Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
1
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

9,600 units potentially affected
The defect: YAMAHA IS RECALLING 9,600 MY 2006-2007 CP250 AND MY 2005-2007 YP400 MOTORCYCLES. THE ENGINE COULD STALL AND BE DIFFICULT TO RESTART BECAUSE THE WIRE TERMINALS IN THE FUEL PUMP WIRE COUPLER HAVE CORRODED. WATER CAN ENTER FROM THE MAIN WIRE HARNESS END AND RUN THROUGH THE HARNESS TO THE FUEL PUMP COUPLER.
The risk: IF THE WATER REMAINS IN THE COUPLER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE TERMINALS CAN BECOME CORRODED, WHICH CAN PREVENT THE FUEL PUMP FROM OPERATING PROPERLY. IF THIS CORROSION AFFECTS FUEL PUMP OPERATION WHILE THE SCOOTER IS BEING RIDDEN, THERE COULD BE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SUB-HARNESS WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW ANY WATER BETWEEN THE WIRE HARNESS AND THE FUEL PUMP TO DRAIN OUT BEFORE IT REACHES THE FUEL PUMP. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTORS. IF EITHER THE MAIN WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR OR THE FUEL PUMP CONNECTORS IS ALREADY CORRODED, THE CORRESPONDING ASSEMBLY(IES) WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 9, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

The defect: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, A LEAK AT THE FUEL PUMP SEAL MAY ALLOW FUEL LEAKAGE.
The risk: FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP SEAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 18, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

ONCE ENGINE WAS WARMED UP, VEHICLE STALLED AT STOPLIGHTS TWICE AND ONCE WHEN STARTING TO MOVE AFTER A STOP (WHEN IN AN INTERSECTION). OTHER TIMES WHEN STOPPED. IDLE SPEED DROPPED BELOW 1400, UNDER WHICH IT STALLS, AND IT WAS DIFFICULT TO REV THE ENGINE TO PREVENT STALLING SINCE THERE IS NO NEUTRAL GEAR, SO REVVING MORE THAN SLIGHTLY CAN MAKE THE VEHICLE MOVE. *TR

I HAD A NEW 2005 MAJESTY (YAMAHA) SCOOTER. IT WOULD ON OCCASION STALL. I HAD IT TWICE STALL WHILE MERGING ONTO THE FREEWAY. THIS ALMOST RESULTED IN A CRASH, BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER AND RESTART THE ENGINE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ECU AND I HAVE NOT ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. *TR

2005 YAMAHA MAJESTY 400CC SCOOTER STALLING IN TRAFFIC. ENGINE WAS WARM, COMING TO A STOP. ENGINE STALLED AROUND 5-10MPH. THIS IS THE 5TH TIME SINCE NEW. CONDITION VERY SERIOUS, AS I WAS ALMOST RUN OVER BY TRAFFIC DUE TO SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER/DRIVE. THIS IS A LAWSUIT FOR SURE. ON A VERY SMALL YAMAHA SCOOTER FORUM, THERE ARE ALREADY 38 OTHER RIDERS WITH THIS EXACT SAME SCOOTER THAT HAS STALLED AT LEAST ONCE. HTTP://MAJESTYUSA.COM/FORUMS/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?T=486&POSTDAYS=0&POSTORDER=ASC&START=0. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS COMPLAINT I'M FILING. I ALMOST GOT SERIOUSLY INJURED OR LOST MY LIFE YESTERDAY DUE TO THIS ISSUE. SINCERELY, THOMAS *TR

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
