2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Driver assistance Problems

My 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan intermittently displays the warning “Travel Assist Currently Not Available” while driving. The warning is accompanied by an audible chime and has occurred repeatedly. The warning indicates that the vehicle’s Travel Assist system is unavailable. I am concerned because Travel Assist is associated with steering and lane-keeping assistance, and the warning occurs while the vehicle is being driven. Volkswagen has issued Technical Service Bulletin 48-23-01 (Transaction No. 2070207) addressing a “Travel Assist currently not available” condition involving the steering wheel hands-on detection system on certain Tiguan vehicles. The problem is intermittent and the vehicle is available for inspection. I am reporting this because the condition continues to occur and I believe it should be documented and evaluated as a potential safety-related defect.

Travel assist currently unavailable warning goes off frequently in 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan SE-R Line creating a loud repetitive dinging noise which is very distracting and alarming while driving, thus causing a safety issue. This occurs even when not using travel assist features and there is no way for the consumer to disable the travel assist to prevent the warning from occurring. This has been an ongoing issue since purchasing the vehicle in May 2022 and has been reported to the local Volkswagen dealership multiple times with no acknowledgement of the issue or offer to repair while the vehicle was under warranty. I have recently discovered that Volkswagen issued a Technical Service Bulletin for dealerships in May 2023 under (TSB) 2070207/1 (also known as TSB 48-23-01). It is a known issue to Volkswagen and they have failed to issue a recall or properly train their dealerships about the issuance of the Technical Service Bulletin to appropriately repair while covered under warranty.

EPC light kicks on which is puts your car in limp mode, which is caused by a cylinder head issue. The EPC limits your car acceleration and speed ability, this is extremely dangerous especially on the highway. It’s been a year & Volkswagen is refusing to take responsibility and offer a recall when it’s an ongoing issue with 2021-2022 Volkswagen Tiguans. The cylinder heads have been on back order for a year. This is an issue I believe that needs a nation wide investigation & recall for customers.

I'm experiencing a persistent Travel Assistant is not available dash light and warning beep on a repeated basis. I have taken this into the VW dealer and the did a factory reset to address the problem and that did not resolve the issue. There is a know widespread problem with several 2022 models that can be found when searching the problem. VW has issued a Technical Service Bulletin to dealers (TSB 48-23-01) so they are aware of the problem. The warning is very distracting and often chimes multiple times in a row, last experience it went off approximately 20 times in one mile.

For multiple weeks, my vehicle's Travel Assist/driver-assistance system has repeatedly malfunctioned. The problem began after the vehicle was returned to me by the dealership following service related to an ongoing oil-consumption issue. Since receiving the vehicle back, the "Travel Assist currently not available" warning and associated warning indicators activate repeatedly during virtually every drive. The warning is accompanied by an audible alert/beeping and may occur multiple times during a single trip. The repeated alerts are distracting while driving and create a safety concern. The warnings occur even when I am not actively using Travel Assist or the driver-assistance system. They have occurred while the vehicle is completely stopped as well as while I am driving normally within my lane without crossing the lane markings. The system appears to activate warnings unpredictably and without any corresponding action by the driver. Because this involves a driver-assistance/safety system, I am concerned that the system may not function properly or be available when it is actually needed. The unpredictable and repeated audible warnings also divert the driver's attention from the roadway. This malfunction has continued consistently for several weeks across multiple trips. I have photographs documenting the Travel Assist warning and warning indicators displayed on the instrument cluster under different driving conditions and at different vehicle mileages. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

The infotainment MIB3 system failed. Infotainment screen is completely black and non functional. This has put my family at risk because I can’t see my backup camera and have very limited visibility through rear view mirror when backing up. I also lost safety features such as rear cross traffic warning, rear auto braking, ability to see pedestrians or vehicles when backing up, and the emergency cell call system. My car also no longer can access navigation or CarPlay which makes navigation dangerous on my small phone. Failure of MIB3 infotainment brain was confirmed by VW dealer. Car is under factory warranty but part is backordered with no ETA so I’m forced to drive an unsafe car. Was denied a loaner vehicle. This failure happened 1 day after overhead console spontaneously broke and fell down from headliner. Error lights now persist on the dashboard.

Travel Assist Not Available warning chime several times while driving. This has been back to the dealer 3 or more times, steering wheel replaced, software updates and still this along with screen blackouts, steering wheel heater coming on without prompting, audio failure, backup camera not always functioning. We have had the steering wheel replaced twice in this vehicle since purchasing it brand new. This is not the 3rd steering wheel in the truck. From what we can tell this is extremely common with this VW. There is an issue with the wheel ring that causes the circuitry to "freak" out and cause the lane assist system/warning to come on/off repeatedly on the dash. It happens when you turn the wheel and flashes on the screen/auditable alerts multiple times. It is unsafe to drive as the warning happens for no rhyme or reason. Causing malfunction to the lane assist feature and is extremely distracting for the driver. Yes, the dealer has been able to replicate the issue. They have successfully replaced the steering wheel twice no (under warranty) There were no warnings prior to the issue happening. At which point the waring lights and audible alerts starting happening. This is clearly a recall issue for VW. Our concern is we are now on the 3rd steering wheel in a vehicle we bought brand new and it is now out of warranty. After the first wheel replacement there were no issues for approx. 1 year, then it happened again. There is a part that is degrading within the wheel and causing this to happen.

The vehicle intermittently fails to accelerate normally from a stop, especially in hot weather and when the A/C is running. When pressing the accelerator, the vehicle can hesitate for an extended period before moving. In a recent incident recorded on video (reference attachment), I pressed the accelerator and the vehicle failed to respond normally for more than 10 seconds, requiring me to pull over. This creates a serious safety risk when entering intersections, making U-turns, crossing traffic, or pulling into traffic, because the vehicle does not respond when acceleration is needed. The issue is intermittent and more frequent and severe during summer temperatures, when the AC is running continuously. The concern has been reported to the Volkswagen dealer multiple times. Dealer repair attempts were made in 2025, but the issue still exists. An independent mechanic also inspected/tested the vehicle and confirmed there is an issue, but advised that it likely requires Volkswagen-specific diagnosis, software, adaptation, or calibration. No consistent warning light appears before the hesitation occurs. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I have video evidence showing the delayed acceleration condition.

My travel assist warning light and warning bell randomly goes on. Sometimes it does it a couple times, most times it continues nonstop. I have warranty left and the dealer has charged me twice to diagnose it only to say there's nothing wrong. They claim unless it is doing it when i come in, there is nothing they can do. I find it hard to belive that this doesn't log in the computer. This becomes terribly distracting while driving as I look down every single time to read the warning in case it is something different. I showed the dealer a 3 minute video of it happening. I tried to traded the car for a different brand and it did it to the people inspecting the car.

This is a very common issue with the car and everytime I touch the steering wheel it says “travel assist not available”. But when it notify that message it makes a very loud noise. It is very distracting because everytime I move my hands or grab the wheel it will keep making the loud noise making it very hard to focus. This is a problem that Volkswagen knows about and wants the customer to pay over $1000 out of pocket to replace the whole steering wheel. There is no user error or way for the drive to cause this it is a faulty sensor in the wheel. In the end its makes it very hard to drive and focus when everytime I move my hand on my wheel the car makes a loud ringing noise

In February 2026, my windshield was replaced by a third-party glass company after a crack. Shortly after, my vehicle’s driver assistance system began activating falsely — beeping, displaying warnings, and on a few occasions attempting to auto-correct the steering wheel while my hands were already on it. The ‘hands on wheel’ warning has displayed while I was actively holding the wheel. The glass company has serviced the vehicle four times since, including replacing the camera bracket, resetting the windshield seal, and installing a full OEM windshield and bracket as recently as June 15, 2026. Camera recalibration has passed successfully each time. Despite this, the false activations have continued and worsened. On June 17, 2026, the system activated approximately 25 times during a single commute of about 30 minutes, including while braking and during slow-speed maneuvers such as parking. The vehicle’s steering wheel was replaced in January 2025 under a manufacturer Technical Service Bulletin for an unrelated known defect and functioned without issue for over a year before this began. I am scheduling a dealership appointment to diagnose the cause. This is a safety concern because the system unpredictably intervenes with steering input and produces frequent distracting false alerts while driving

Lane Assistance Warning comes on repeatedly for no apparent reason. It is very distracting and dangerous as it makes a loud noise and flashes on the dashboard. The dealership has replaced the steering wheel to rectify the issue, but it has begun happening again and is no longer covered under the warranty. There seems to be no fix or answer from VW other than replacing the wheel again. Which has only been a temporary fix.

Out of the blue, the Travel Assist warning will start ringing. Sometimes it does it once, other times it can go nonstop for 10 minutes. It happens randomly and I can't make it come on. It has become a terrible distraction while I am driving. The dealer claims unless they observe it, they won't repair it under warranty. There is a TSB describing exactly what my car is doing. While I was on the phone with customer care it started doing it and the other person could hear it. His reply was to keep letting the dealer drive it until it happens to them. They have done this twice already and charged me both times. I'm afraid of the distraction while I'm driving. I even have video of it happening but they say it isn't enough.

This is related to reference TSB 48-23-01. There is a rapid, unpredictable chime causes intense cognitive distraction while trying to navigate highway traffic. It is accompanied by warning messages covering navigation information and other displays on the dash. It is impossible to focus on driving the car and is incessant with no way to turn off. This is a safety hazard. I've almost been involved in several crashes due to the distraction and trying to manage the problem as it's occurring.

"Travel Assist Not Available" chime and yellow notification came on intermittently from around July 2024 to July 2025 in my VW Tiguan. I complained about it to the Heritage VW in [XXX] and nothing was done in 2024. The noise and notifications became more frequent around July 2025 and came on every time I drove the vehicle incessantly. I took the car back to Heritage VW and they said it was by battery and replaced this for a fee. This did not eliminate the problem and the dealer kept it for 2 days and found that it was the steering wheel. They charged me to replace this because the vehicle was out of warranty. However, in July 2024 it was still under warranty but Heritage VW neglected to make the repair. This noise was a huge distraction to my driving as it was loud and incessant. The travel assist warning displays frequently depending on where hands are positioned on steering wheel. Sound is a distraction while driving and hand placement can to unsafe to avoid the warning being triggered. I have had the steering wheel replaced due to the issue but now with the new steering wheel the problem is back.

This first happened while I was driving. First, it started with a loud warning tone along with the notice on the console telling the travel assist is currently not available. It’ll be there for a few minutes and then it will go away. A couple of months later during the winter of December 2025- January 2026. It was constantly a problem. Every time I drove every 2 to 5 minutes it will give me the same loud beep along with the notice. It didn’t matter whether I was using the feature or not it kept constantly beeping. In the best of times it was very annoying and in the worst of times it just is so loud that it scares me. I tried so many things to fix it. I would often try to clean the cameras. And I couldn’t use the lane keeping assistance at all through all this. There is a feature I’ve been using extensively and I think it’s important for having helped me driving safely in the highway. In the end, it was so distracting I’m not having the lane keeping Assistance that I was forced to go get it repaired. That’s when I understood that it was a widely reported issue.

My 2022 Tiguan burns excessive oil between oil changes and the check oil light comes on. I have to top it off between oil changes. I purchased in Nov 2023 and the light came on in less than 6 months. It has been brought to dealerships attention on mulitple ocassions however they are unable to find a problem or a solution. They have replaced my leak detection pump and a cover without results. I have also had on going issues with the travel assist light coming on almost daily. They replaced my steering wheel already without resolution as well. Currently there is a class action lawsuit for 2022 Tiguans for the excessive oil consumption issue so hopefully they will fnd a resolution soon.
