What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
No power steering for 25min drive home. Next day it worked. Dealership said it had an expired recall for power steering fix. No work was done by dealership.
The power steering on my vehicle is not working. I believe it may be a malfunction with the torque sensor. It is available for inspection upon request. This was a safety risk because the steering wheel was shaking as I was driving. Thankfully, it never locked up on me while on the road, however if it had, it could've caused a life-threatening accident as I am constantly driving on large 4 lane highways. I know that there is a safety recall open for 2007 chevrolet malibu's regarding the torque sensor and power steering, however my vehicle does not seem to fall under this safety recall for some reason? I attempted to have it serviced by my local dealer, but they do not want to service it under the recall. I believe that if this is a known issue on SOME 2007 chevrolet malibu's, then it should be repaired under the safety recall even if my VIN is not associated with it.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The steering wheel start shaking and then on the middle console it showed “POWER STEERING”. Now whenever I drive it it’ll pop up and the steering wheel locks up and it is scary because it doesn’t move. And when I turn of the car it’ll unlock but as soon as I start driving it again it does it again.
I bought the car and the next day it randomly locked up my steering in the middle of traffic. If I turn my car off then turn it on while jerking the wheel side to side it will allow me power steering for just a short moment. Once it worked for a month continuously without shutting off on me then it randomly started locking up again. There’s no symptoms or warning except for the car steers on its own while in park. The wheel moves and makes a screeching noise. It’s locked up on me in traffic numerous times. It’s a huge hazard. Trying to get off the street when it locks up is just a safety hazard for everyone around.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY GAS GAUGE HASN'T BEEN WORKING FOR A FEW YEARS AND I WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THAT, IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF CHEVY MALIBUS HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM
my car has stalled multiple times while in use, on the highway. VERY SCARRY!
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I was driving and lost power randomly it came back in less than a minute but just lost power could certainly cause an accident... And the service airbag light is on and seemingly has the same issues as the 2010 Malibu Maxx which was recalled and replaced free of charge and frankly I don't have the 1200 $ to make sure it doesn't kill me I'm not sure why with as many 2007s that this is an issue in why it isn't recalled...
The contact's daughter owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning light illuminated and remained illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,111.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim

My power steering goes out when driving randomly. This has been happening for the last three or four weeks a few times a day. It happens when I'm driving on the highway it happens at all speeds the steering wheel consistently shakes. I have called many dealerships and they want to charge a fee for checking on my recalls. Nothing has been inspected by anyone but I do get warning messages about power steering failure and needing to check my air bag.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I can hear the U joint clicking like it wants to fail and suddenly randomly there is a loss of powersteering. This issue caused my father who is on oxygen to go to the hospital.
While driving along the highway the steering wheel began to turn slightly by itself and powering steering displayed on dash and wheel was hard to steer. Fuel pump floater goes out
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was vibrating. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. The steering wheel was uncontrollable and became inoperable. Additionally, there was an engine oil leak. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who completed unknown repairs. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number 15V064000 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 86,300. The VIN was not available.
When I start my car my steering wheel dances vibrates. When I'm driving 30 mph it will pull me to the right side of the road and be hard to steer. It does this a lot it scares me I'm disabled and have a hard time driving.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the four doors would inadvertently lock and unlock, causing the battery to drain quickly. The contact used pliers to unlock and open the doors. Additionally, the headlights were dimmed, and the turn signals intermittently failed to operate as needed. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the Body Control Module (BCM) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V252000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting, Vehicle Speed Control, Electronic Stability Control) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
The Vehicles brake lights are not working Properly. They are on when driving and no brake pedal pressure is applied. When you Apply Brake Pedal Pressure the Brake lights go out. This is a safety hazard cars approaching from the rear do not see a stopped car. Chevrolet had a Special policy and Technical bulletin regarding this issue. It stated that the electrical pins going to the body control computer did not have sufficient Contact. The Bulletin went on to say that to attempt to resolve the issue apply Dielectric Grease to the contacts in an effort to allow the contacts to make sufficient contact to pass the current. They also advised to secure the wiring Harness to the body control computer and structure of the car. This is a major Safety issue Effecting cars from 2006-2014.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim

MY SWAY BAR BROKE AND CAUSED ME TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I USED TO GET A WARNING TO "SERVICE AIRBAGS" ON THE STEREO DISPLAY, AND A CHIME, TYPICALLY WHEN I FIRST STARTED UP THE CAR. THIS STARTED WHEN I WAS LIVING IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. I DROVE WITH MY BACKPACK ON THE PASSENGER SEAT, AND OCCASIONALLY THAT SEAT WOULD CHIME FOR PASSENGER TO BUCKLE UP. THE SERVICE AIR BAG MESSAGE WOULD STAY UP FOR ABOUT 5 MILES OF DRIVING, THEN WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE AGAIN. FINALLY CAUGHT IT IN THE ACT, GOT IT TO A DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY TOLD ME THEIR DIAGNOSTIC CAME UP WITH A PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR WAS FAILING/HAD FAILED. THE ONLY REMEDY OFFERED WAS TO CLEAR THE COMPUTER, OR CONSIDER A BRAND NEW PASSENGER SEAT (WHICH AT THAT TIME EXCEEDED THE ESTIMATED BLUE BOOK VALUE). CLEARING THE COMPUTER OF THAT TROUBLE CODE LASTED ABOUT A WEEK. COULDN'T OFFER MORE INFO SUCH AS IF THE AIRBAG WOULDN'T DEPLOY IF NEEDED, OR IF IT WAS LIKE A JACK-IN-THE-BOX AND MIGHT TRIP UNNECESSARILY. THAT WAS ALMOST 5 YEARS AGO, THIS SUMMER IT STOPPED ADVISING ME OF THE NEED FOR SERVICE. I'M NOT SURE IF THE SENSOR FINALLY GAVE OUT, OR IF SOME COMPONENT(S) WERE DAMAGED IN A COLLISION THAT RIPPED OFF THE BUMPER THIS WINTER.
THIS VEHICLE HAS A SAFETY DESIGN FAULT WHERE THE PASSENGER PRESSENCE SENSOR(PPS) DEFAULTS CAUSING THE AIRBAG LIGHT TO COME ON DISSABLING THE WHOLE WHOLE AIRBAG PROTECTION SYSTEM. THIS CAR SHARES THE SAME PARTS WITH THE 2007 SATURN AURA WHOSE MODEL HAS BEEN SAFETY RECALLED FOR TE PPS.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE POWER STEERING HAS BEEN LOST ON MULTIPLE TIMES AND NOW IT HAPPENING MORE AND MORE FREQUENTLY. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING DURING THIS PAST YEAR. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WILL COME ON AND SIMULTANEOUSLY THE POWER STEERING IS LOST. IT TAKES A GREAT DEAL OF EFFORT TO STEER THE CAR AND MOVE OVER OR TURN A CORNER. IT'S A CRITICAL SAFETY FACTOR! FOR AN SENIOR WOMEN, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER.LUCKILY, IT'S ONLY HAPPENED ON CITY STREETS WHILE IN MOTION. IT HAS COME ON WHEN THE CAR HAS STOPPED, LIKE AT A TRAFFIC STOP. USUALLY, I CAN TURN THE CAR OFF AND TURN IT ON AGAIN. A DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS THE POWER STEERING SENSORS AND MY CAR IS NOT COVERED. THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM FOR OTHER 2007 MALIBU'S. I ALSO HAVE SAFETY CONCERNS BECAUSE I TRANSPORT MY ELDERLY MOTHER. CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY CAR IS NOT COVERED. DRIVERS SEAT BELT IS NOT ENGAGED - INDICATOR LIGHT SHOWS PROBLEM THAT IT IS NOT ENGAGED. CONCERNED IT WON'T WORK IN AN ACCIDENT
DRIVERS SEAT BELT UNSPOOLS COMPLETELY WHEN DRIVING AND STAYS THAT WAY. DEALER QUOTES JUST UNDER $400 TO REPAIR. HAVE IT REPAIRED AND TWO MONTHS LATER DOES THE SAME THING WHILE STANDING STILL AND PULLING OUT SEAT TO BUCKLE.. AUTO IS NOW UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT WORKING SEATBELT. *TR

THAT MORNING ABOUT 10:30 AM, TRAFFIC WAS SLOWING DURING LIGHT RAINY ROAD CONDITIONS ON INTERSTATE 70, WESTBOUND, IN ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI, WHEN THE DRIVER OF THE CAR IN WHICH I WAS THE ONLY PASSENGER, APPLIED HIS BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND SLID INTO THE BACK OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF US, COLLIDING THE FRONT END OF THE MALIBU INTO THE REAR END OF THE MAZDA SEDAN IN FRONT OF US, TWICE IMPACTING THE MAZDA SEDAN, TOTALING THE CHEVROLET MALIBU IN WHICH I WAS THE PASSENGER. AT NO TIME DID ANY AIR BAGS IN THE MALIBU DEPLOY. I SUFFERED A TORN MENISCUS IN MY LEFT KNEE WHICH REMAINS SCARRED AND PERIODICALLY PAINFUL. THE TWO PASSENGERS IN THE MAZDA MAY HAVE BEEN INJURED, AS WELL. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS REQUIRED BUT NOT AT THE ACCIDENT SCENE. A MISSOURI HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER WAS DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL FAILURES WITH HER VEHICLE SINCE THE DAY IT WAS PURCHASED. THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR DISASSEMBLED WHEN SHE PULLED IT DOWN. THE DEALER REPAIRED THE VISOR, BUT COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. IN SEPTEMBER OF 2007, THE POWER LOCKS FAILED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO BE TRAPPED INSIDE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF ACTIVATING THE REMOTE ENTRY, SHE WAS ABLE TO RELEASE THE LOCKS AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE DOOR DETONATORS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN NOVEMBER OF 2008, WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH IN RAINY CONDITIONS, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS FAILED TO ACTIVATE. THE CONTACT HAD TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER DUE TO LACK OF VISIBILITY AND WAITED FOR THE RAIN TO STOP. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCHED FAILED AND REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. ON DECEMBER 22, 2008, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE CABIN FILTER WAS MISSING. HE FURTHER STATED THAT THE CABIN FILTER WAS NEVER PLACED IN THE VEHICLE FROM THE DATE IT WAS MANUFACTURED. THE COST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WOULD BE $30. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO CURRENT RECALLS REGARDING THE FAILURES THAT SHE WAS EXPERIENCING; HOWEVER, SHE WAS OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND OIL CHANGES FOR UP TO 24,000 MILES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,740.
ON 7/20 MY CHEVROLET MALIBU'S SUNROOF EXPLODED. I FELT IT WAS A FLUKE OR DEFECT. I WAS DRIVING ON I-96 AND ENTERING I-94 DURING THE MORNING HEADING TOWARDS MY GRANDSON'S DAY CAMP. AFTER COMING OUT OF THE OVERPASS ENTRANCE FROM 96 TO 94, WITHIN LESS THAN A 1/4 MILE, I HEARD THIS TREMENDOUSLY LOUD SOUNDS AND GLASS BEGAN TO SHOWER ME AND MY GRANDSON CAUSING MINORS CUTS. I AM GRATEFUL I DID NOT LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I LEASED THIS CAR ON 6/1. IT IS LESS THAN 60 DAYS OLD. RICHARD VOSS FROM JEFFERSON CHEVROLET HAD THE GLASS REMOVED WITHOUT SO MUCH AS INDICATING TO ME THAT HE FELT SOMETHING HIT THE CAR AND WHEREAS I HAD EXPLAINED TO HIM, FROM THE DIRECTION I WAS TRAVELING, THE SPEED OF THE WIND THAT DAY, THE SOUND OF THE EXPLOSION, THE LACK OF HEARING ANY OBJECT HIT THE TOP OF THE CAR PRIOR TO THE ERUPTION, ELIMINATED MY OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A CLAIMS ADJUSTER VIEW THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT. I FEEL THAT MY RIGHTS TO A FAIR DETERMINATION WERE ELIMINATED ALONG WITH THE REMOVAL OF ANY EVIDENCE TO VERIFY EITHER CLAIM AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THIS INCIDENT WAS CAUSED FROM THE PENETRATION OF A FOREIGN OBJECT OR A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. GLASS SHATTERED ALL OVER ME AND MY GRANDSON. WE FORTUNATE TO BE ALIVE. WE ONLY SUFFERED MINOR CUTS AND TENSION. I ONLY HOPE THAT IT IS NOT BECAUSE I LIVE IN THE CITY OF DETROIT THAT THIS CLAIM HAS NOT MERITED FURTHER INVESTIGATION; AS WELL AS A MAJOR DEALER NOT WILLING TO ASSIST IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE BROKEN GLASS FROM THE SUNROOF. *TR
