Safety Complaint: Engine Stall/Loss of Power at Highway Speeds – 2014 Chevy Equinox Incident Details: • The Failure: While driving, the vehicle suddenly stopped responding to the accelerator. I was forced to navigate through highway traffic to the shoulder with no engine power. Once stopped, the vehicle would not restart. • Warning Signs: Leading up to the event, the Check Engine light and Battery light flickered intermittently. • Diagnostic History: Prior to the breakdown, a technician replaced the starter and checked the battery, yet the Check Engine light remained on. The engine exhibited high RPMs (reaching 3,000+) during normal acceleration before the total failure. • Safety Risk: This defect caused a complete loss of propulsion in high-speed traffic, placing myself and my infant in immediate danger of a high-speed rear-end collision.

I have had several codes pop up on my Equinox, such as P0016, P0017, P0089 and P228D. All of these codes are between the Crankshaft position, variable timing position and high pressure fuel issues. I almost wrecked my SUV because of these 3 factors and I have seen thousands of videos on YouTube with other people having the same issues. This is beyond dangerous to be out on the road driving and these codes pop up causing "Reduce Speed" warnings and "Stabilitrak". This will be the 2nd time I've had to replace the Crankshaft position sensor and Variable Timing Solenoid, along with a brand new timing kit that I had put on right after I bought the car over a year ago, that is now in need of repair. There has to be some way that Chevrolet can fix these issues for those of us who buy their vehicles. They are supposed to be safe, dependable, durable and last longer than what they do before they start having all of these issues. I have had so many problems with the last 2 Equinox's that I have owned and each one of them have all had the same error messages pop up within a year or less of driving them, some have lasted over a year. I as a vehicle owner should not be held responsible for these kinds of issues going on in a vehicle that I still owe for. Chevrolet needs to understand and take care of their customers to prevent accidents from happening, vehicles from breaking down after short periods of time and replace/repair these malfunctions at their cost so that people like me don't keep going out here spending hundreds of dollars for the same fix after a year or 2 replacing, and it sometimes still not even fix the problem. There are so many others out here with the same exact issues that I am having, P0016, P0017, P0089 and 228D codes all dealing with fuel, vehicle speed, Stabilitrak, etc. Something has to be done about this and there has to be a way where they can be fixed for longer than 50,000 miles

While driving down the interstate at approximately 70 mph the equinox would locks would start to cycle and at the same time the service stabiltrak and service power steering line would come on and the vehicle would drastically slow to around 30-40 mph, almost causing an accident. This is a well known issue with Chevrolet and they have not tried to resolve the issue. This is going to cause major issues when someone gets in a wreck. There is no definite fix out there for this issue and Chevrolet needs to be held accountable for this and fix this issue.

Service Stabilitrak & Power Steering light comes on after initial start up or in the middle of driving intermittently cause car to jolt back & forth while driving which can cause an accident if someone or car is near, could hear that car was attempting to lock & unlock doors while errors appear on dash. When changing gears a jolt and loud knock sounds occurs, now check engine light appears, this has caused a new issue now code states to replace transmission valve body assembly…Unable to locate part anywhere & I’m not clear what may be causing issue since it happens intermittently. Changed battery, msgs stopped appearing on dash for a week. Boom hopes were high now msgs are there again….Total nightmare. I just bought this car!!!

My vehicle has all symptoms of the timing chain slipping or being loose. Just as millions of others who owns a chevy equinox with a 2.4 motor. Drives like crap, stalls out unexpectedly, which is very dangerous, exhaust fumes enter cabin of vehicle, toxicity to lungs. Extreme fuel intake consumption, erotic idle issues, extreme oil consumption all these issues have progressively gotten worse. This is very much a safety hazard in more than ONE way! GM needs to be held responsible and FIX THEIR problem selling such faulty and pitiful parts to their customers. After this I will NEVER own a chevy again. HIGHLY disappointed! Fixing a timing chain issue is NOT cheap, nor should it be the responsibility of any chevy equinox owner seeing as how there are so many other people who share the SAME issue, like duh. obviously, this is a manufacturer defect. HOW HAS THIS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET??????? This issue is a safety risk hazard to the customers of this vehicle. Obviously, the timing chains in these 2.4 motors of all years of equinox's are defective and GMC are the ones who need to be held responsible and fix THEIR mistakes, this is ridiculous, how has a recall not happened, there are millions of people with the SAME COMPLAINT???

THE 2014 CHEVY EQUINOX WILL STALL WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED, THIS COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSEAN ACCIDENT. I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE IN NUMEROUS TIMES AND SPENT OVER 2K ON REPAIRS. CURRENTLY MY VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, NO CODES. IT APPEARS THAT EVERYTHING IS OPERATING NORMALLY. IT IS NOT, I WILL NOT LET MY WIFE DRIVE THIS CAR BECAUSE I AM WORRIED THAT SHE COULD BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I RECENTLY FOUND THAT GM HAD IDENTIFIED THAT THIS VEHICLE CONSUMES A LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL AND IT CAUSING ISSUES SIMILAR TO WHAT I AM REPORTING. ONLY ISSUE IS THEY ARE REQUIRING A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST REQUIRING MULTIPLE VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. IN THE MEAN TIME I AM GOING TO CONTINUE TO STALL PULLING INTO TRAFFIC, PUTTING MY LIFE AND OTHERS LIFE AT RISK. THERE NEEDS TO BE A MANDATORY RECALL AND CORRECT THIS ISSUE. THE ATTACHED PICTURE SHOWS THE LAST TWO OIL CHANGES AND THE AMOUNT OF OIL RETRIEVED. MY MOST RECENT I HAD LESS THAN 2.5 QUARTS LEFT. THERE IS NO LEAK ON MY VEHICLE, AND I CHANGE MY OIL ABOUT EVERY 5K MILES PER MANUFACTURER SUGGESTIONS.

PURCHASED MY PRE-DRIVEN SUV 88 DAYS AGO. AFTER PUMPING GAS, I ATTEMPTED TO START MY CAR & IT WOULDN'T START. I TURNED OFF THE RADIO, TRIED AGAIN BECAUSE IT WAS COLD OUT IT STARTED BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY THE 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' CANMR ON. WHILE IDLING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT LESS THAN A MIN LATER, IT CUT-OFF AGAIN! ANOTHER CAR WAS RIGHT BEHIND ME. I TURNED ON MY FLASHERS & STARTED UP AGAIN. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AT MY NEXT STOP, IT CUT-OFF AGAIN! I RESTARTED MY CAR, KEPT MY FLASHERS ON AND PRAYED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET TRYING TO ARRIVE HOME TO BEAT THE EXPECTED 'ICESTORM' I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPT BUT THEY WERE CLOSED BUT WOULD CALL BACK. THE NEXT MORNING I HAD MY CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER - 13 MILES AWAY. THE SERVICE DEPT. HAS HAD HAD MY CAR FOR MORE THAN 2 DAYS & COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THEY EVENTUALLY SAID THE ERROR CODE WAS P0010. THE PART NEEDED WAS: CAM SHAFT POSITION ACUATOR. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT THE DEALER SUGGESTED & I PAID FOR, REFUSED TO COVER PARTS, LABOR OR RENTAL REIMBURSEMENT EVEN AFTER ARGUING WITH THE SERVICE MGR. JUDGING BY THE COMMENTS/COMPLAINTS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE EQUINOX, I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. I AM A WIDOW, ON DISABILITY & NEED A RELIABLE VEHICLE BUT THIS DEFECT HAS PLACED ME IN A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION. I COULD HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED OR MUCH WORSE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THIS IS DANGEROUS! THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND REMEDIED ONCE-AND-FOR-ALL. I HAD NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR I WOULDN'T HAVE PURCHASED THIS CAR! ( I WAS ASKED TO VERIFY THE TYPE OF GAS - REGULAR UNLEADED NOT DIESEL & I HAVE MY RECEIPT OF PURCHASE.)

FIRST TWO DAYS OF HAVING VEHICLE WITH 36K MILES AND I'M AT A RED LIGHT AND THE THE CAR JUST SHUTS OFF. ALL THE LIGHT WERE ON AND THE GAS NEEDLE NEVER MOVED. I HAD TO CUT CAR OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON. AT THIS POINT IT WOULD CONTINUE TO SHUT OF IF I HAD TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I GOOGLED MY ISSUE AND WAS ABLE TO GET HOME SAFELY BY PUTTING CAR IN NEUTRAL EVERY TIME I HAD TO STOP. A CHIP WAS REPLACED. NOW I'M ALMOST AT 75K MILES AND THE STABILITRAK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON SIMULTANEOUSLY AND SOMETIMES WITH A LOSS OF POWER. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME 5 TIMES IN ONE WEEK. TOOK TO CHEVY DEALER AND THEY HAVE NO CLUE. WAITED FOUR HOURS FOR THEM TO TELL ME THAT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND ALL LIGHTS ARE OFF AND TO DRIVE UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS. THIS OCCURS IF I'M TURNING OR BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. SOMETIMES EVEN AFTER WAITING 15 SECONDS TO RESTART CAR, IT HAS TROUBLE TURNING OVER. I LET SIT FOR ANOTHER 15 SECONDS AND IT'S FINE WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT THE CHECK ENGINE REMAINS ON BUT WILL BE OFF IN THE MORNING. LOSING POWER ON A CONGESTED 6 LANE HIGHWAY WOULD NOT BE GOOD BUSINESS FOR CHEVROLET.
