2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Problems

I have only ever serviced this vehicle at VW dealerships, and took the car in for service every 10k miles. The check engine light came on just under 50k miles and it was due to a cracked Leak Detection Pump. I paid for the repair out of pocket. After it was fixed, just a few weeks later the check engine light came back on. When I took the car back to the same dealership, they diagnosed the problem as a cylinder head issue requiring cylinder head replacement and quoted a significant cost to fix. It is not covered under warranty even though I am just barely over the 50k mile mark. There is a common and known, recurring issue with the engine on the 2022 VW Tiguans and it is a shame that there is no recall already issued for this.

I own a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan that has experienced ongoing excessive oil consumption. At approximately 60,000 miles, the vehicle experienced a much more serious incident. While traveling approximately 75 mph on the interstate, the vehicle began actively spraying engine oil, covering the exterior of the vehicle. A warning light then appeared instructing me to check the engine oil level. I was able to exit the interstate and pull into a gas station. Once parked, the vehicle was leaking an excessive amount of oil onto the concrete underneath it. I contacted the dealership, and they immediately understood the issue because they had seen the same problem occur in other Volkswagen Tiguans. I am concerned that the sudden and substantial loss of engine oil while traveling approximately 75 mph presents a serious safety risk. This type of failure could potentially cause catastrophic engine damage or engine failure at highway speeds, leaving the vehicle disabled in active traffic. I am also concerned about the possibility of oil contacting hot engine components and creating a fire hazard. This incident is especially concerning given the vehicle's prior history of excessive oil consumption and the dealership's statement that they had encountered the same issue in other Volkswagen Tiguans. I am concerned there may be an underlying defect involving the engine or oil system. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can document the incident and evaluate whether similar complaints involving 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles indicate a broader safety-related defect.

My 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan intermittently displays the warning “Travel Assist Currently Not Available” while driving. The warning is accompanied by an audible chime and has occurred repeatedly. The warning indicates that the vehicle’s Travel Assist system is unavailable. I am concerned because Travel Assist is associated with steering and lane-keeping assistance, and the warning occurs while the vehicle is being driven. Volkswagen has issued Technical Service Bulletin 48-23-01 (Transaction No. 2070207) addressing a “Travel Assist currently not available” condition involving the steering wheel hands-on detection system on certain Tiguan vehicles. The problem is intermittent and the vehicle is available for inspection. I am reporting this because the condition continues to occur and I believe it should be documented and evaluated as a potential safety-related defect.

ACC warning lights flash on and off, loud obnoxious beeping triggered at engine start and persists through all speeds.

2022 VW Tiguan, VIN [XXX], 54,953 mi. Infotainment screen went black; because the rearview camera image displays only on that screen, the backup camera is completely inoperative in reverse. Failure is constant. I replaced a blown #20 fuse and attempted a hard restart with no result. XXX, Volkswagen of [XXX] [XXX]: tech found DTC in ECM stating no communication with 5F module (infotainment control unit); VW guided test plan directs replacement of the 5F module. Quoted $501.54. Dealer stated this is a known issue and multiple customers there are waiting on the same backordered part. VW has already recalled 2022 Tiguans for this component and this consequence. Campaign 22V-514 ([XXX]): infotainment memory module defect causing rearview camera image not to display, certified by VW as an FMVSS 111 noncompliance. Campaign 25V-082: 2022-24 Tiguan camera control unit error, same loss of camera display. NHTSA VIN lookup on XXX shows no open recalls; my vehicle was included in neither campaign and no remedy has ever been applied. My vehicle has the identical failure (same model year, platform, component, and loss of rear visibility) as the recalled population. The dealer's statement that multiple customers await the same part indicates the defect population extends beyond the recalled VINs. I request NHTSA evaluate whether the scope of 22V-514 and 25V-082 was underinclusive and whether a recall query or scope expansion is warranted for uncovered 2022 Tiguans. Travel assist currently unavailable warning goes off frequently in 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan SE-R Line creating a loud repetitive dinging noise which is very distracting and alarming while driving, thus causing a safety issue. This occurs even when not using travel assist features and there is no way for the consumer to disable the travel assist to prevent the warning from occurring. This has been an ongoing issue since purchasing the vehicle in May 2022 and has been reported to the local Volkswagen dealership multiple times with no acknowledgement of the issue or offer to repair while the vehicle was under warranty. I have recently discovered that Volkswagen issued a Technical Service Bulletin for dealerships in May 2023 under (TSB) 2070207/1 (also known as TSB 48-23-01). It is a known issue to Volkswagen and they have failed to issue a recall or properly train their dealerships about the issuance of the Technical Service Bulletin to appropriately repair while covered under warranty.

2022 VW Tiguan SE had PCV (positive crankshaft ventilation) also known as air-oil separator failed just outside of warranty creating a pressure cooker like effect in the engine which caused several seals and hoses, (such as the upper/front timing cover gaskets, rear main seal, and valve stem seals) to fail. The oil pan gasket was also destroyed. Although I was fortunate enough to be able to drive from my house around the corner to my local mechanic, this could have become a dangerous scenario considering most of my driving is done on busy freeways -- this could have caused severe oil slicking, sudden loss of power, and/or total engine failure. All of which could have resulted in a fatal, multi-vehicle accident. This appears to be a relatively common incident involving this particular year and model according to a New Jersey federal case ([XXX] et al v. The vehicle intermittently fails to accelerate normally from a stop, especially in hot weather and when the A/C is running. When pressing the accelerator, the vehicle can hesitate for an extended period before moving. In a recent incident recorded on video (reference attachment), I pressed the accelerator and the vehicle failed to respond normally for more than 10 seconds, requiring me to pull over. This creates a serious safety risk when entering intersections, making U-turns, crossing traffic, or pulling into traffic, because the vehicle does not respond when acceleration is needed. The issue is intermittent and more frequent and severe during summer temperatures, when the AC is running continuously. The concern has been reported to the Volkswagen dealer multiple times. Dealer repair attempts were made in 2025, but the issue still exists. An independent mechanic also inspected/tested the vehicle and confirmed there is an issue, but advised that it likely requires Volkswagen-specific diagnosis, software, adaptation, or calibration. No consistent warning light appears before the hesitation occurs. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I have video evidence showing the delayed acceleration condition.

I got this car in 2024 and it burns through oil. I am constantly replacing the oil and have had to have the seals replaced a couple of times. Every 200 to 300 miles I have to put oil in it. It’s too new of a car for that. I know a lot of other owners have had issues.

My 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has an ongoing excessive oil consumption problem that began in April 2025 when the low oil warning illuminated. I added approximately one quart of oil and contacted the Volkswagen dealership. The dealership instructed me not to add oil myself if the warning returned and to bring the vehicle in for evaluation. On May 12, 2025, I brought the vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership and an oil consumption test was performed. The problem continued. I returned the vehicle on July 25, 2025, and a second oil consumption test was performed. The dealership subsequently replaced the PCV valve in the engine in an attempt to correct the oil consumption problem. On August 25, 2026, the check oil warning illuminated again, indicating that the problem has continued despite two oil consumption tests and replacement of the PCV valve. The dealership is now requesting that I bring the vehicle back for a third oil consumption test. The vehicle has repeatedly been made available to the Volkswagen dealership for inspection and repair. Each time it is taken in for this problem, the dealership keeps the vehicle for approximately one week, and there has been little communication regarding the status of the vehicle unless I contact the dealership myself. I am concerned that the underlying cause of the excessive oil consumption remains unresolved despite repeated testing and an attempted repair. I am concerned about continued oil loss, potential engine damage or engine failure, and the safety of operating the vehicle while the cause of the oil consumption remains unresolved. The vehicle is available for further inspection.

I'm experiencing a persistent Travel Assistant is not available dash light and warning beep on a repeated basis. I have taken this into the VW dealer and the did a factory reset to address the problem and that did not resolve the issue. There is a know widespread problem with several 2022 models that can be found when searching the problem. VW has issued a Technical Service Bulletin to dealers (TSB 48-23-01) so they are aware of the problem. The warning is very distracting and often chimes multiple times in a row, last experience it went off approximately 20 times in one mile.

The wipers of this car go on and off automatically and you are not able to turn off the feature. They go on without rain or any debris on the windshield. I already took it to a Volkswagen dealer and they accepted the error and replaced the steering wheel, saying this was the cause. With the new steering wheel, the problem is still going on and they don’t offer any solutions because they don’t understand what is happening to the car. This is very distracting and I’ve been close to crashing due to the wipers going on and off consistently. I researched on the internet and there are several VW cars with this issue and no solutions found.

The vehicle's sunroof glass failed catastrophically and shattered spontaneously without any external impact or contributing factor. The glass was not safety glass and shattered into sharp shards, dispersing throughout the vehicle interior, including the rear seating area. This failure posed a serious safety risk, as glass shards caused minor injuries to my skin, and could have resulted in significant injury had a child or pet been seated in the back. The incident has not been reproduced; however, the damage was confirmed and repaired by the authorized dealership, which replaced the sunroof glass, frame, and sunshade due to extensive damage. The vehicle was inspected by the dealership, and a comprehensive insurance claim was filed. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms were present prior to the failure, and the event occurred without warning.

Phantom braking, 2nd time in last 3 months

On 7/22/25, I started an oil consumption test. It was eventually diagnosed that it was an issue because the cylinder head was replaced 9/25/25. Then a total engine replacement 1/26/2026 and on 2/10/2026 the dipstick tube was replaced. The car has consistently had engine oil consumption and still under the manufacturer warranty. It’s a lemon

The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that the vehicle had been at the dealer since November 2025 unrepaired regarding the side curtain air bag. The dealer informed the contact that Part Number: 5NN880742G; was on backorder. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time to provide the part for the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue but offered no assistance. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Crack spontaneously appeared near VW logo on steering wheel. The crack is growing. Volkswagen dealership said the airbag and steering wheel plate cover need to be replaced but unwilling to cover under warranty. Steering wheel plate cover looks to be swollen and other visible areas show stress marks. Dealership is ordering replacement part to replace next week. Dealership did not say this is a safety concern, but I feel it is needs to be reported to the correct persons. No warning lights have occurred.

I bought this brand new Tiguan in July 2022. The engine is either leaking or burning engine oil. I have the check engine oil level light on around every 2000-3000 miles. I had been to the dealer several times. They just inspect for leak and added engine oil. The problem still exist. The dealer stated that my car needs oil change every 10k miles. I am going back every 2-3 k miles for engine oil. There is something wrong with the engine. It is burning or consuming the engine oil. Another problem i have is the wheel or the brakes. When I was braking at above 60 miles per hours, there is a strong vibration on the wheel or brakes.

I purchased this vehicle in June 2022 VW of Orlando North Florida. I had issues with salesperson [XXX] as he caught himself in lies. Anyway, my vehicle has 5,000 miles I keep in excellent condition I was going to detail and add some wheel options when I observed all 4 tires on this vehicle do not match. 3 are scorpions and 1 is Pirelli. Which means unbeknownst to me I’ve been driving this new Tiguan and suv with different tires. I was always aware especially vehicles awd should be fitted with the same tires. This is a violation, a safety hazard. I contacted VW of America, Vw Orlando and others I will take this incident complaint all the way to the President if I have to When I purchased this vehicle I was charged for ventilated front seats which was included in the car cost. A disclaimer read they are not installed even though there are buttons. The took off $200 I’m not a mathematician but a 2,000 option not connected with a $200 credit appears they made 1800 extra off me. I want this investigated, as a former law officer I know this is illegal and a very bad safety issue especially regarding the mismatched tires [XXX]. My vehicle was parked on my worksite and when I can out to check a truck in. I noticed my windows looked tinted and when I went to investigate my vehicle was on fire or smoking badly and I closed the door and call [XXX]. This was a very traumatic experience for me considering I had only purchased the vehicle from the dealership on the 18th and had recently been training one of my kids for driving lessons. While I am grateful that me or my family where not physically injured it is unacceptable that both the manufacturer and dealership knowingly put both me and my family in harms way and I expect to be compensated for this preventable traumatic experience we've endured due to no fault of ours. 2022 Tiguan overhead consule just fell down hanging by wires. No glasses compartment so not sure what would cause the stress on it due to usage. Dealer said 2020 models had issue and have an extended warranty. The 2022 does not have any recall. Seems like design flaw VW should correct as issue comes up. If I was driving at the time. it would have hit me or passenger in the head. This is a safety concern. I have seen multiple posts where this has happened. VW said I am out of warranty and will not do anything. It is 2022 and I have seen 2020 and 2021 models with owners posting same issue.

The driver-side seat belt buckle is getting stuck and does not release the seat belt when the release button is pressed.

Seven months after I purchased this vehicle as new the driver side rear seatbelt buckle is not working which is preventing that passenger to put the seatbelt on, it keeps coming out. I called the local Dealership, FIndley Henderson Volkwagen, and the earliest appointment is a week from today, which means I can't have anyone sitting there. Any car after seven months shouldn't have this kind of safety problem. maybe it's a design issue.

Rear sunroof glass spontaneously shattered while driving, no rock struck the glass.

Windshield provided cracks super easily

2022 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO SAFETY CONCERNS WITH THE AUTO UNLOCK FEATURE ON VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED ALL 4 DOORS ON THE VEHICLE UNLOCK WHEN THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED TO PARK. THE CONSUMER STATED THE FEATURE COULD BE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL IN SOME SITUATIONS.

My backup camera stopped functioning not too long after the warranty was expired. It began by not coming on sometimes and then it went completely out. The entire unit is no longer functioning which prevents me from being able to use my backup camera and that is a safety issue.
