brake line were severely rusted and failed. The brake line cracked at the juncture of the wheel cylinder attachment nut. Subsequently,there was a total loss of braking action on all wheels. The dual cylinder master cylinder failed to actuate the front brakes.THERE WAS NO BRAKING ACTION. The emergency brake had to be deployed in order to stop the vehicle.

When I drive my vehicle it is difficult to apply the brakes on it and I feel like if I press too hard (which might be necessary if I need to suddenly stop) that the brakes might break or fail somehow. I have also noticed that underneath my truck, the frame is rotting out in certain areas and the leafs (steel long plates near the rear of the vehicle) is bending out of shape. There is a clanking noise near the front of the vehicle that concerns me as well when I pass through a small bump.

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the front end of the vehicle while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with upper and lower ball joints failure. The contact was informed that the upper and lower ball joints and the axle needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.

On February 19, 2026, I contacted Hendrick Toyota Apex (1210 Laura Village Rd, Apex, NC 27523) to schedule repair for two open safety recalls on my 2000 Toyota Tundra (VIN: [XXX] ) under NHTSA Campaign #09V444, Toyota Campaigns BXD and BZD. The dealership incorrectly refused to perform either recall, stating that neither could be done in North Carolina because they only apply to cold climate states. This is incorrect — Campaign BZD was specifically created as a supplemental campaign to allow Toyota dealers outside the 20 cold climate states to inspect and repair covered vehicles. I was turned away on my first call. Only after calling back a second time to lodge a complaint did a different representative look up the recalls and confirm that Campaign BZD can in fact be performed at their location. Had I accepted the initial refusal, I would have been denied a free safety recall repair on a vehicle with 255,656 miles and visible frame corrosion. The dealership's staff appear to be untrained on recall Campaign BZD and are likely turning away other affected Tundra owners. I have call recordings documenting the incorrect refusal. I am requesting NHTSA review this dealership's handling of recall #09V444 to ensure other consumers are not wrongly denied safety recall service. Perforated exhaust manifolds

PASSENGER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WARPING CAUSING LEAK WHICH IN TURN CAUSING VEHICLE TO RUN IMPROPERLY AND EFFECTING PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY ISSUE. ENGAGING ACCELERATOR WITH THE LEAK CAUSES VEHICLE TO SPUTTER AND LOSES POWER MAKING VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE.

Lower ball joints must be replaced under a recall. Toyota has told me to contact you to look into it for me and to ask them to recall the part in question for my vehicle. My vehicle is a 2000 Tundra. Models from 2001-06 had a recall for lower ball joints. My truck has the exact same faulty part numbers as the later models. Part numbers are: 43340, 43330 for left and right. This part failing leads to catastrophic failures that causes the entire front end to fall to the ground and the wheels to smash into the fender wells. My truck has very low mileage and is starting to show signs of this failure. My biggest concern is safety especially with an older vehicle. A quick search on the internet will show you this happening to countless other 2000 tundras. This vehicle has been well cared for but this doesn’t fall under routine maintenance when the part has these known issues. WHEN THE BALL JOINT FAILED I WAS LUCKILY TRAVELING 25-30 MPH TO GET ON TO THE FREEWAY, BUT IT FAILED BEFORE I WAS AT FULL HIGHWAY SPEED. I SPOKE TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HERE AND THEY CLAIM THAT THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT INCLUDE 2000-2001 YEAR TUNDRA'S, WHICH IS CONCLUSIVE OF THE RESEARCH I DID PREVIOUSLY. I ALSO CHECKED ON THE DESIGN OF THE BALL JOINTS AND THE DESIGN IS IDENTICAL BETWEEN 2000-2002. YET THE DEALER REFUSES TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR TO THE DAMAGE THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY THE FAULTY LOWER BALL JOINT.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT ALSO ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO PARK AND THE GEAR SHIFTER FRACTURED IN HIS HAND. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WOULD NOT FULLY SHIFT INTO PARK. THE CONTACT STATED THE SHIFTER WAS RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY TWO COMPONENTS THAT WOULD NEED REPAIRS. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO RECALL THE NAME OF THE COMPONENTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT WOULD PROVIDE NO ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 180,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45-50 MPH HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE LEFT REAR SPRING BROKE WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STOP IMMEDIATELY. HE ENGAGED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND HEARD ANOTHER LOUD NOISE AND COASTED THE VEHICLE INTO A PARKING LOT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED HIM THAT IT WOULD BE 3 MONTHS BEFORE THEY COULD REPAIR HIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE BACK LOG OF RECALLS. THE DEALER PERFORMED THE RECALL WORK ON HIS VEHICLE ON AUGUST 23, 2010; RECALL 09V444000, STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMBERS:UNDERBODY SHIELDS. AS HE WAS DRIVING FROM THE DEALERSHIP HE ENGAGED THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR; HE INFORMED THE SERVICE MANAGER OF THE FAILURE. THE SERVICE MANAGER ADVISED THE TECHNICIANS TO CLEAN, ADJUST THE REAR BRAKES AND RELIEVE SOME TENSION ON THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE DEALER ADVISED HIM THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE DEALER WAITING FOR THE PARTS TO BE AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,168 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 102,192.

THE CONTACT LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE SHIFTER WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE GEAR SELECTOR WOULD NOT MOVE TO THE DESIRED GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THE RUST, AND THAT THE BRAKE LINE AND SHIFTER CABLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. GRAHAM TOYOTA (1515 W 4TH ST, MANSFIELD, OH 44906, (419) 529-1800) WAS CALLED AND STATED THAT THE FRAME WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED PER AN UNKNOWN RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

WHILE DRIVING ON A COUNTRY HIGHWAY, THE DRIVE POWER OF THE ENGINE STALLED, EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE CONTINUED. APPEARS TO BE A REPETATIVE PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL OF TRUCK.

I HAD MY VEHICLE INSPECTED AS PART OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN INVOLVING EXCESSIVE RUST. HOWEVER, THE REQUIRED WORK TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK STRAPS AND CRC COATING WAS NOT DONE. NOW, DEALER RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE TRUCK HAS BEEN SERVICED UNDER THE RECALL, AND I CAN'T HAVE THE WORK DONE. WHILE MY TRUCK IS NOT NOW IN A COLD CLIMATE STATE, IT WAS ORIGINALLY SOLD AND OWNED IN ONE.

DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 12/24 AND 12/27 IN MEDIUM TRAFFIC. LOST GAS PEDAL. ENGINE STILL IDLING BUT PEDAL WOULDN'T WORK. TURNED CAR OFF THEN BACK ON PEDAL WAS BACK.

Hit a power pole going 55mp,broke the pole in half.Airbags did not deploy,seat belt did not engage.I hit my face on the glass and the steering wheel,nearly broke my face.My dog was in the back thankfully.My hips took the brunt of the impact, they still hurt. A Idaho state trooper investigated with video showing our totaled truck around a broken pole, no air bag or seat belt employed,My smashed face covered in blood. Did a little research and found that our 2000 tundra isnt in a recall???What does it take to set off a tundra airbag?? Also found out that I should be thankful it didnt go off or I may have been injured by a discharge of schrapnel??Found several victims of that. My wife takes a blood thinner and often goes with me to town,but now shes not going to be able to safely ride in her own vehicle anymore?? This reminds me of how CPS drops the ball and just lets kids die before they ever do anything. I will be doing alot more with my pen as my sword my video as my witness,I loved my tundra but this is more way more dangerous than my 1990 truck with basic mechanics.If you have a tundra or other vehicle that is dangerous ,speak out about it,get an attorney,Save SOMEONES LIFE.These are dangerous airbags,no doubt in my mind. 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. CONSUMER STATED THAT DURING AN AUTO ACCIDENT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER THE CRASH, HE HAD TO HAVE EXTENSIVE DECOMPRESSION SURGERY. THE CONSUMER STATED HE BROKE HIS BACK AND BADLY DAMAGED HIS NECK. THE CONSUMER WAS PERMANENTLY DISABLED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE.

USING THE SPARE TIRE ON REAR PASSENGER SIDE DUNLOP TG35 GRANDTREK 265 70 R16 THE TIRE WAS LIKE NEW. TREAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. GAINED CONTROL AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. NO TREAD...BUT REMAINING TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED...WITH STEEL BELT SHOWING. DID DAMAGE TO INSIDE FENDER WELL....FENDER....TORE OFF MUD FLAP AND DAMAGED BLACK PLASTIC FENDER WELL COVER. I CHANGED TIRE. *TR

IN JUNE 2010 MY TUNDRA WAS REPAIRED AFTER BEING RECALLED FOR A SEVERELY RUSTED FRAME AND SPARE TIRE HOUSING. WHAT SIGNALED THE PROBLEM WAS WHEN MY SPARE TIRE DROPPED FROM THE MOUNT AND WAS DANGLING ABOVE THE GROUND CAUSING ME TO ALMOST LOOSE CONTROL ON AN OFF RAMP. THE FIRST DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND TOLD ME "THE FRAME IS SO RUSTED I CAN PUT A SCREWDRIVER THRU IT". HE THEN ALLOWED ME TO DRIVE HOME. ON A SECOND OPINION, THE TRUCK WAS PULLED OFF THE ROAD . WHEN I PICKED UP THE TRUCK FOLLOWING THE REPAIRS THE SPARE WAS IN TRUCKBED AND I HAD TO ASK FOR IT TO BE INSTALLED. ( HAD THEY EVEN LOOKED AT IT?) )N 1/25/13 WHILE PUMPING GAS, I LOOK BEHIND THE VEHICLE AND SEE THE SPARE TIRE ON THE GROUND! THE PLATE THAT HOLDS THE TIRE WAS WORN AWAY. I CONTACTED TOYOTA WHO TOLD ME THAT THESE THINGS CAN HAPPEN IN COLDER CLIMATES BUT WHEN PRESSED SHE SAID THAT I COULD GET IT INSPECTED AND ALSO HAVE THE FUEL TANK STRAPS INSPECTED AS THERE HAD BE RUST ISSUES WITH THESE ON THE 2000 TUNDRA. WHEN I ASKED IF THERE WOULD BE A RECALL OR NOTIFICATION, I WAS TOLD NO. THIS IS APPALLING. THE TIRE EASILY COULD HAVE FALLEN OFF WHILE BEING DRIVEN AND NOW A FUEL TANK HOLDER MAY BE RUSTED. DRIVER SEAT BELT UNLATCHES ON IT'S OWN, RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING.

My husband and I were waking up to his alarm that went off at 5 am and he hit the snooze, during the snooze time we heard what sounded like a handgun go off so we both jumped up and opened the door leading to the outside of the house and immediately seen my truck engulfed in flames, the headlights were on and my grandson and husband both got Water hose's and proceeded to put the fire out but it was so hot and we were afraid that the truck would explode if we got any closer. My next door neighbor called 911 and firetruck arrived to finish putting out the fire but the entire truck was completely melted, at least the cab. The firefighter helped get the hood open so that my husband could disconnect the battery because the headlights were still on and the battery was throwing sparks.

"EXTERIOR LIGHTS TAIL LIGHTS RECALL" SINCE I'VE OWNED THIS TRUCK SINCE 2000, I'VE HAD ISSUES WITH THE REAR TAIL LIGHTS SOCKET BULB COMING LOOSE AFTER AWHILE DRIVING. AND MY TRUCK IS NOT COVERD IN THE RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. DONT KNOW THE REASON WHY.

THE REAR QUARTER PANEL LATCHES CRACK VERY EASILY. I HAVE PERSONALLY TALKED TO OVER 6 PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIFFERENT YEAR TUNDRAS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THIS. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT. WITH SO MANY YEARS INVOLVED, IT SHOULD BE RECALLED!!! AT LEAST OFFER FREE NEW LATCHES!*AK

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE DRIVERS SIDE VISOR DROPPED DOWN UPON DRIVING OVER SLIGHT BUMPS ON THE HIGHWAY AFFECTING MY VISION OF THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. DIMINISHED AND UNEXPECTED VISION WHILE DRIVING IS VERY HAZARDOUS. I'VE LOOKED FOR AN ADJUSTMENT ON THE VISOR BUT I FOUND NONE. THE VEHICLES BRAKE ROTORS AND DRUMS WERE WARPED AND CAUSED EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE WHEN BRAKING. *NLM THERE WAS A VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING, THE TIRE SEEMED TO BE WORN ON THE INSIDE, THE A/C MADE A NOISE WHEN TURNED ON HIGH, AND THE FRONT SEAT BELT DID NOT RETRACT AT TIMES. *SCC *JB

BRAKE VIBRATION AND EXCESSIVE BRAKE WEAR. BRAKES WERE SERVICED AT ABOUT 38,000 MILES DUE TO SEVERE VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING. PROBLEM RETURNED AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS. BRAKES REPLACED AGAIN AT 68,000 MILES AND VIBRATION HAS AGAIN RETURNED. THERE IS A VIBRATION AND ROUGH BRAKING WHEN SLOWING DOWN FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS.*AK
