Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data
Data refreshed
Our database contains 2 NHTSA owner-reported complaints for the 1997 Chevrolet W4, most frequently naming the driver assistance and tires & wheels categories. 15 manufacturer communications are on file.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.
When owners filed reports about this model year
Not enough dated records to plot a meaningful trend — 2 months of data.
Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded
Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.
No recalls in our database for this model year
That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

EVER SENCE THE CITY OF CRESCENT CITY PURCHESED THIS VEHICLE IS HAS NOT RUN PROPERLY. I HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALER, ANOTHER DEALER AND CONTACTED GM SAFETY DIVISION TO NO AVAIL. THE FOLLOWING IS THE PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT SAY 35 MPH I CAN LET OFF THE GAS AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SLOW DOWN AND YOU CAN CONTINUED TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD FOR 20 MILES WITH YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS AND MAINTAIN 35 MPH. WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS THE VEHICLE IS SUPPOST TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP. THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. YOU CAN BE DRIVING AT 30 MPH AND LET OFF THE GAS TO SLOW DOWN, PUT IN THE CLUTCH AND THE ENGING RPM'S WILL INCREASE TO 2000 RPM'S AND STAY THERE UNTIL YOU C OME TO A STOP. THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 30MPH THE ENGING WILL SUDDENLY INCREASE RPM'S AND START TO PICK UP SPEED. THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. WHEN STARTING THE ENGINE AFTER IT IS AT OPERATING TEMP. IT WILL IDLE BETWEEN 1500 AND 2000 RPM'S AND YOU CAN PUT IT IN GEAR AND DRIVE UP AND DOWN HILLS AND ON FLAT ROADS AT 30 MPH WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS. THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER THE THIS IS THE WAY THE TRUCK WAS ENGINEERED AND GM WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. IF I GET INTO A WRECK AND SOMEONE IS INJURED BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY DEFECT THAT I HAVE TRIED TO GET FIXED MY LAWYER WILL HAVE A EASY CASE. PLEASE TRY TO HELP ME AND THE CITY OF CRESCENT CITY WITH THIS POTETIENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE BOTTOM LINE IS WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS THE VEHICLE IS SUPPOST TO SLOW DOWN AND COME TO A STOP ON FLAT LAND. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. LAWRENCE LONGHI

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
