Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

Overview

Our database contains 27 NHTSA owner-reported complaints for the 2002 Yamaha Yzfr6l, most frequently naming the electrical, transmission and engine categories.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

I HAVE 2002 YAMAHA YZFR6 THAT HAS NEVER BEEN RACED AND HAS BEEN RIDDEN NORMALLY THROUGH IT'S LIFETIME. SECOND GEAR HAS STARTED TO SLIP. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE R6. I HAVE NOT REPAIRED THE MOTORCYCLE YET BUT REPAIRS WILL REPLACE SECOND GEAR, SIXTH GEAR, THE SHIFT FORK FOR THE GEAR AND THE SHIFT DRUM. REPAIR COST IS QUOTED AT APPROXIMATELY $1500.*AK

I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2002 YAMAHA R6 IN THE SPRING OF 2003. IT WAS PURCHASED AS A LEFTOVER FROM POWER MOTORSPORTS IN PALATINE IL. IT CURRENTLY HAS 5,684 MILES ON IT, AND I CAME HOME SATURDAY AFTER A RIDE AND NOTICED THAT BATTERY ACID WAS LEAKING ALL OVER THE SWINGARM AND CHAIN, AND SOME OTHER STUFF THAT I PROBABLY CAN'T SEE. I CONTACTED ROXY'S CYCLES IN CHAMBERSBURG PA WHERE I CURRENTLY LIVE, AND THEY SAID TO CONTACT YAMAHA WHICH I HAVE NOT DONE YET.*AK

I OWN A 2002 YAMAHA R6 WITH ONLY 2,400MILES, AND THE BATTERY LEAKED ACID ALL OVER OTHER COMPONETS OF THE BIKE RUINING THE APPERANCE OF IT. THE FACTORY WARRANTY IS OVER BUT I PURCHASED A 3 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY. THROUGH TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF THE YAMAHA PEOPLE THEY WILL ONLY COVER ONE SMALL COMPONENT AND NOT REPLACE ALL THE PIECES OF IT THAT ARE RUINED. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURED TO HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THEY ARE BLAMING IT ON THE CUSTOMER INSTEAD IT IS REALLY YAMAHA'S FAULT OR THE BATTERY MANUFACTURER. I WANT SOMETHING TO BE DONE AND MY BIKE TO BE COMPLETLY FIXED SO THIS DOESNT HAPPEN AGAIN. I DID NOT SPEND $8,000 TO HAVE IT'S VALUE RUINED BECAUSE OF YAMAHA AND THEY NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.*AK

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
