Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:SUPPLY:COMPRESSOR

May 2, 2007
1,896 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY CONVENTIONAL AND TILT CAB TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 7.8L DIESEL ENGINES AND AIR BRAKES, THE AIR COMPRESSOR MAY NOT BUILD ENOUGH AIR PRESSURE TO SUPPORT THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM.
The risk: IF THIS CONDITION WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY (BRAKES APPLIED) THE AIR BRAKES WOULD REMAIN APPLIED AND PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING. IF THIS CONDITION WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, THE DUAL SYSTEM AIR PRESSURE GAUGES WOULD REGISTER THE DROP IN PRESSURE. IF THE PRESSURE CONTINUED TO DROP, THE LOW AIR PRESSURE WARNING BUZZER AND WARNING LAMP WOULD ACTIVATE AS DESIGNED, WARNING THE DRIVER TO MOVE THE VEHICLE TO A SAFETY LOCATION. IF THE DRIVER IGNORES THESE WARNINGS AND CONTINUES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, AND IF THERE WAS A CONTINUED LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE REAR SPRING PARKING BRAKES WOULD AUTOMATICALLY APPLY, PREVENTING THE TRUCK FROM BEING DRIVEN.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AIR COMPRESSOR HEAD. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.
