2010 Dodge Journey Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Dodge Journey, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

It all started with no starts and had starter replaced and then charging problem had new battery and alternator replaced . Then driving to work all the dashboard lights lit up like a Christmas tree and died a couple of times once in the middle of the road . Even when the car was in park and key out of the ignition the lights on dashboard would light up , like the car never totally shut off?Replaced ecm afterwards thinking that was the problem but wasn’t the case (I still have the original ecm unit ) and still there was a battery drain , driving it and the lights lit up the dashboard and stalled out . You can here a buzzing sound after the car if off and key is removed ?

I have been stranded in this vehicle to many times to count. Mostly I had to get a jump to get it back home or keep it running until I returned home. Within the last 30 days I have installed a new alternator and starter. Walmart has installed 4 new batteries due to it being under warranty. So as of today I can't start my car. All the interior lights come on and radio but won't turn over. I tried to get a jump 3 times but still nothing. I am disabled and can't get on public transportation or barely walk up stairs. I'm at zero income and awaiting approval from SSI. So I need someone to assist with this nightmare please. I honestly don't know what else to do

WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES AN HOUR ON A TURNING ROAD ONTO A HIGHWAY AND VEHICLE SHUT OFF. LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND BRAKES WERE HARD. HAD TO IMMEDIATELY GET OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO AVOID TRAFFIC COMING FROM THE REAR AS I LOST LIGHTS AS WELL AND MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SEEN AS IT WAS DARK AND THE VEHICLE IS BLACK. WHEN PULLED OVER I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART. AFTER THE 2ND TIME TURNING THE KEY IT STARTED. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ARE PRESENT ON THE CAR OTHER THAN A TPMS SENSOR.

There is a lighting bolt that repeatedly pops up on dashboard and the car cuts off immediately in mid drive !! I have been to the dealership spent $3200 plus and it just keeps coming back on . Also all the lights flicker on and off while driving or when you hit the turning signals this is ridiculous!! It’s 2022, these issues should had been recalled !!! This is horrible and unsafe especially when driving with children!

NHTSA ID 11460218 · filed Apr 8, 2022

Vehicle loses power while driving. Sometimes it will not start being stranded with kids as this vehicle was produced as a family car. Had battery, alternator, starter replaced. Have read numerous reports from google about vehicle not starting due to safety security features, problems with the fuse box, needing a yellow wire grounded that is located under the hood, and so on. If this is a know issue with these vehicles for over 10yrs why has it not been recalled to be fixed. As I drive the vehicle on the freeway with MY KIDS in it endaragering our lives and the many others who are on the road with me and the countless other dodge journey drivers. FIX THIS ISSUE. MAKE DODGE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR MISTAKE AS THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID.

I was sitting, idling in my car when my active headrest restrain system in my passenger seat suddenly went off. I am lucky no one was in my passenger seat and that I wasn't driving at that time. I looked more into it and it looks like the plastic encasing the metal bar which holds the headrest together snapped. Googling online I saw that this is a common issue with dodge, jeep, and Chrysler cars. I am now worried my driver side active headrest restraint system could go off while I am driving and cause an accident, as the passenger one definitely flew forward fast when it snapped.

NHTSA ID 11684112 · filed Aug 30, 2025

My active headrests on the front seats have suddenly sprung, i.e. they have opened up. The car was parked in my yard, no other vehicles around, no accident/fender bender. I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?

OEM TPMS SENSOR VALVE STEM CRACKED AND BROKE, INSTANTLY DEFLATING TIRE. MATERIAL APPEARS TO BE MANUFACTURED FROM ALUMINUM AND SHOWS SIGNS OF CORROSION APPROX 1/4" BELOW TOP OF FILL HEAD. IF VEHICLE WAS IN HIGH SPEED MOTION AT TIME OF FAILURE, THEN INSTANT TIRE DEFLATION WOULD HAVE OCCURRED AND LEAD TO A POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTROL AND TIRE DAMAGE. A WEB SEARCH FOR SIMILAR ISSUE YIELDS A FEW LEGAL SITES THAT ARE INVESTIGATING ISSUE FOR THE 2009-2010 MODEL YEARS AS LATER MODELS WERE INSTALLED WITH RUBBER STEM.

DODGE JOURNEY BRAKE SYSTEM IS UNDERSIZED FOR VEHICLE SIZE AND WEIGHT. BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS ARE NEEDING FULL CHANGEOUT AFTER APPROX 25K MILES. VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 60K MILES ON ODOMETER, AND BRAKE SYSTEM AGAIN MUST BE REPAIRED PREMATURELY. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE REASON DODGE INCREASED THE ROTOR SIZE ON 2011 MODELS.

ON OUR WAY TO THE COAST MY HEADLIGHT WENT OUT COMPLETELY AND HAD TO USE ONLY TO DAY LIGHTS AND FOG LIGHT NO HEADLIGHT WOULD COME ON THEY WOULD ONLY FLICKER. I WAS STILL A HOUR FROM THE COAST AND 3 HOURS FROM HOME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THE HORN GOES OFF RANDOMLY AND IS ANNOYING SAME WITH THE WIND SHIELD WIPERS. THEY GO AT RANDOM AND ARE NOT NEEDED.THE HORN IS WHEN I AM STATIONARY. THE WIPERS GO AT ANYTIME MOVING OR STOPPED. THE CAR ACTS POSSESSED. FIRST MAJOR PROBLEM IS CAR STARTS WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT, HAD TO REPLACE STARTER ($520) IN THE FIRST WEEK THAT I OWNED THE VEHICLE AFTER GETTING A JUMP SEVERAL TIMES I PURCHASED I JUMP KIT ($125)IN CASE IT WOULDNT START AND THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS AROUND THEN THE JUMP KIT WOULDNT EVEN WORK. SO I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED ($130) AND THE STARTER REPLACED. IF I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TRY TO START IT AGAIN 10 MINS LATER IT WONT START BUT IF YOU WAIT ABOUT AN HOUR, IT WILL START. THIS STILL HAPPENS AFTER HAVING THE STARTER REPLACED SO I HAVE TO KEEP THE CAR RUNNING OR RISK BEING STRANDED FOR AN HOUR OR SO. SECOND PROBLEM, ABOUT A MONTH AFTER BUYING THE VEHICLE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND WAS USING THE CRUISE CONTROL, WAS GOING DOWN A HILL AND THE RPMS WENT ALL THE WAY UP INTO THE RED AND HIGH AS IT COULD THEN WENT DOWN TO ZERO AND THE ENGINE COMPLETLY STALLED WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. SINCE THEN I HAVEN'T USED THE CRUISE CONTROL. THIRDLY, THE PASSANGER SIDE HAS ZERO HEAT. THE DEFROSTER, THE HEAT VENTS ON THE DASH AND THE HEAT VENTS AT THE FEET ALL BLOW OUT COLD AIR. FOURTH PROBLEM, THE HORN WOULD HONK RANDOMLY, WHILE DRIVING OR PARKED. 5TH PROBLEM THE KEY FOB DOES WHAT IT WANTS WHEN IT WANTS. CAME OUT OF THE MALL AND MY ALARM WAS GOING OFF (JUST THE LIGHTS I HAD TO REMOVE THE HORN FUSES BECAUSE OF THE HONKING ISSUE) AND COULD NOT TURN THE ALARM OFF OR UNLOCK THE DOORS WITH THE FOB, HAD TO USE THE ACTUAL KEY FROM INSIDE THE FOB TO GET IN THE CAR AND THEN START IT, SHUT IF OFF THEN I WAS ABLE TO SHUT OFF THE ALARM. 6TH PROBLEM THE CAR WILL RANDOMLY UNLOCK WHEN I'M NOT EVEN HOLDING THE KEY FOB AND THE FRONT WINDOWS WILL ROLL DOWN HALF WAY. THIS CAR HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT IT DODGE NEEDS TO HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE THERE ARE SO MANY SAFETY ISSUES! BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE I WANTED A SAFE VEHICLE FOR MY FAMILY AND THIS CAR HAD BEEN ANYTHING BUT!

DEC. 29TH 2010. I HAVE A 2010 DODGE JOURNEY R/T. IT IS NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD. IT HAS TAKEN ME SEVERAL TIMES TO TURN THE CAR ON EACH TIME I GET IN THE CAR. IT STALLS WHILE I AM DRIVING. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH AND NAV FLASH ON AND OFF FOR SOME CRAZY REASON. THE ALIGNMENT IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN OFF. THE CAR MOVES TOWARD THE RIGHT. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES WHEN I SLOW DOWN. NOW THE BRAKES ARE MAKING NOISES. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO DEALERSHIPS TO BE SERVICED NUMEROUS TIMES AND THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT HAS LEFT MY CAR ON EMPTY(THE GAS) AFTER IT HAS BEEN SERVICED. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED DODGE(THAT IS WHAT THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID) OVER A MONTH AGO, AND STATED THAT THEY WERE WAITING ON A PART TO PUT A DEVICE ON MY CAR TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG. I HAVE CALLED TWICE AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT & THEY WILL NOT CALL ME BACK. SO I GUESS I HAVE TO DRIVE AROUND A CAR THAT IS DANGEROUS AND DODGE IS DOING NOTHING. I DO NOT ACCEPT THIS!!!! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. IF THE SERVICE DEPT. WON'T CALL ME WHAT AM I TO DO. AND THE WARNING SCREEN FOR THE NAV. DOESN'T COME UP WHEN I TURN THE CAR ON. SO I GUESS DODGE CAN RISK THAT LIABILITY TOO. I GUESS IT WILL TAKE SOMEONE BEING INJURED TO GET THEIR ATTENTION. *TR
