2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I had my truck serviced for the airbag recall in 2021 at Clint Newell auto in Roseburg Oregon, they did not have a necessary part to complete the job at the moment and I had moved out of town by the time they got it in. I just today brought it in and they said they did the second half of the recall but the component was not communicating. I was informed they would charge me to investigate why. I am writing to complain and seek resources. I cant afford to have the airbag problem investigated especially since it is likely their fault/negligence. The airbag light remains on and it is still a danger to me, also they were super rude and disorganized. Please help

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 at an auction. The contact stated that although the odometer indicated 89,671 miles at the time of purchase, there was a mileage discrepancy discovered during the vehicle registration. The title was marked exempt; there was no official documentation verifying the actual mileage. The discrepancy was attributed to an inoperable odometer or due to the condition of the frame of the vehicle.

The tread on the rear passenger’s tire was worn, the sidewalls of another tire were falling apart, and the tread and sidewalls on the other tires were separating. All four tires were replaced. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS MATTER WITH NITTO AND HAVE HAD THE TIRES INSPECTED BY ONE OF THERE DISTRIBUTORS AT THEIR REQUEST. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TIRE SEPARATION THAT IS OCCURRING APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT ACCORDING TO THE INSPECTOR. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIRE FROM THIS SAME MANUFACTURER TO FALL APART AND AT APPROX 18000 MILES WITH THIS SET. IT IS A HUGE CONCERN AS THEY SHOW NO SIGNS OF WEAR OR DEFECT UNTIL THEY ARE ABOUT TO FAIL. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE BECOME AN EXPERT AT FEELING THE IRREGULARITIES WHILE DRIVING AND HAVE NOW STARTED INSPECTING THE TIRES IMMEDIATELY BEFORE MY LIFE IS THREATENED. THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM THAT I WAS HOPING TO GET THE TIRES, I SAVED TWO OF THEM, BACK TO NITTO FOR EXAMINATION. THEY INITIALLY SEEMED VERY INTERESTED AFTER HEARING THE NEWS FROM THEIR INSPECTOR, BUT MY ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT THEM HAVE BEEN IGNORED AND THEY HAVE FAILED TO FOLLOW UP AS PROMISED. I WAS FORCED TO REPLACE ONE TIRE ALREADY DUE TO MY LOCATION AWAY FROM HOME AT TIME OF INCIDENT AND WHILE TRAVELING HOME I FELT THE OTHER TIRE START TO GO AND YES THIS WAS ALSO INSPECTED. I WILL NOW REPLACE ALL OF MY TIRES YET AGAIN (WITH A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER THIS TIME) FOR SIMPLE FEAR OF FAILURE AND INJURY OR DEATH. I FELT AT MINIMUM YOU SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THIS SITUATION IN CASE OTHERS HAVE BEEN INJURED DUE TO THEIR FAULTY PRODUCTS. IT BOTHERS ME GREATLY THAT THEY WOULD NOT WANT TO HAVE THESE RETURNED FOR EVALUATION. I WASN'T REQUESTING ANY WARRANTY OR COMPENSATION, SO IT'S NOT ABOUT MONEY FOR ME.

2008 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500, GAS ENGINE, 34,600 MILES. TRANSMISSION IS HAVING ISSUES THAT DEALER CANNOT SEEM TO FIX. NEW PUMP PUT INTO TRANNIE, STILL HAVING PROBLEMS. USUALLY HAPPENS IN TOW HAUL MODE, HAULING APPROX 5,000 LBS. TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT UP, HOLDS AND REVS TO 3500 OR 4000 RMP'S. I TAKE FOOT OFF GAS AND IT BUMPS INTO GEAR. MOST OFTEN HAPPENS AT 35MPH AND 55 MPH. WHEN SLOWING DOWN TRANSMISSION SLAMS INTO LOWER GEAR AND REVS VERY HIGH. AT 55 MPH ON I-435 IN KCMO DURING RUSH HOUR, TRUCKS TIRES LOCKED UP AND SQUEALED WHEN TRANNIE DOWN SHIFTED. HAS A MAJOR ISSUE BETWEEN 30-40 MPH. AGAIN, SLAMS BETWEEN GEARS THROWING PASSENGERS FORWARD (I DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT HOW IT IS AFFECTING THE HORSES!) WE ARE FIRST AND ONLY OWNER OF TRUCK. TRUCK TREATED VERY WELL, NO OFF-ROADING OR ABUSE. SAD THAT WE ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE..... IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE 35,000 MILES ON IT!!!!! *TR

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LINES 2008 CHEVY SILVERADO WITH ALLISON TRANSMISSION. FACTORY TRANSMISSION LINES LEAK AND MUST BE REPLACED. WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS COLD, THE LINES/CRIMPS HOLDING THE RUBBER HOSE TO THE PIPES FAIL AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID IS LOST, SOMETIMES IN CATASTROPHIC MANNER, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOOSE PROPULSION. REPORTS OF FAILURE ARE EXTREMELY COMMON, AND IT IS NOT UNUSUAL, THAT THE LINES MAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES WITHIN THE 1ST 50,000 MILES. GM HAS ISSUED 'NEW, UPDATED' PARTS, BUT THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL PARTS. THE NEW PART NUMBERS ARE 20759971, 20759972, 20759973. WILE REPAIR IS COVERED ON THE 36K BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY, THERE IS NO COVERAGE ON THE 100K WARRANTY. GM SHOULD REPLACE THE LINES FREE OF CHARGE FOR THE 1ST 100K MILES WITH A HOSE THAT WILL NOT FAIL. CONSUMERS CAN TAKE THE ORIGINAL GM LINE TO A HYDRAULIC SHOP, HAVE THE RUBBER PORTION OF THE LINES REPLACED WITH STANDARD HYDRAULIC HOSE SUITABLE FOR ATF FLUID AND THERE ARE NO FURTHER FAILURES. IF CONSUMERS CAN FIX THE LINES, PERHAPS GM CAN FIND A SOLUTION. *TR

I OWN A 2008 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500, 4WD, DURAMAX WITH ALLISON TRANS . THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL. BETWEEN SPEEDS OF 30-45 MPH, THE CRUISE WILL NOT HOLD THE SPEED STEADY GOING UP A MODEST HILL. RPMS FLUCTUATE 500-800 RPM CAUSING THE SPEED TO SURGE UPWARD AND THEN BACK OFF ONLY TO REPEAT CONTINUOUSLY WHILE GOING UP HILL. HAD IT TO DEALER TWICE WHO SAID IT WAS NORMAL. COMPLAINED TO GM HOTLINE AT 1-800-222-1020 AND WAS GIVEN SVC REQ # 71-806441267. APPROXIMATELY 10 DAYS LATER ON MARCH 2, 2010, A DISTRICT REP CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT GM SAID IT WAS NORMAL AND NOTHING TO BE DONE. I COMPLAINED THAT THIS WAS UNSAFE, THAT I NEVER HAD A VEHICLE THAT HAD A CRUISE THAT DID THIS. HE WAS SYMPATHETIC BUT UNABLE TO RESOLVE PROBLEM. IT MAY NOT BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM IN THAT I HAVE A FRIEND LIVING IN ANOTHER STATE, WHO HAS A CLONE OF MY VEHICLE (BOUGHT FROM SAME DEALER) AND HE STATES THAT HIS TRUCK DOES NOT DO THIS. THIS SITUATION IS UNSAFE AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

BOUGHT 2500 HD CREW CAB SILVERADO, 2008. RESEARCHED KNOWN PROBLEMS ONLINE WITH DOOR ACTUATORS. APPARENTLY THEY BEGIN TO FAIL WITH LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON CERTAIN TRUCKS. I SEE THIS AS A SAFETY HAZARD AND A SECURITY PROBLEM. IN CASE OF A CRASH THE LOCKS ON THE REAR DOORS WILL NOT WORK AND MUST BE UNLOCKED MANUALLY WHICH MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE DEPENDING ON THE DAMAGE, THE MANUAL LOCKS ARE ON THE FARTHEST POINT BACK FROM THE DRIVER WHICH MAKES THEM VERY HARD TO REACH FROM THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK. THEY ALSO DO NOT LOCK WHEN THE KEY FOB OR ELECTRIC LOCK BUTTON IS PUSHED IN THE TRUCK, MUST BE LOCKED MANUALLY. THIS PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY WELL KNOWN AND GM REFUSES TO RECALL THIS ITEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS A CLEAR SAFETY RISK. IF I HAVE A FIRE OR AN ACCIDENT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET MY DAUGHTER OUT OF THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AND GM WOULD BE GETTING ONE HELL OF A LAWSUIT. LIKEWISE IF ANYTHING GETS STOLEN OUT OF MY TRUCK DUE TO THE LOCKS NOT WORKING I WILL ALSO BE STARTING A LAWSUIT AGAINST GM. EVERY MANUFACTURER WANTS TO GET EVER PENNY THEY CAN OUT OF PEOPLE WITHOUT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIRING THE LOWEST BIDDER FOR CRUCIAL PARTS ON THEIR VEHICLES AND THEN REFUSES TO STAND BEHIND THEM. SOME PEOPLE I HAVE TALKED TO HAVE REPLACED THESE DOOR ACTUATORS 4+ TIMES ALL THE WAY AROUND THEIR VEHICLE. UNACCEPTABLE. *TR
