Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
When I started my car I heard a “ding” and saw that my airbag light was on. I called the local dealership to ask about it and they said that in the case of a crash that light usually indicates that there is something wrong with the sensors to the airbags and if I was to get into an accident, they wouldn’t deploy; which could cause loss of life if there is failure to deploy. My vehicle also revs and has more get up and go (when I’m not intentionally accelerating) sometimes when I’m driving which is abnormal and can cause an accident.
The vehicle will be started and running and shut off. Driving down the road and all of the electrical shuts off, stops running and no gages work. You have to put the vehicle in N and restart. This is extremely dangerous as you never know when it will happen. driving down the interstate at 80mph or driving when you can't just pull over to get started again. Failure in the ignition is what we think. There is an active recall but not for our VIN 2013 Chrysler Town & Country vehicles may stall or shut off while driving due to a known recall regarding a faulty Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module, which can allow the key to move from the "run" to "accessory" or "off" position.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving at highway speed, 65mph, the 2013 Town and Country shut down. The dash instruments and all internal lighting shut off, the radio shut off and the blower fan for heat shut off. I lost the ability to steer and brake (power steering went out) but managed to maneuver the vehicle to the right lane. The car would not respond to any acceleration attempt. I tried turning the key while coasting down the highway, the vehicle did not restart. I then put the vehicle into neutral and tried turning the key and it did not restart. I then turned the key to the off position and then tried to restart and it successfully started. My dash instruments illuminated, the radio and heat blower came back on and I was able to regain control of the vehicle.
The van has stopped running on the highway without warning 3 times creating a very serious problem, had to be towed to get home, dealer could find nothing wrong.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I found the headrest exploded on the driver side when I got in the car in the morning. Apparently, this is common as I found it on the Internet while looking for a solution. Looks like a plastic part inside the headrest broke. AHR system inadvertently activated it seems. I’m glad I wasn’t in the car and it didn’t hit my head.
The Battery died and would not recharge. I checked the van. No lights were left on; no warning notifications. I replaced the battery. I had the seat behind the driver seat stowed because I had surgery on my left foot and needed to haul my knee cart with me. I no longer needed it so I raised the seat and found it had melted/burnt in several spots on the seat back. I was mortified! My van is a 2013 but is in great shape and only has 46,937 miles on it. It was parked in my garage and could have caused a house fire killing all occupants. I contacted Chrysler. They won't assist in the repair or replacement stating it hadn't been recalled and was no longer in warranty. Insurance denied the claim due to it being a part malfunction. Please let others know that the seat heater & wiring harness are defective!! I feel Chrysler should accept the responsibility pay for the repairs due to defective parts. Had this fire continued, they would be facing a much larger lawsuit such as wrongful death, etc.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
The contact owns a 2013 Chrysler Town And Country. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 55 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to restart. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the ignition switch. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V373000 (Electrical System, Air Bags); but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 98,000.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim

I experienced a no start situation. The vehicle would crank but not start. I did some research on the internet and found other Dodge/Chrysler vehicles with the same problem. I noticed they all had a similar, if not the same TIPM fusebox. The remedy was the same. You can put a bypass jumper wire on the fuse and the car will start. The problem is a fuel relay failure that is soldered to a circuit board inside the TIPM. There are after- market remedies. I don’t know if these remedies protect in the event of a crash, severed fuel line, and fire. Some Dodge/Chrysler models have a recall on this issue. This recall should be extended to my vehicle and many more. This is not my vehicle. I do some of the service of this vehicle.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. Transmission codes but not having transmission issues even verified by shop and couldn't find issue. Then out of no where transmission revved hard on its own causing it to almost red line.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

The WIN module in the listed vehicle has failed and is being replaced. This is the same type of WIN module that was contained in a recall for 2008-2010 models and should be updated to include the models beyond 2010. The problem has been random for a couple of years, but recently we have had constant issues with the vehicle shutting off while driving, leaving no power for steering or braking. The entire vehicle shuts off randomly, including WHILE DRIVING and is dangerous for anyone who owns this model vehicle. I am surprised and disappointed that newer models (same base design) are experiencing the same issue and nothing has been done. The following websites address the issue with model years similar to mine. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Included with this complaint is the repair estimate for my vehicle ($2057.38 for the replacement WIN module and programming). I have also included the NHTSA recall specific to this problem on 2009-2010 models, which have the same components as mine. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The rear drivers side sliding door no longer functions. The issue began when the door would intermittently make a buzzing sound but would not open or close. Shortly after, the door continued the first issue but also began pulsating when it actually would open. Around the same time these issues began, the door started opening by itself while driving. Though i have not had any accidents yet, several near misses have occurred due to the confusion and stress that this generates. The opening while driving issue occurs most often when on the highway. The primary passengers in the rear are children so there is heightened risk based on their very appropriate age based reaction of panic. The door is also no longer opening electronically from the key fob nor from the front seat buttons.
The contact owns a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was flashing. Additionally, the Auto Start feature was inoperable. The contact also stated that the heater was activated independently. While driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the hood latch had been seized, and the electrical system was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the dealer declined to service the vehicle and referred the contact to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Consistent failure of the "Total Integrated Power Module" which controls so many items in the car such as windshield wipers, windshield defroster fan, exterior lighting systems, heater fan, the ability for the car to start, the horn may or may not sound and many other accessory related items. It is a very WELL KNOWN failure of these modules and they are basically un available blamed on the supply chain problems. As a result of these problems in this very well known module failure cars have become basically un-able to drive safely or not at all and sit in dealers service areas waiting for these modules to be replaced at the owners cost in most cases in excess of $1,000.00 for a part that is a known failure in design by Chrysler Corporation and their various owners (Mercedes Benz, Fiat, Stellantis) and others unknown at this time. This is against the Consumer Product Safety Commission as well as the National Highway Transportation Safety Commission to have so many defective modules that create unsafe conditions for the vehicle owners where they are concerned about their own safety as well as the safety of those they share the roads and highways with. I am along with many others asking you to look into this situation and find some kind of remedy to correct this ongoing problem for consumers and the safe operation of the vehicles that they operate on the roads of America as well as foreign countries.
TAKATA RECALL: THE HEATER RUNS ONE DAY AND STOP THE NEXT DAY AND THE AC ALSO WHEN THE WEATHER COLD THE WINDSHIELD WILL BECOME FOGGY, AND IT IS HARD TO KEEP DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE ACCIDENT. THE TRANSMISSION SENSOR LIGHT KEEP COMING ON AND OFF ON CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
My Chrysler Town and Country has serious electrical issues. It started with the radio shutting off and restarting by itself, which is not a serious issue at all. But yesterday, at a red light, the radio shut off and so did the car. The engine stopped working, the accelerator pedal would not respond. It was terrifying. Thankfully we were at a red light, but if this were to happen on a busy highway, or even just on a regular street with traffic, it could be a life threatening situation. From what I have researched online, this is a common problem with Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge cars. Legal action has been taken and class action lawsuits were filed to address this matter. The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) asked this very own NHTSA to open an investigation into faulty TIPM, which seem to be the problem that causes these cars to very dangerously completely shut off even while driving, causing drivers to lose control of the steering and of the brakes. The CAS estimated 7 million Chrysler vehicles have power issues related to the TIPM. One month after receiving a class action lawsuit, Chrysler issued a recall for 189.000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee with bad TIPMS. 189.000. Out of SEVEN MILLION. This is absurd. It seems as if Chrysler is waiting for someone to be killed due to this issue so they can take it seriously and actually issue the recall to all the cars that have this problem, not a tiny fraction of them and not only because it is directly related to a lawsuit. Unfortunately, despite multiple claims throughout the years that not only this is a common problem with Chrysler, but that the corporation is well aware of it and negligently refuses to address the issues, the NHTSA rejected the CAS petition to investigate this problem. Proof is definitely not amiss, as a quick internet research will produce thousands upon thousands of reports of the same problem on the same car. This needs to be a recall URGENTLY, and not only after someone dies.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE HESITATED BEFORE AGGRESSIVELY RESPONDING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO LESTER GLENN CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM FIAT (1199 NJ-37 W, TOMS RIVER, NJ 08755; (732) 481-2586) WHO WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT STATED LEARNED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE FUEL PUMP RELAY AND THE TIPM. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Right headlight stopped working, tried replacing bulb, but still did not work. One year before Bettenhausen Chrysler had replaced bulb in April 2021. July 20, 2022, I took the car in to Bettenhausen and they fixed the light, but wanted to charge almost $2,000. I had a Mopar 10% off coupon, which brought the cost to nearly $1,700 that I had to pay. Having working headlights is a legal & safety requirement after dawn and during rain, otherwise a driver can be ticketed. Headlights have been on cars for over 100 years, have not had this kind of problem and expense. Chrysler designed the headlight operation so technically complicated and epensive that defies logic. My vehicle only has about 70,000 miles on it. This is a failure of Chrysler, and I should get a full reimbursement. I have been loyal to this brand since 1981, having bought at least 13 new top of the line vehicles, they need to be loyal to me. I have contacted their customer complaint department, but have not heard from them yet. I sent them the dealer work order and a copy of my paid receipt. Headlights not working are a real safety concern, and I had no choice but to get the repair. My case number is 83729232 with Chrysler. Even the dealer service workers thought the cost is rediculous, and I think it outrageous! I need an advocate to get a full reimbursement!
FOR THE THIRD TIME THE VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, LOSING ALL POWER STEERING CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE. THE AUTOMATIC LIGHTS HAVE ALSO SHUT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES AT NIGHT WHILE NEAR AND PASSING OTHER CARS. WE HAVE ALMOST BEEN STRUCK DUE TO THESE CONDITIONS.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated that while stopped, the child sitting in the second row hugged his sibling, who was sitting in the front seat, and the front passenger’s seat headrest deployed. The contact was unable to push the headrest back down. The headrest struck the child on the face; however, no injuries were sustained. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that an unknown plastic item had detached from the head restraint. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 132,168.
WHILE DRIVING ON I-70 IN COLORADO MY DRIVER SIDE HEADREST AIRBAG DEPLOYED IN MY 2013 TOWN & COUNTRY MINI-VAN. THERE WAS NOTHING HAPPENING, WE DID NOT HIT ANYTHING, THERE WERE NO BUMPS OR REASONS FOR IT TO DEPLOY. IT STRUCK ME HARD IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD CAUSING WHIPLASH. WE PULLED OVER AND THE HEAD REST LOCKING PIN AND COME OUT OF THE INSIDE OF THE HEADREST. THE REASON WAS THE PLASTIC HOOKS HOLDING IT HAD BROKEN. WE PULLED IT TOGETHER AND WRAPPED IT WITH A STRAP.*DT*JB

I had bought 2 graco nautilus snuglock 3-in-1 harness booster and I have used only one and had one in another car for my parents and the one I was using I had bought in Feb of this year and I went to take it out of the car to clean it and when I took the headrest off the Styrofoam also came off. I have contacted graco and they said it's ok to use but for me I feel it's unsafe as my child has autism and she has cancer. I do have pictures if you want to see them
The contact owned a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, his wife alerted him that there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The contact was able to drive to his residence and safely exited the vehicle with his wife and their four children. No injuries were sustained and no medical attention was received. No police or fire department reports were filed. The contact opened the hood and saw that it had caught fire. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. The vehicle remained at the contact's residence and was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Prior to the failure, the contact stated that there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The vehicle then stalled and was not able to restart immediately. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was fluid leaking from the oil filter housing. The failure mileage was 156,058.

Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

FRONT STRUTS ARE NOISY AND MECHANIC SAYS THE RUBBER TOP PLATES ARE DESTROYED. THEY ARE ONLY 4 YEARS OLD AND CAR ONLY HAS 20,200 MILES ON IT. I FEEL THIS IS A PART PROBLEM FROM THE VENDOR SINCE NEW, AS NEWLY PURCHASED STRUTS FROM MONROE HAVE A LIFETIME REPLACEMENT WARRANTY. WITH THE MILEAGE ON THE T&C BEING SO LOW, AND CHRYSLER'S WARRANTY NOT EXCEEDING 3YRS/36,000MILES THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. THE CAR SITS IN THE SHADE BECAUSE OF TREE COVER, SO HEAT SHOULD NOT BE THE ISSUE. IT IS USED AS A LOCAL SEDAN WOULD NORMALLY BE USED WITH VERY LIMITED USAGE. THE WARRANTY SERVICE WAS PULLED BY CHRYSLER BUT THEY NEVER DETECTED THIS ISSUE. I AM A VIETNAM VET WITH HEARING ISSUES, HOWEVER THE FRONT END NOISE HAS INCREASED UNTIL I TOOK IT TODAY TO A MECHANIC. 1-2-18. TWO STRUTS HAVE BEEN QUOTED AT $800.
WHEN I DRIVE OVER ANY TYPE OF MODERATE OR ROUGH TERRAIN, MY CAR RATTLES OR MAKES A SOUND SIMILAR TO POPPING POPCORN.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
WE PURCHASED NEW TIRES FOR THE FRONT OF OUR 2013 CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY ON 9/29/17 FROM TIRES PLUS IN STILLWATER, MN. ON 10/10/17, JUST 11 DAYS LATER, WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH ON A SMOOTH, CLEAR HIGHWAY, THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE BLEW UP, CAUSING A HORRIFIC CRASH. THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION, THE CAR VEERED OUT OF CONTROL, MY HUSBAND FOUGHT THE WHEEL AS IT SKIDDED ALONG THE GRAVEL VERGE. WE WERE ON 2 WHEELS, ABOUT TO FLIP, WHEN WE HIT A PAVED DRIVEWAY, WHICH SWUNG THE VAN AROUND FULL FORCE DOWN A DITCH INTO A PINE GROVE. AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, WE SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES (ALTHOUGH IT TURNS OUT THEY AREN'T SO MINOR AFTER ALL) THANKS TO SAFETY CONSTRUCTION IN THE CAR AND OUR SEAT BELTS. THE VAN WAS TOTALED. WITNESSES, THE SHERIFF, THE WRECKER DRIVERS (IT TOOK 2), AND (LATER) OUR MECHANIC AGREED THAT THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE HAD SEPARATED FROM THE RIM SUDDENLY, (HENCE THE EXPLOSION SOUND) AND WAS CLEARLY THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. WE WERE 200 MILES FROM HOME AND NEEDED A HOTEL, HOSPITAL VISITS, AND A NEW CAR. RESIDUAL INJURIES ARE MINOR BUT IMPAIR OUR DAILY LIVES: WRENCHED SHOULDERS, PERSISTENT BRUISING, PTSD, AND THE TIME AND COST OF BORROWING MONEY TO GET A REPLACEMENT CAR. ATTORNEYS AREN'T INTERESTED IN THE CASE BECAUSE OUR INJURIES AREN'T PROFITABLE ENOUGH FOR THEM, BUT THIS IS A SITUATION WHERE THE PRODUCT FAILED, AND OUR LIVES THREATENED. IF WE HADN'T HIT THAT DRIVEWAY, OR SEAT BELTS AND STRUCTURAL PROTECTIONS, WE'D HAVE ROLLED AND DIED. THE TIRE WAS CLEARLY THE CAUSE. THE TIRE WAS A FIRESTONE DESTINATION LE2 P-METRIC BL 225/65R17 102 BRAND NEW (ABOUT 300 MILES ON THE TIRE) DOT# W22YDE40617
