What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Problem with Steering column rattle
The contact's daughter owns a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist failed to operate as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, extra effort was needed to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or inspected for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls related to the failure for the VIN. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the power steering and brakes became inoperable. The driver was able to coast to the side of the road. The check engine warning light was illuminated after the failure. The vehicle was towed to her parent's residence. The vehicle was serviced by an independent mechanic, who stated that the failure was due to the ignition switch. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not covered under the recall. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V171000 (Electrical System). The failure mileage was approximately 260,000.

From owner reports, verbatim
Fuel lines leak around fuel tank, causing a fuel smell around the vehicle and a major fire hazard
Air bag says it needs serviced Gas gadge is all over the place hard to tell how much gas I actually have in my tank.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Air bag says it needs serviced Gas gadge is all over the place hard to tell how much gas I actually have in my tank.
The contact owned a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that, while her daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed during an ice and rainstorm with poor visibility, a vehicle parked sideways in the middle of the roadway suddenly appeared. Unable to stop in time, the vehicle collided with the driver's side rear of the other vehicle, causing it to spin and veer onto the shoulder of the roadway before coming to a complete stop. The air bags deployed but failed to properly inflate, greatly reducing their effectiveness, which the contact held responsible for the various injuries sustained by the three occupants. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a storage facility and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. All three occupants were transported to a local hospital by EMTs. The driver was treated for facial injuries sustained from striking the steering wheel. The minor occupant, who was seat-belted in the front passenger seat, was treated for injuries suffered to the right side of their forehead after hitting and breaking the front windshield, as well as a contusion across their chest caused by the seat belt. The contact was treated for a dislocated left shoulder and sustained multiple bruises. The manufacturer was notified of the incident, opened a case, and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for further assistance. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was unknown.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
My car had a fuel pump go, then within MONTHS, another. We then dealt with the SAME problem symptomatically, and was told it was the fuel pump sensor. Within the last few weeks, I am having all the same issues-including the car intermittently not starting, gasoline leaking from the vehicle, both noticably missing from the gauge (i.e 1/8 tank less than night prior), odor of gas in the car, stalling out while driving and trying to start it, but also now dripping gas from the car. A new issue popped up, which is the dash light coming up saying "check gas cap". This past Thursday, my car wouldn't start again, and has not started since. It's concerning that the Chevy Cobalt has had recalls for the same exact problems, literally thousands of complaints that mirror mine- for every model year EXCEPT the 2010. It's also interesting that they also stopped producing the Cobalt entirely in 2010 too, but considering the amount of faults and issues I've seen documented in every year model it's not a shock. I'm concerned that despite the amount of complaints that include 2010 models, they were excluded from the recall and seeing that my situation is another one that won't be covered, fixed, or made right by GM is something that doesn't make sense. I have also seen, that in 2021 an investigation was launched specifically into this exact issue with the 2010, as well. I'm carless right now, with no answers from Chevy other than that it's not part of the recall, yet it's part of the problem. Something is VERY wrong here. It's shocking they wouldn't recall a vehicle knowing it's dripping gas, pooling gas, it's such a hazard for not only anyone driving them, but anyone driving near us or even PARKED near us. Please help do something! Also I have videos of my car dripping, 2 days prior to it not starting, if there is somewhere I could send those as well.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that fuel was leaking from the fuel lines near the rear wheel well. There was an abnormal odor of fuel detected. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no further assistance was provided. The contact mentioned NHTSA Action Number: PE20011 (FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER). The failure mileage was approximately 166,000.

Internal mechanism of the driver-side door handle broke and the door would not open from the inside. Tne dealership confirmed that the inside door ah glue is broken. The cable retainer snapped apart and the cable cannot stay connected. This might be available for inspection. Driver must exit the vehicle by crawling over to the passenger side. The problem has been confirmed by a Chevrolet dealer. There were no warning lamps or messages. The manufacturer no longer makes this part and it could not be replaced. Service description says that the customer had an electrical concern and that the door would not unlock from the inside. This was inaccurate. It was mechanical. The door could unlock, it could not open. The dealership would not let the diagnosis proceed until the customer agreed to that statement. The dealership inaccurately recorded the mileage.
DOOR HANDLES BROKE AND DOOR COULD NOT BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE OR INSIDE. I WILL SAVE THE HANDLE FOR EVIDENCE IF YOU NEED THEM

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL QUIT WORKING. I HAVE TO TURN IT ON AND WHEN I HAVE MADE MY TURN I HAVE TO FLIP IT OFF MYSELF OR IT DOES NOT GO OFF. I BELIEVE THIS FAILS TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NUMBER 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVISES AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT. IF THE TURN-SIGNALS DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY DEACTIVATE, THE DRIVER MAY FAIL TO TURN THEM OFF MANUALLY. AN ERRONEOUS ACTIVE TURN-SIGNAL MAY MISLEAD PEDESTRIANS AND OTHER DRIVERS, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. OF COURSE THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. I DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE SAFETY RISK. I GLANCE THROUGH THE SAFETY ISSUE RECALLS AND SAW THAT A 2019 GM AUTOMOBILE WAS RECALLED WITH THIS ISSUE STATING THE FMVSS SAFETY STANDARD; THEREFORE, I AM SUBMITTING THIS SAME ISSUE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V117000.
MY COBALT ILLUMINATES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AS WELL AS THE THEFT LIGHT AND DISPLAYS ENGINE POWER REDUCED HAPPENS MULTIPLE TIMES FIRST TIME IT STARTED WAS IN 12/2017. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED IN 2011 ALWAYS SERVICED AND REPAIRED BY DEALER SHIP. THE CAR STALLS AT STOP SIGNS LIGHTS OR WHEN YOU PULL INTO A PARKING LOT. ENGINE LIGHT COMES AND GOES. LIGHTS DIM AND FLICKER THE GAUGES JUMP UP AND DOWN IN THE DASH. AFTER YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF THE GAUGES IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER JUMP ADN MAKE TICKING NOISE. WHEN THERE IS NO ENGINE LIGHT PRESENT THE CAR IDLES ROUGH AND ACTS LIKE ITS GOING TO DIE TILL YOU START DRIVING THEN ITS FINE. THE ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES ARE WHEN YOU TO PRESS THEM THE PEDAL WILL DEPRESS ALL THE WAY BUT ITS LIKE IT DONT MEET WITH THE PAD, THIS PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AS WELL. OBD2 CODES HAVE BEEN P0641 P0017 P0651 P0573 CURRENT CODES STORED ARE P0340 P0300 P0341. I'VE HAD THIS CAR AT THE DEALER AND MULTIPLE SHOPS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS NOW WITHOUT RESOLUTION. IT'S BECOMING MORE OF A PROBLEM THAN ANYTHING ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR ON THE INTERSTATE AND IT DIES OR COMING UP TO A STOP LIGHT/ SIGN, A CAR PULLS OUT OR AN ANIMAL AND YOUR BRAKES FAIL TO STOP YOU! IT IS A VERY SCARY SITUATION. THE CAR DOES HAVE HIGH MILES BUT I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS TILL DECEMBER OF 2017 MILEAGE IS 203,602 ALL MAINTENANCE IS PERFORMED UNDER RECOMMENDED MILEAGE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET COBALT EQUIPPED WITH COOPER EVOLUTION TOUR TIRES, SIZE: 195/60/R15 (NA). WHILE DRIVING, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE FLATTENED AND THE CONTACT FOUND A BUBBLE NEAR THE RIM OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER REQUESTED THE CONTACT BRING THE VEHICLE TO AN UNKNOWN COOPER TIRE DEALER. THE DEALER DENIED SERVICE, STATED THAT THE TIRE WAS NOT DEFECTIVE, AND BLAMED THE CONTACT. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER DENIED THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE AND BLAMED THE CONTACT. THE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE AND VIN WERE UNKNOWN.
MY GIRLFRIEND AND I WERE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE EARLY ONE MORNING. THERE WAS NO RAIN OR BAD ROAD CONDITIONS AND PRAYS GOD HARDLY ANY TRAFFIC AT ALL. ONE MINUTE EVERYTHING WAS FINE AND WITHIN A SPLIT SECOND THERE WAS A LOUD THUD BELOW OUR FEET. MY GIRLFRIEND LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND WE WERE THROWN ACROSS THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE AND SLAMMED INTO THE GUARD CABLES WHICH AT THAT POINT IN TIME THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE GUARD CABLES CATAPULTED US BACK ACROSS THE INTERSTATE WERE WE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR STOPPED. THE FIRST QUESTION OUT OF THE ARKANSAS STATE TROOPERS AND THE LOCAL COUNTY OFFICERS MOUTHS TO US WAS,"WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR WHOLE DRIVER SIDE WHEEL?". THE TROOPER WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT A "BLOWOUT" DUE TO THE FACT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO TRASH ON THE ROAD OR OFF THE ROAD THE ROAD THEY WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH A BLOW OUT. THAT'S WHEN WE TOLD HIM THE CAR HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NOT 9 DAYS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT AND THE WHEELS AND TIRES AND BEEN ROTATED, THE OIL CHANGED AND AN INSPECTION COMPLETED ON THE CAR AND THEY TRIED TO SAY EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT OK. WELL NOW JUST AS A PASSENGER I HAVE 2 FRACTURED VERTEBRAE IN MY BACK, CANT SLEEP, HAD TO QUIT SCHOOL AND I HAVE NO IDEA OF WHICH WAY TO TURN TO GET THE HELP I NEED. FRIENDS PLEASE BE CAREFUL DRIVING THESE CARS. PLEASE. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A CHEVROLET MALFUNCTION OR DEFECTIVE PART. NOW WHAT DO I DO? *TR

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION AND THE KEY WAS STUCK IN THE ON POSITION. I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND HAD TO DROP THE CLUTCH AND STALL IT TO KILL THE ENGINE. CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY BY 1 MONTH FOR BUMPER TO BUMPER. TALKED WITH MY LOCAL DEALER AND AFTER DISCUSSING IT WITH GM SAID THEY WOULD COVER THE $300-$400 REPAIR WITH $100 DEDUCTIBLE. I ORDERED AN AFTERMARKET IGNITION CYLINDER FOR $42 AND REPLACED IT MYSELF. I FOUND THE SPRING FOR ONE OF THE TUMBLERS POPPED OUT OF PLACE WHEN I REMOVED THE ORIGINAL. POOR DESIGN. *TR
I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2010 AND I DIDN'T START NOTICING PROBLEMS TILL AROUND SUMMER BUT THEY WERE NOT THAT BAD TILL SEPTEMBER WERE THE CAR STARTED SHOWING STRANGE ELECTRICAL AND STEERING ISSUE. I RECEIVED THE RECALL LETTER IN OCTOBER AND HAD THE POWER STEERING ISSUE FIXED BUT ITS STILL HAVE ISSUES WERE THE VEHICLE WILL SWERVE BACK AND FORTH IN RETURN I WILL HAVE TO KEEP MY HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO TRY TO KEEP IT FROM HITTING OTHER VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY. THEN THE BLOWER MOTOR THAT BLOWS THE HOT AND COLD AIR SOMETIMES ISTATICALLY REVS UP HIGH AND I HAVE TO TURN OF THE HEATER. ALSO I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES SQUEAL AND I ONLY HAVE 10,300 MILES. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE NEEDLES ON THE GAUGES IN THE DASH TEND TO TWITCH RADICALLY WHEN I TURN THE VEHICLE OFF SOMETIMES. THEN AT TIMES THE CAR WHEN TURNED ON WILL START TO ACT AS IF IT WAS TO SHUT OFF AND THE LIGHTS WOULD ALL DIM AND THEN IT WOULD STABILIZE. IT HAS DONE THAT ON THE HIGHWAY MAKING STEERING DIFFICULT AT TIMES. THE ENGINE AS WELL HAD MADE KNOCKING NOISES TO ITS BEEN AN OFF AND ON THING. *TR
