Fuel Leak - Motorycle
ODI began investigating this issue after owners of model year (MY) 2004-2011 R-series BMW motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on November 16, 2012, BMW had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, BMW re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13V-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13V-617, BMW voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from ODI'soriginal scope, MY2005-2008 R-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all MY 2005-2011 R-series, MY 2005-2011 K12&13 models, MY 2010-2011 RR models, and the MY 2012 K1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337

THE VEHICLE STALLS WHEN DECELERATING TO LOW SPEED OR TO A STOP. IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND MOST OFTEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS HOT AFTER LENGTHY DRIVING IN WEATHER IN EXCESS OF 90 DEGREES F. THIS IS A WIDELY RECOGNIZED PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR AND THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ISSUED. MY VEHICLE HAS NO OPEN RECALLS, SO I ASSUME IT HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM (I AM SECOND OWNER). BIKE HAS 24000 MILES AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS DESPITE PRESUMED RECALL REMEDY. THIS HAPPENED TO ME ON INTERSTATE, MIDDLE LANE WHEN TRAFFIC SLOWED...VERY DANGEROUS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW K1300 GT. WHILE RIDING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE ODOR OF FUEL WAS PRESENT. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED FUEL HAD LEAKED FROM THE FUEL PUMP WHERE THE BOSS THREADED INTO THE FLANGE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE MOTORCYCLE WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED PER THE MANUFACTURER'S CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 038538 FOR THE SAME FAILURE IN 2014. DURING THE REPAIRS, A REINFORCEMENT RING WAS INSTALLED TO PREVENT THE SAME FAILURE FROM OCCURRING. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,815.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW K1300 GT MOTORCYCLE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT HIS PANTS WERE WET FROM FUEL THAT WAS LEAKING FROM A PLASTIC CONNECTOR LINE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE STARTED TO MISFIRE. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL WAS BLOWING ONTO THE ENGINE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN HIM SUSTAINING BURN INJURIES. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT RECEIVED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD FILE A REPORT AND PROVIDE AN EVALUATION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000. *TT *TR *JS

WHEN ACCELERATING AROUND 4500 TO 5500 RPM, THE ENGINE BOGS AND THE MOTORCYCLE LOSES SPEED. OTHER TIMES, AND AT CRUISING SPEEDS, WHEN TURNING THE THROTTLE TO ACCELERATE AT LOWER SPEEDS, THE BIKE DOES NOT ACCELERATE IMMEDIATELY AND TAKES A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE IT ACCELERATES. WHEN PULLING IN THE CLUTCH TO CHANGE GEARS, THE ENGINE STALLS. THIS CAN HAPPEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN OR DRIVING DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD. THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY. *TR

MY SWITCHES, RIGHT&LEFT, BOTH FAILED FOR THE 2ND TIME IN ABOUT 3 YEARS. MY RIGHT SIDE SWITCH FAILED WHILE I WAS RIDING MY BIKE, CAUSING ITS STALLING! SO ABOVE AND BEYOND THE SWITCH ISSUES, THE STALLING ISSUE IS THE MOST ANNOYING AS THAT CAN DIRECTLY EFFECT YOUR SAFETY. I THINK A COUPLE K1300S DRIVERS HAVE REPORTED CRASHES BECAUSE OF IT. THAT IS CERTAINLY NOTHING TO BE DOWNPLAYED. YOU KNOW WHY REPORTS ARE COMING OUT NOW THAT BMW IS FINALLY LOOKING INTO THE PROBLEM? BECAUSE PEOPLE FILED THE REPORTS, COMPLAINED ON THE FORUMS AND CALLED BMWNA TO SEE WHAT THE HECK WAS GOING ON AND FOR THEM TO GET OFF THEIR ARZSSES! I AM TRYING TO ENCOURAGE THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN OR MAY BE IMPACTED BY THESE PROBLEMS (SWITCH FAILURES AND NOW THE STALLING) TO TAKE PROACTIVE OWNERSHIP OF THE PROBLEM AND NOT LEAVE OUR COLLECTIVE SAFETY IN THE HANDS OF BMWNA. NOW, IF THE DEALERS DON'T HAVE THE SWITCHES (PLANO, TX AND NASHVILLE, TN), IT IS BMWNA'S FAULT - NO? IF THEY KNOW THAT BIKES HAVE HAD BAD SWITCHES ON THEM, BMW SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THOSE BIKES THAT ARE AFFECTED, DISTRIBUTE ENOUGH SWITCHES TO THE DEALERS AND REPLACE THEM ALL! BUT, THAT IS NOT HAPPENING. WHY NOT? I'M SORRY, BUT I DON'T BUY INTO THE "NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT THAT" THEORY. I DON'T CARE WHAT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS, IT CAN BE FIXED. FIXING IT YOURSELF AND AVOIDING BECOMING STRANDED IS NOT SILLY. "THE PROBLEM IS A LITTLE MORE COMPLEX THEN JUST CUTTING AND SPLICING TWO WIRES TOGETHER." DO WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHEN THE PROBLEM SWITCHES WERE MADE? DO WE KNOW WHAT BIKES (MADE WHEN?) WILL HAVE THE PROBLEM? WHEN DID THE ASSEMBLY LINE CHANGE TO THE ALLEGEDLY "REDESIGNED SWITCHES"? *TR

LEFT HAND-SIDE MULTISWITCH FAILURE. LEFT WITHOUT HORN, TURN SIGNALS, WINDSHIELD ADJUSTMENT ETC. OPERATING ANY BIKE WITHOUT AN OPERATIONAL MULTISWITCH TO CONTROL THE FUNCTIONS ENUMERATED ABOVE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL. SAFETY CHECK WILL EXPIRE SOON AND CAN'T PASS IT WITHOUT AN OPERATING MULTISWITCH. REPLACING IT BY BMW COSTS OVER $700. IT SEEMS THAT BMW HAS A LONG HISTORY WITH FAULTY MULTISWITCHES, BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT HAND SIDE. BMW SHOULD BE DETERMINED TO OFFER A RECALL ON THEIR MULTISWITCHES IMMEDIATELY! *TR

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.
ENGINE
Engine is difficult to start or does not start when at operating temperature, but after the vehicle coolsthe engine will start. This is caused by increased engine slip torque when the engine is at operatingtemperature in conjunction with a weak battery.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle âÂÂdischarged batteryâ complaints.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
BMW Motorrad USA has become aware of a potential durability issue with the film type fuel level sender âÂÂFuel Stripâ equipped on certain model year 2005 to 2013 R and K series motorcycles.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
One of the following situations can occur when connecting to BN2000 motorcycles: 1. The installed control units cannot be found when reading out with ISTA. 2. Control units initially communicate after connecting to the vehicle, but communication later stops.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
Discharged Battery Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed: The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints. In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of the discharged battery cannot be identified. This increases the chances of a repeat repair.
ENGINE
Oil leak at theseal between the cylinder head cover and cylinder head on the right in the direction of travel. Due to retrofit of chain gauide which prevents skipping of the timing chain.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
