Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

BRP has a recall for the output shaft for the 2018 Can Am Spyder F3T. Just after receiving the recall letter the output shaft on my Spyder went out. My bike does have more than the 37,000 miles on it. This is a known defect with this Bike. It is not right that BRP knows this part is defective and has a milage limit on it. This bike is my daily driver for work. I have contacted BRP and have been told as my bike has more miles that i am just up a creek without a paddle as I still owe more than $11,000. on this bike. I have asked for a call back and have not received any. I think this is wrong of them to put a milage cap on this part as it is designed to last the bike its lifetime. I have even told them i would cover parts if they would cover labor on this. I just really need some help with this issue. The affected part is the engine output shaft, which is part of the vehicle’s powertrain and propulsion system. BRP issued Recall 24V-728 for this defect, stating that the shaft can break and cause a sudden loss of propulsion, creating a safety hazard. I received the recall notice in April 2025 and have been unable to safely operate the vehicle since then. I contacted every authorized Can-Am dealer within 150 miles, but all confirmed they could not perform the recall repair because replacement parts were unavailable. The first available dealer, Team Mancuso Powersports Southwest, accepted the vehicle on September 23, 2025, and has now had it for over three weeks with no estimated repair date. Several dealers have indicated that this is a nationwide parts shortage, suggesting the manufacturer has not supplied recall parts to service centers. BRP Customer Relations confirmed that parts are back ordered with no ETA and cited border and customs delays as the reason. As a result, my vehicle has been inoperable for over five months, and the defect remains unresolved. The manufacturer has not provided a repair, replacement, or refund as required under federal recall law (49 U.S.C. §30120). This delay affects my safety and that of other riders since the recall defect directly impacts vehicle propulsion. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate BRP’s handling of Recall 24V-728 and ensure the manufacturer provides a timely, lawful remedy to affected owners.

While riding at approximately 65 miles per hour, the vehicle started to get slower and slower until it eventually came to a stop. The vehicle had 15,451 miles on the odometer at the time of the failure and had to be towed to a dealership for inspection / repair. The dealer advised that the shaft that the sprocket rides on had excessive play and that the intermediate shaft failed / snapped.

While driving on a straight stretch of highway at posted highway speeds of 75mph, no additional acceleration, torque, turning, or high rpms, my bike experienced a sudden jolt and immediate loss of propulsion. I was able to pull to the side of the highway to find my front left drive shaft had completely sheared off, the front sproket (currently under recall, which has not yet been replaced according to my dealer's service records) thankfully was caught by the frame underneath or it could have flown out into traffic and hit the other biker behind me or other traffic, or causing me to crash. My drive belt remained fully in tact but was dislodged and dragging, another risk factor for crash. There was absolutely NO warning indicators, lamps, warning lights, messages at all. I definitely felt my life was at risk with this issue. The bike has only 8400 miles on it. Upon additional research online, it shows others have had this same issue and have stated possible casting defects of the drive shaft from the manufacturer. I have the parts currently in my posession, and have an appointment June 26, 2024 with the dealer for inspection.

Shifting / stalling problems: 2018 F3L SE6 **Problem has occurred using each of my 2 Spyder keys Problem definition: At times, bike stalls while driving...begins shaking and remains in last gear prior to the stall. Gear shown in Display does not change from gear it was last in when bike stalled out. Orange exclamation point ! (Vehicle Malfunction) appears on lower left corner of Display and the last gear the bike was in prior to stalling still appears on Display. The gray banner, Transmission Fault also flashed quickly on Display for 2 of the 4 total fault occurrences. This happened when I was traveling in higher gears, approx. RPM at 3900-4200, as in 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear. It stalls with no power to throttle and loss of shifting. **What I do to clear error – so far: Pull off road, turn bike key off, wait a few minutes, remove / reinsert key. Sometimes had to do the re-start procedure 2-3 times before display error clears. ONLY if Display error is cleared do I have power on the engine. Sometimes can start bike with error still in display, but have NO POWER from throttle to engine. Stalling issues happened to me: 7/31/22, 08/04/22, 08/17/22. Dealer duplicated issue - see invoices. BRP Can-Am: had dealer "reprogram"? or update the VCM, and to clean the HCM.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
