What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Chevrolet Impala, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
For the last 2 years, the car willl come up saying airbag system issues. There airbag sensor under the passenger side seat will randomly throw a code for the erorr and then turn off. It does not have to be a bump, move the seat, Just goes off. We have had it professionally scanned and it is always the same sensor with the issue. We noticed certian models had recalls but our was not on the list for some reason even though it fits all the other models with same issue. The cost to get it repaired and a chevy dealer is astromical. There are too many dates to count of the light and sesnor error.
I believe the passenger seat occupant sensing and airbag issues from recall 16V507 have not been fixed. I am still having issues related to it, even though I had it fixed.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim

Smelled an odor of burning wires when using rear defroster. Defroster then stopped working. After further troubleshooting I observed the wire pigtail under the front passenger door was charred and burned. The pin inside the harness that was burned was the rear defroster. After further research I found this is very common for the Chevy impala. However no recall existed. I feel it is a fire risk due to the fact that the wires over heated enough to melt and char the plastic surrounding the electrical pin within the harness. Pictures was taken of the damage.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

I CRASHED HEADING DOWN A HILL .I CRASHED INTO A TELEPHONE POLE AFTER MY CAR SUDDENLY REVVED UP,GAINED SPEED AS I HEADED TOWARDS A TELEPHONE POLE ,WITH LOSS OF POWER STEERING ,BRAKES BECAUSE MY CAR QUIT AFTER GAINING SPEED DUE TO THE RPMS AMPING UP ON THEIR OWN AND GOING DOWN A HILL. WHEN I HIT THE POLE,THE TELEPHONE LINES SNAPPED AND I WAS TRAPPED IN THE CAR BECAUSE THEY LANDED ON MY DRIVER WINDOW AND WERE SHOOTING OUT SPARKS AS IF THEY WERE ROMAN CANDLES AND A FIRE STARTED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY CAR IN SOME PINE STRAW. WHEN THE FIREMEN WAS ABLE TO GET ME OUT OF THE CAR HE CAME TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AND BY THEN I HAD TAKEN MY SEAT BELT OFF AND THE FIREMAN ADVISED ME TO GET OUT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE IF I WAS ABLE AND I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS SCARED TO LET OFF THE BRAKE BECAUSE I THOUGHT FOR SOME REASON BEING OUT OF MY HEAD THAT THE CAR WAS GOING TO ROLL IF I LET OFF THE BRAKE AND HE TOOK HIS HAND AND SLAMMED THE CAR UP IN TO PARK BECAUSE I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE I HAD NOT PUT IT IN PARK. HE SAID YOU CAN LET YOUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE BECAUSE IT WILL NOT ROLL AND I SAID I'M TOO SCARED .I ASKED..CAN I PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AND HE SAID YES AND WHEN I DID IT WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. THEN I CONTINUED TO COME OUT THE PASSENGER SIDE AND HOP TO THE SIDEWALK WITH MY FEET TOGETHER JUST IN CASE ANYTHING WAS HOT AND TO KEEP FROM GETTING ELECTROCUTIED JUST IN CASE SOMETHING WAS STILL HOT AROUND US. WHEN I WAS STRUCK BY THE AIRBAG THE AND THE SEAT BELT DID ITS JOB I SUPPOSE BUT FOR SOME REASON MY NECK WAS YANKED SO HARD THAT IT HURTS SO BADD EVERYDAY WHEN I DIDN'T GO TO THE HOSPITAL.I WAS UNAWARE OF ANY RECALLS WHEN I PURCHASED FROM A DEALERSHIP ON JAN 18 2020. THE DAY BEFORE I CRASHED WE WERE TRAVELING UPHILL &I HAD A FRIEND WITH ME THAT HELPED GRAB THE WHEEL UNTIL IT STOPPED AFTER IT REVVED UP & QUIT.I ATTEMPTED TO CRANK IT 3XS WITH SUCCESS. I WAS STUNNED AS TO WHY IT DID IT .

2009 Chevy impala Airbag light comes on and off when it wants to bought it from a use dealer ship in 2022
I KNOW THIS SHOULDNT BE A SAFETY ISSUE BUT ON MOST EVERY IMPALA THE AC DOES A CLICKING NOISE AND BLOWS HOT WHEN THE AC IS ON AND BLOWS COLD WHEN THE HEAT IS ON ( WHICH COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE YOU CANT GET THE WINDOWS TO DEFROST) MOST PEOPLE I KNOW THEIR IMPALA DOES THIS. THIS SHOULD BE A FACTORY RECALL. WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY OUT THERE DOING THIS SAME ISSUE. THE CAR WILL NOT EVEN BE RUNNING AND THE TICKING NOISE WILL START IF YOU SHUT A CAR DOOR BESIDE IT.

WHILE DRIVING OIL PRESSURE LOW STOP ENGINE COMES ON IN MY DIC EVEN THOUGH MY OIL IS PERFECTLY FINE MY REAR TURNING SIGNAL IS NOT FLASHING BUT IS LIT AND WORKING FOR EVERYTHING ELSE MY TEMPERATURE GAUGE SHORTS OUT AT TIMES EVEN AFTER I REPLACED THE SENSOR PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF EVEN WITH PASSENGER INSIDE NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V507 NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 14V355 I BELIEVE THE TRUE PROBLEM IS THE BCM THE DOOR ACTUATORS ARE FAULTY
THE DRIVER'S SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT BURNS OUT AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME (WITHIN A FEW DAYS UP TO LESS THAN A WEEK). I HAVE REPLACED THE BULB MULTIPLE TIMES WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD. ALSO, REPLACED THE WIRE HARNESS AND IT STILL BURNS OUT THE BULB.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE REDUCED POWER WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE DECELERATED TO 45 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND RESUMED NORMALLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
IN JUNE 2010 I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE 90 WEST TOWARD DENVER CO. THE TERRAIN WAS STEEP AND WINDING AND DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC THE PACE WAS FAST. THE TRAFFIC AHEAD OF ME BEGAN SLOWING AND I BEGAN TO SLOW BY STEADY LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. MY BRAKES HEATED UP FAST AND I FOUND MYSELF WITHOUT BREAKS FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME DUE TO THE ROTORS FEELING AS THOUGH THEY WERE WARPED AND THE FRONT END STARTED VIBRATING. I DOWN SHIFTED TO 3RD. GEAR BUT THAT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO SLOW ME ENOUGH SO I DOWNSHIFTED TO 2ND AND THIS STILL WAS NOT ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN A DOWNHILL SPEED TO KEEP FROM HAVING TO USE THE BRAKES. FINALLY I SHIFTED TO !ST GEAR TO MAINTAIN THE SAFE SPEED THAT I NEEDED. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE THAT THE CAR FREEWHEELS SO EXCELLENT THAT EVEN ON LOWER GRADES AS EXPERIENCED IN THE CAROLINAS IN OCTOBER WHEN WE WERE THERE THE CAR IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GEAR DOWN SO AS NOT TO OVERHEAT THE BRAKES WHEN TRYING TO MAINTAIN POSTED SPEEDS IN MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRY. I DISCUSSED THIS WITH SOLOMON CHEVROLET IN DOTHAN WHERE I GET THE CAR SERVICED AND THE DEALER FROM WHOM I PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY HAD NO SUGGESTIONS BUT ASSURED ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO DEALERSHIP WISE TO HELP ME. I FEEL IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH DOES NOT SURFACE UNLESS YOU DRIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS. *TR
