2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving at an undisclosed speed, several brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact attempted to depress the brake pedal, and the brakes failed to respond as needed. The contact pumped the brake pedal continuously to bring the vehicle to a stop. The vehicle was then driven in LIMP Mode. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was diagnosed with a brake control module failure, which was caused by an incorrect software version that had crashed the module. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,300.

While driving in a parking lot. Barely applying throttle to move straight forward not turning or driving on a rough road the truck completely shut off all screens went blank and I wasn't able to accelerate. I was able to restart the truck, shift into drive and continue but took a few seconds to realize the issue and properly restart the engine. Thankfully this occurred while in a parking lot without anyone behind me but this is a real concern for me now driving on streets/highways with other vehicles around. This truck was purchased brand new has never been off road and has just over 3,100 miles. There were no warning lights before or after this incident.

On XXX, my Chevrolet Silverado experienced a sudden, severe loss of normal braking shortly after I dropped my child off at school. When I attempted to stop at a stop sign, the vehicle would not stop normally. The brake pedal remained firm, but braking effectiveness was drastically reduced and required extreme force. The dashboard simultaneously displayed multiple warnings involving the brake/ABS system, ESC, steering-column lock, and trailer-brake system. OnStar generated a diagnostic/safety report identifying fault/error code P062F. The vehicle then entered a reduced-speed/limp-mode condition. I was extremely fortunate this occurred within approximately one mile of Rick Hendrick Chevrolet of [XXX] and with little traffic around me. I was able to reach the dealership without a collision. Had this occurred at highway speed, the inability to stop normally could have resulted in a fatal crash. The incident also occurred immediately after school drop-off. Had I used the normal car line instead of parking and walking my child inside, this failure could have occurred among stopped vehicles while children were actively exiting them. I immediately brought the vehicle to Rick Hendrick Chevrolet. Despite the seriousness of the event, I do not believe the cause was adequately investigated. To my knowledge, a computer/software update was performed and I was essentially told to “let them know if it happens again.” They also asked what i was towing - nothing.I questioned whether an electrical fault or short could have caused the multiple simultaneous failures, but I am not aware of that possibility being investigated. Because another occurrence could cause serious injury or death, I refused to continue driving the vehicle and traded it in. I have now learned that the same vehicle is being offered for sale again. I am reporting this to NHTSA because I am concerned the underlying safety defect remains unresolved and could represent an early instance of a broader defect. The contact owns a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, there was an abnormally loud pinging sound coming from the engine. The vehicle lost motive power, the brakes and the steering wheel became inoperable. The message "Depress Start" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was initially diagnosed that the battery failure was unsoldered. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While being test-driven by the mechanic, the vehicle stalled. After further investigation, it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to the main bearing failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, opened a case and informed the contact that a case worker, near his location, would contact him in 24 hours. The failure mileage was approximately 9,025.

The contact owns a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the message "Service Brake Assist" was illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the message was reset on several occasions. Additionally, the dealer determined that the failure was possibly due to a low voltage issue, and the vehicle was operating as designed. The contact stated that the failure had recurred. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that a towing agent would towed the vehicle to their location. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 85.

2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Safety Issue Summary: I am filing a complaint regarding critical safety defects with my vehicle. The truck displayed warning messages for traction control service and brake system failure on the instrument panel while parked in my driveway, prior to the vehicle becoming inoperable, I experienced dangerous driving conditions including swerving similar to hydroplaning on two separate occasions. Details: The vehicle was picked up on a flatbed on May 11th, 2026 because it would not start or run. When I drove it before this incident, I experienced the vehicle swerving dangerously similar to hydroplaning on two different occasions 5/1/26 and 5/9/26. Upon inspection, warning messages appeared on the dashboard indicating traction control system service and brake system failure. These are critical safety systems. Chevrolet HE Dealership in Wichita Falls, Texas performed a diagnostic and claimed to find only a dead battery and parasitic draw. They refuse to address the traction control or brake system failures and claim they cannot duplicate the issues. They are pressuring me to accept the vehicle without written confirmation that these safety systems have been repaired. Safety Risk: A vehicle with non-functioning traction control and brake system failures is unsafe to operate. I cannot accept this vehicle until these critical systems are properly diagnosed and repaired.Than you for your help in this matter.

I am writing regarding an ongoing and serious issue with my 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST 2.7L that continues to occur despite multiple visits to the dealership. Recently, as I was leaving my house, I entered my truck and started the vehicle as normal. Immediately after startup, approximately eight warning lights and system failure messages appeared on the dashboard simultaneously. The warnings included the Check Engine Light, ABS warning, Brake System Failure, Service Steering Column Lock, Service Traction Control, Service ESC, Service Brake Pad Monitor, and Trailer Brake Disabled warnings. At that point, the truck became undriveable. Although I was able to shift gears, the vehicle would not move properly in either Drive or Reverse. Due to the severity of the issue, I turned the truck off and left it parked overnight. The following day, all warning lights and messages had disappeared completely. This situation is extremely concerning because the vehicle appears to fail randomly without warning. I no longer feel safe driving the truck, especially with my children in the vehicle, because I fear it could stop functioning again at any time and potentially create a dangerous situation. I have already taken the truck to the dealership multiple times regarding this issue. However, I have repeatedly been told that they cannot properly diagnose or repair the problem unless the warning lights are actively present at the time of inspection. Since the issue is intermittent, this has made it very difficult to get the truck repaired, even though the problem clearly continues to occur. I am requesting that this matter be taken seriously and investigated further, and because this is a new truck that barely has 7,833 miles on it.as this appears to involve critical safety systems including braking, traction control, steering, and vehicle drivability. I depend on this truck daily and need a permanent resolution to this problem as soon as possible.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
