Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
1
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

Apr 23, 2008
9,600 units potentially affected
The defect: YAMAHA IS RECALLING 9,600 MY 2006-2007 CP250 AND MY 2005-2007 YP400 MOTORCYCLES. THE ENGINE COULD STALL AND BE DIFFICULT TO RESTART BECAUSE THE WIRE TERMINALS IN THE FUEL PUMP WIRE COUPLER HAVE CORRODED. WATER CAN ENTER FROM THE MAIN WIRE HARNESS END AND RUN THROUGH THE HARNESS TO THE FUEL PUMP COUPLER.
The risk: IF THE WATER REMAINS IN THE COUPLER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE TERMINALS CAN BECOME CORRODED, WHICH CAN PREVENT THE FUEL PUMP FROM OPERATING PROPERLY. IF THIS CORROSION AFFECTS FUEL PUMP OPERATION WHILE THE SCOOTER IS BEING RIDDEN, THERE COULD BE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SUB-HARNESS WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW ANY WATER BETWEEN THE WIRE HARNESS AND THE FUEL PUMP TO DRAIN OUT BEFORE IT REACHES THE FUEL PUMP. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTORS. IF EITHER THE MAIN WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR OR THE FUEL PUMP CONNECTORS IS ALREADY CORRODED, THE CORRESPONDING ASSEMBLY(IES) WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 9, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP SEAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 18, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

IN HOT WEATHER, THE YAMAHA YP400 FAILS TO START, STALLS AT IDLE, AND INTERMITTENTLY CUTS FUEL AT HIGH SPEED. SYMPTOMS ARE NONEXISTENT UNTIL THE AIR TEMPERATURE EXCEEDS ABOUT 95 DEGREES F. SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL PUMPS ARE FREQUENTLY DOCUMENTED WITH OWNERS OF MAJESTY YP400 MODELS AS WELL AS T-MAX XP500 AND ZUMA YW125, THE LAST OF WHICH WAS SUBJECT TO A RECALL OF ITS OWN. *TR

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
