Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I am writing to express my disappointment with the quality and reliability of my vehicle. Since purchasing it, I have had to return it to the dealership on five separate occasions due to ongoing defects and mechanical issues. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, the Super Cruise system failed to function properly and required service. At approximately 15,000 miles, I was informed that the brake pads were already excessively worn and needed replacement, which I believe is premature for a vehicle with such low mileage. Most recently, the check engine light illuminated, requiring another visit to the dealership for diagnosis and repair. These repeated issues have caused significant inconvenience, wasted time, and disrupted my daily life. I purchased this vehicle expecting it to be safe, dependable, and of high quality. Instead, I have experienced recurring problems that have seriously affected my confidence in the vehicle. Given the number of repair visits and the ongoing defects, I respectfully request that General Motors review my case and provide an appropriate resolution. I would appreciate a prompt response and a fair remedy to address these continuing issues. Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

There is a known issue with the software / brake monitoring system with the 2024 Chevy traverse. The brake pad sensor is faulty and the vehicles warning system tells you that your brake pads are critically low when in reality they are not. Even after you change the brakes and put a new sensor you cannot clear the notification. The only way to reset this is to either take it to the dealership for them to change your brakes or pay $200 to obtain the fix for the software. Now this is bricks maintenance meaning as the consumer you should be able to maintain your vehicle on your own but GM has made this impossible which will force the consumer to turn off their brake monitoring system to remove the faulty warning. This is a safety risk for the consumer and the other people on the roads. This update should be done free of charge but they refuse to do it.

I am reporting a serious safety incident involving my 2024 Chevrolet Traverse RS AWD, with approximately 34,378 miles. On or about [XXX], while the vehicle was being driven near Sarasota Florida at approximately 25 mph, it suddenly lost propulsion and all electrical power. The instrument panel, displays and vehicle electrical systems went completely dark. The vehicle was completely dead and would not restart. Police subsequently jump-started it, but the vehicle’s systems did not initially operate normally. This vehicle previously experienced another complete electrical-power failure while parked overnight, and the dealership has a record of that incident. Following the in-motion shutdown, the dealership performed a complete software flash using USB and stated that a software problem may have caused a parasitic battery draw. I understand how a parasitic draw could discharge the battery while the vehicle is parked. However, I have not received an adequate explanation of why the vehicle lost all electrical power while the engine was running and the charging system should have been supplying power. I am requesting that General Motors open a formal product-safety case, review the dealership’s diagnostic and programming records, determine the complete cause of the in-motion shutdown, and provide written confirmation of the tests and repairs performed. Please provide me with the GM case number and escalate the matter for appropriate technical or field review. Vehicle: 2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71 Mileage at first incident: 25,821 My 2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71 experienced multiple safety‑critical electrical and ADAS failures. The vehicle had a Reduced Acceleration / limp‑mode event, accompanied by a strong antifreeze odor inside and outside the vehicle. Dealer diagnostics on 06/29/2026 and 07/16/2026 confirmed several trouble codes affecting the engine, braking system, and collision‑avoidance systems. The following diagnostic trouble codes were recorded: P3705 – Engine Coolant Pump Control Circuit Low (engine cooling fault) C0609 – Park Brake Actuator / Switch Signal Fault (brake system logic fault)-Active 6.29.26 10:12:43AM U160A – Lost Communication With Serial Data Gateway Module (CAN‑bus gateway failure)-Active 6.29.26 10:12:43AM U197A – Lost Communication With Front Radar Sensor Module (forward collision warning / AEB disabled)-Active 6.29.26 10:12:43AM These faults caused loss of radar‑based safety features, including Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The vehicle displayed warnings and temporarily disabled ADAS functions. The Reduced Acceleration event created a hazardous situation in traffic. The dealer attributed the incident to “low coolant,” but the diagnostic codes clearly show electrical and communication failures across multiple safety‑critical modules. The antifreeze odor continues, suggesting a possible coolant leak or unresolved cooling system issue. The vehicle has been inspected by GM technicians, and the codes were documented on both visits but they say car is fine. The safety systems affected include brakes, engine cooling, electrical CAN‑bus communication, and collision‑avoidance radar modules. I am requesting NHTSA to record this complaint and evaluate whether these failures represent a broader safety defect in the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse Z71.

Vehicle driving 32 miles an hour had sudden brake failure. The brakes did not work. Then, the vehicle had the following faults; ESC fault, traction and stability control fault, brake system fault, air conditioning failure (blowing hot air while 92 degrees out), lane assist fault, power steering fault. The vehicle almost slammed into traffic as it could not stop. The vehicle has 14872 miles.

I experienced complete brake failure while coming up to an intersection during rush hour. To avoid crashing into the vehicles in front of me I went off the road onto the shoulder and coasted until I stopped. During this “brake failure” popped up on my dash. (I have a picture) I ended up turning the car off and then starting it back up. Everything appeared to be fine, however I was not fine. I called the dealership right away and brought in. They diagnosed it as needing brake master cylinder and it took about 30 days for the vehicle to get fixed. Now I’m experiencing transmission fluid leaking. The vehicle shudders when accelerating.

My 2024 Traverse was delivered with defective third-row seat headrests that do not return to their normal upright position after being folded, compromising passenger head and neck protection in a collision. On October 28, 2025, the vehicle developed a coolant leak confirmed by the dealer, but repairs have been delayed due to a national parts backorder, creating a risk of engine overheating or sudden breakdown while driving. Additionally, the front brakes began squeaking excessively about one year into my ownership, and the brake pad wear sensor shows only 18% life remaining at 18,454 miles, which raises concerns about reduced braking efficiency and increased stopping distance. All issues have been reported to an authorized dealer and remain unresolved except for the third-row headrests. These conditions pose significant safety risks to occupants and other road users.

NHTSA ID 11703122 · filed Dec 4, 2025

When a lighter driver is operating the vehicle the seat will move and make a clicking noice causing a safety concern when the vehicle accelerates or stops. This happens only when a lighter driver is operating the vehicle with a weight of around 160 lbs. it does not have the same issue with heavier drivers but does cause concern for the safety of the vehicle in the event something were to happen when operating the vehicle. Have taken to dealership twice with no resolution. Those that were testing the safety of the vehicle were larger than the person who normally operates the vehicle experiencing the problem and no resolution was provided after both of the visits to the dealership.

Approximately four weeks ago on 02/03/2026, during rainy conditions, the brakes on the vehicle did not function properly, creating a serious safety concern. At the same time, a hose connected broke and there was a strong burning smell coming from the vehicle. I also noticed fluid leaking from the vehicle. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealership for repair, and the vehicle remained there for approximately five days for inspection, parts, and repair. Additionally, this is now my third time bringing the vehicle in for service. During previous visits, I asked the service department about the condition of my brakes because they were making a squeaking noise and I was concerned about their performance. I was told by the service department that the brakes were fine, that I still had plenty of brake life remaining, and that the squeaking noise was normal. However, as of March 4, 2026, my vehicle displayed a new warning message stating “Service Brake Pad Monitor – Front Brakes.” This is concerning because the vehicle currently has approximately 25,490 miles. Given the previous brake concerns I reported and the dealership’s response that the brakes were normal, the new warning message raises additional concerns about the safety and reliability of the braking system. Because this defect involves the braking system and creates a safety concern, I am requesting that General Motors review my case under the applicable Lemon Law and advise me on the next steps toward either a vehicle replacement or buyback if the issue cannot be fully resolved.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse has super cruise. It is basically an auto drive feature. It has sensors in the top part of the steering wheel. This plastic area is known for cracking and the dealership said there is nothing they can do. This is absurd. They know there is an issue with the wheels cracking and they are not fixing them under the warranty.

I was taking my daughter to school; we were about 5 minutes from our home. I came up to a red light and stopped no problem, it turned green and as I proceeded through the intersection to the next red light to make my left-hand turn to get on the freeway, my rearview mirror camara flickered and that was my first indication that something was wrong. After that the ac started turning on and off and my dash lights all started lighting up. Fortunately, I was only going about 15-20 mph, so I was able to get the car to stop without incident. I had a few seconds to decide what to do, I determined that making a U-turn when the light turned green was the safest option, that's when I realized I had no power steering. I was able to safely get the car back to my driveway and called a tow truck. The car is now at JK Chevrolet Nederland, Tx and now waiting to hear diagnostic.

On the car seat there are two indicators to tell you if the seat is locked in place because it is a rotating car seat. Both indicators never fully go in the “green” meaning the seat is fully locked into place. The car seat is less than two years old and both indicators are malfunctioning, they aren’t going fully in the green. I reached out to the company with pictures and videos and they have done nothing to help. They said from the video it looks like the car seat is functioning properly and they will not fix or replace it.

* What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The breaks continually squeak so loud. They have done this since the first month I had car. The dealership said that they compared it, and it is normal for the car. On paper, they wrote could not replicate, even though they could. It’s so loud and annoying. New car should not sound like this. Tires slide on snow and ice. * How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? In any weather conditions, yes. I have slid on ice many times. I had a near death experience on a snowy morning hiting a slick spot and fish tailing. The tires provided should be better than what they are. Another time last week I drove over melted snow (40 degrees out) must have been ice under, car would not break and I was unable to stop at the stop sign! It skidded through. * Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Break sound has been reproduced and they said they can’t do anything. They documented that they couldn’t reproduce it. That was frustrating. Tires I will share concerns when I return. * Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? * No * Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? * My check engine light has come on at least 3 times. That’s a separate issue with this car. Multiple check engine lights with no known issue to solve at dealership.

Following an overnight snow storm, I completely cleared the vehicle of snow and ice including the windshield and hood while running the vehicle to get it to operating temperature. During my morning commute, snow, slush, and water began accumulating on the windshield and froze to the outer four to six inches on both sides. The wiper edges were clear from the night before, as I had raised them off the windshield. They were able to maintain a clear view in the middle of the windshield. I ran the defroster at full temperature, the "HI" setting, with the fan speed at 6 out of 8. The external temperature was 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Driving speeds varied from 30mph on county roads and 65mph on the interstate. The front defroster vent does not run the full width of the vehicle, so there is no way to apply warm/hot air to the outer edges to keep it from refreezing and maintain full visibility. This creates unsafe driving conditions by narrowing the forward view.
