Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

WE OWN A 2004 FORD FREESTAR WITH APPROXIMATELY 80,000MILES. ON JULY 18TH WE EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER WORKING PROPERLY. ON JULY 19TH THE CAR STRUGGLED TO GO UP HILL. ON JULY 20TH WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BOB DAVIDSON FORD DEALERSHIP 1845 JOPPA RD IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 21234 888-211-0807 ON JULY 21ST WE WERE INFORMED THAT OUR TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $3,000 IN ADDITION TO REPAIR FOR THE AIR CONDITIONING AT A COST OVER $1,000 WITH A MORE RECENT RESPONSE FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE TOTAL REPAIR WAS NOW LISTED AT APPROXIMATELY $5,400.00 OR MORE. WE ARE SHOCKED TO SAY THE LEAST THAT OUR FREESTAR THAT IS BARELY 4YEARS OLD AND EVEN HAVE PURCHASED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY UP TO 60,000MILES OR FIVE YEARS "WHICHEVER CAME FIRST" AS I WAS REMINDED BY THE REPAIRSHOP REPRESENTATIVE, THAT THIS VEHICLE SHOULD NEED THIS TYPE OF REPAIR AT SUCH AN EARLY STAGE IN THE VEHICLE'S OWNERSHIP. THE COST MADE US SUSPECT AND WE SEARCHED ON LINE THROUGH CONSUMER REPORTS AND FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH SIMILAR STORIES LIKE OUR OWN. AT THIS TIME WHEN ENERGY COSTS ARE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH AND WE HAVE A SON ABOUT TO ATTEND COLLEGE THIS ADDITIONAL OUTLAY OF CONSIDERABLE MONETARY FUNDS SEEMS COMPLETELY ABOVE WHAT IS REASONABLE. WE ARE STILL AWAITING A FINAL COST REPORT FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP, BUT WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE REGISTERED A FORMAL COMPLAINT AS WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THE 2004 FORD FREESTAR WILL BE RECALLED. IN ADDITION TO THIS CURRENT PROBLEM WE HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE BREAKS AND ENCOUNTERED ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE SLIDING DOOR LOCKS. ANY INFORMATION YOU HAVE REGARDING THIS COMPLAINT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE. *TR

The Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual has been revised for diagnosing electronic throttle bodies (ETBs). The ETC_ACT and ETC_DSD PIDs should not used to diagnose possible ETB concerns. The IDS has a limited refresh rate when reading these PIDs and cannot display quickly enough to validate a concern. The PCM automatically monitors these inputs more accurately and will set diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) when appropriate. Using these PIDs for diagnostics will lead to inaccurate results and improper ETB replacements. If a concern is intermittent and no DTCs are present, refer to historical DTCs and the PC/ED, Section 3 No DTCs Present Index chart for further information.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
