2022 Toyota Tundra Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Water is leaking into the cab of my 2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum 4x4 through the high-mounted third brake light. The leak allows water to enter the headliner and interior, creating the potential for mold, damage to the interior, and electrical issues. After troubleshooting, the third brake light gasket appears to be the source of the leak. Toyota does not appear to offer the gasket as a replacement part, requiring owners to replace the entire third brake light assembly despite the failure being limited to the seal. Numerous owners have reported similar water intrusion issues on 2022+ Tundras, suggesting this may be a common defect rather than an isolated incident. I believe Toyota should investigate the failed gasket design and consider a recall or service campaign to replace the defective seal or assembly.

Driving on the interstate and the truck surged very hard. The truck began to surge very hard and went into decreased speed mode. We were told by the dealer there is a TSB for the PCM. This decreased power caused the truck to not be able to travel over 25 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. This caused an unsafe situation.

Multiple times in my almost 3 year ownership I have experienced a “dead pedal” while pulling out into traffic from a stop. It has almost caused a t bone accident on a few occasions. It’s been to the dealer and had a software update TSB 0111-22. After the update I didn’t have the issue for a little while, but it has come back and it now happens almost every time I drive it. Online search shows that there are multiple people having this problem. Toyota needs to come up with a fix for this before it causes a bad accident.

On 2022 - 2024 Toyota Tundra models, the vehicles are experiencing an issue where the fuel sensor will reset the digital and analog fuel displays back to showing a full tank without adding fuel to the tank. On my vehicle, the reset has been occurring around the 380 mile distance to empty level. I see numerous other reports about individuals experiencing the same issue. I believe this is a defect and could cause a vehicle to run out of gas without the driver expecting it.

What component failed and is it available for inspection? The front driver-side roof seam on my 2022 Toyota Tundra developed corrosion under the paint and eventually opened enough for rainwater to enter the cabin. Water drips directly into the A-pillar area onto the side curtain airbag wiring, squib connector, and padded harness. It also reaches the dashboard and electrical buttons near the steering wheel during rain. The roof seam, A-pillar wiring, interior rust staining, and all affected components remain available for inspection. How was safety put at risk? The A-pillar contains the SRS curtain airbag system, its wiring, and connectors that should never be exposed to moisture. Continuous water intrusion over many months can cause corrosion, increased resistance, short circuits, or damage to the airbag inflator/squib circuit, which may lead to unintended deployment or failure to deploy in a crash. Water reaching the dashboard controls and electrical switches could cause intermittent electrical faults or malfunction of driver controls. These issues present a significant safety risk because the vehicle’s airbag and electrical systems may not function as designed. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed? Yes. The Toyota dealer has repeatedly observed the active leak, interior rust streaks, and bubbling/corrosion along the roof seam. The water intrusion occurs every time it rains. Has the vehicle been inspected? Yes. Toyota has inspected the truck multiple times, including by a Field Technical Specialist. However, Toyota has been unable to provide complete documentation or photos from the FTS inspection, and the underlying safety issue remains unresolved. No inspections have been done by police or insurance. Warning lamps or messages? No warning lamps appeared. The first symptom was water leaking into the cabin around March 2024, followed by rust streaking inside the A-pillar and exterior bubbling. The issue continues during rainfall.

I’m writing to report a driver’s-door lock malfunction on my 2022 Toyota Tundra and to request goodwill assistance (reimbursement or no-charge repair). VIN: [XXX] Mileage: 38,575 miles Concern: The driver’s door does not lock/unlock using the key fob or interior switch. Manual locking still works. Other doors operate normally. Safety/security impact: The vehicle cannot be reliably secured and the condition may leave the vehicle vulnerable when parked. Troubleshooting performed: Verified other doors work; checked fuses; inspected door-to-body wiring boot; issue appears isolated to the driver-side door lock actuator/latch. Requested resolution: Goodwill coverage for diagnosis and repair (or reimbursement if I proceed with repair now), including parts and labor for the driver-door lock actuator/latch assembly. I’ve been satisfied with the vehicle and would appreciate Toyota’s help resolving this known-type issue just beyond the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty. Please open a case and advise next steps. I can provide service records, videos, and a dealer estimate upon request. Thank you for your assistance. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The hood “open” sensor failed and indicated that my hood was not properly latched. The hood was latched properly. This resulted in a loud, distracting, and constant beeping that occurs anytime the vehicle is driven over 2 mph. This beeping has the potential to interfere with the driver and may result in an accident.

Front Active Spoiler Malfunction Last week I took the vehicle into Toyota due to this malfunction message on the vehicle. The spoiler failed and remained in the down position, unknowingly causing additional damage to the spoiler flap. It was determined that the motor assembly was not working and needed to be replaced. The motor, flap and related assemblies were replaced under warranty by the dealership on 07/17/2025. Within 2 days, the spoiler was stuck in the down position again, this time without the malfunction message on the vehicle. With this being stuck in the down position, it can potentially cause more damage to the vehicle being in the down position and lead to debris in the roadway depending on the damage. Toyota manual states to avoid driving the vehicle at high speeds when this issue is present. However, owners with this issue would not know there is an issue if the vehicle is not presenting an error while functioning improperly. The vehicle is scheduled to be looked at again tomorrow 07/22/2025, at Corwin Toyota of Colorado Springs.

On [XXX] I was traveling in my 2022 Trd Pro Tundra 5.5 hv. I was taking a left turn at a green light, when all of the sudden lights appeared on my dash saying “HYBRID SYSTEM MALFUNCTION, visit your dealer”. The car continued to function for approximately 1 minute, until the next light where it turned off. I tried to turn the vehicle back on, but it started to shake when it tried to start. At this point I was stuck at the light with traffic behind me, the engine had failed and the hybrid system had failed as well. I had to call 911 and request an officer to come assist, because I was blocking traffic. The vehicle had to pulled to a lot where I could unhook my boat that was in tow, and tow the truck to the Beaver Toyota dealership. After arriving at the dealer and being there for over a week, I have been informed that they will be preforming a short block rebuild, because my truck is not listed in the 2022-2023 Toyota tundra recall. Even though my truck experienced the same engine failure due to debris in the engine as all the 2022-2023 tundras. My specific truck was not included in this recall because Toyota says the hybrid system would be able to move my car to a safe position if there was an engine failure. This was in fact not true because my hybrid system malfunction at the moment of the engine failure resulting in me stuck in the middle of the road blocking traffic having to call the police. Toyota needs to include trd pro hybrid owners in the 2022-2024 full block recall or face extensive legal action. I have a 2022 Tundra that I purchased new. My current mileage is 18,500 and although my truck is part of the engine replacement recall that is not what I am complaining about, what I am complaining about is my front passenger window got stuck halfway open/closed and it's been sitting at the dealership for 2 weeks with no parts available to fix it (the cable snapped and motor burned out). They did put me in a rental (tacoma) but they have no idea when the parts will be available to fix my window! This is my 4th Tundra and never had an issue like this with any of my others. I've already called Toyota and they have no idea when parts will be available either. They also said they have no parts to fix the temporary fuel line recall which has been out for almost 1 year.

The Digital Instrument Cluster continues to have freezing and lagging while in motion. The DTE (Distance To Empty) has reset itself in the midst of driving with no input from the driver. This has continued to happen for multiple months. Also, the Fuel Gauge has become stuck. Toyota did release a TSB (T-SB-0022-23) to "resolve" this issue but it continues to be an issue well into the 2024 model year.

The Digital Instrument Cluster continues to have freezing issues as well as blacking out while driving. From our previous experiences, this is more than likely due to software. There was a Safety Recall (23TA02) that was suppose to address some of these issues, but they continue to exist and happen. Not to mention that the fuel level will reset to FULL even though the vehicle has been driven for most, if not all, of the usable fuel. This continues to happen on 2024 model year vehicles.

The Digital Rearview Mirror in our Platinum model has cut out since new. While the mirror can turn into a traditional mirror, it is random in nature and it can cause a hazard when it happens while driving at 70MPH and you have to switch it over. Toyota did try to resolve the issue by replacing the camera that is fed to the Digital Rearview Mirror, but the issue is not resolved. We are not awaiting a replacement mirror to come in. Without our Extended Warranty, the part along has a cost of $2,351.08 WITHOUT labor included. This is a known issue across multiple vehicles and Toyota has not yet issued anything to address the issue.

I did a software update when it pops up on my LCD screen. Then the screen turns black and multiple sensors came on. LTA sensor Brake fail sensor crash senor and more. I look online and found out it has a apple car play issue that cause sensor to malfunction. I don't know if my truck is safe to drive. Afraid the airbag will blow up because of the crash sensor popping up and the failure brake senor also popping up. I took it took my local Toyota Dealer Sandia Toyota they didn't even look at it and made false accusations and try to charge me when my truck at 20000 miles. I took it to another dealer to get it fix. The incident started 4/6/2024 and today is 4/23/24 and I still have no truck to drive. I paid 70k for it but more concern for other. Please look into this issue making sure it safe for me and other.

I was driving on Highway 98 at 76 miles an hour. A light came on the dash said engine is low on power. Then immediately the car said to get to the side of the road the engine had shut off. This was in the middle of a drive on the interstate. I almost got hit by a truck. With family in the car. I made an appointment at our local dealer for all the recalls and they canceled it last Friday due to their service force being sick. This almost got me and my son killed.

New 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid, 2000 miles, experienced a total system failure while driving, engine, Hybrid system, brake, parking brake etc. all systems failure causing a serious safety issue. Dealership called Toyota as diagnostics instructed them to. They want to replace computer but frankly they have no idea and are guessing making this vehicle completely unsafe as it can never be driven on a highway where another failure would likely cause injury or death. Dealers position is it's not their problem, it's Toyotas!!!
