•Torque converter failure diagnosed by dealership available for inspection until scheduled repair work. •In danger of complete failure; could cause highway accident if sudden failure or personal danger if broken down along roadways. •Only inspected by dealership service dept. •No indicator lights or warning lamps. I did notice RPM gauge needle jumping slightly several weeks before shudder was felt physically.
Experienced a shudder when accelerating from a stop, increasing in intensity as time went on. There was no warning lamp or any other indication from the vehicle system that there was a problem. After a few weeks of increasing concerns, I brought the car in to my Ford Dealer for diagnostics. Ford Dealer confirmed this was due to a failing torque converter, which is very common in this vehicle, and a Technical Service Bulletin had just been issued for this. I was advised not to drive it, as it would eventually cause severe damage to the transmission. Additionally, continued driving could lead to sudden acceleration loss, engine stalling in traffic, and dangerous transmission overheating which are serious safety concerns for myself and drivers around me. I contacted Ford for financial assistance with this repair because they were fully aware of this common problem with their vehicles, and my car was just out of warranty. Ford offered to pay 40% of the repair, but I still ended up paying over $4,000 out of pocket to repair an issue that was a result of their faulty factory product that should have been part of a mass recall. It took 7 long weeks for this repair to be completed due to low availability of several parts that were on back-order.
Replaced transmission in April 2025. On 9/14 error messages displayed powertrain failure. 9/15 car would not reverse. At shop pending diagnostic
Transmission failure, specially torque converter. It's my primary vehicle and my children and I are at risk daily due to delay in the system when accelerating and shuddering. You can't accelerate quickly because the car can't keep up. There is the chance of complete failure while driving putting others and myself at risk of an accident. Due to overheating elements an engine fire is also a valid concern. Other components have started to go bad on the vehicle after this. Problem was reproduced with a service agent at the dealer. The dealer scheduled an in depth transmission study. It found a failing torque converter. The dealer and service team have inspected it and determined it needed replaced. PARTS ARE BACK ORDERED DUE TO THE INFLUX OF THIS BEING A KNOWN ISSUE CAUSING SAFETY ISSUES FOR MANY EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLES INCLUDING MYSELF BECAUSE IT'S MY PRIMARY VEHICLE. Today is September 16, it was diagnosed and parts ordered September 8. Parts may not even be available until October 5, that's if they are no longer back ordered. That doesn't include the time it takes the dealer to get your repairs scheduled. Best case scenario it's fixed before winter. Worst case it leaves our family hurt, stranded, or with other compiling issues. No warning for this issue.
Torque converter began to fail around 50k miles. Took to Ford for service under TSB last July at around 60k miles, but performance has steadily deteriorated to present, around 80k miles, while waiting for service parts. Issue has expanded to cause violent engine surging, which I worry will increase the risk of a crash. Ford quoted $11k to replace the torque converter, a part they acknowledge is faulty.
-took my vehicle into the dealership after it left my wife and kids stranded in the middle of the highway. Codes came up as a transmission problem. Took it to the dealership and they said it needs a whole new transmission. Car only has 115k miles. Transmission fluid has been replaced 2 times. Dealer has confirmed and diagnosed the issues.
accelerated from a stop sign and engine cut out, leaving me stopped dead in the middle of the street, the engine would not restart after 4 tries, I let it sit, I googled the incident, and was told to let car sit for a minute and try to restart. I let it sit for a minute and it restarted like nothing happened. Google said there was a sensor fault because of an error temperature reading in the crank position sensor, so the car shut down to protect the engine. I think this could have been a dangerous situation, if there had been traffic. the temperature gauge read normal.
The engine failed in 2024, leaving me stalled on the side of a major highway. More recently, in August 2026, my vehicle began experiencing problems shifting into reverse. A warning message stating, “Selected Gear will engage at low speed,” would appear. I contacted my local Ford dealership, and they stated that the transmission fluid was in poor condition, although they were unable to reproduce the specific shifting issue I was experiencing at that time. On September 3, 2026, while driving to work, my vehicle began losing transmission pressure and was unable to accelerate while I was traveling on the main highway. I contacted my local Ford dealership again, and I was informed that the transmission pump was failing. The vehicle and transmission components are available for inspection upon request. My safety, my child's safety, and the safety of other drivers on the highway were put at risk. While traveling on a major highway, my vehicle suddenly lost the ability to accelerate. A complete loss of power or the vehicle stalling in traffic could have resulted in a serious accident, particularly with vehicles traveling behind me at highway speeds. Yes. My local Ford dealership has confirmed that the transmission pump is failing. The vehicle has been inspected/diagnosed by my local Ford dealership. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. Yes. The vehicle has experienced ongoing issues for approximately the past two years. I have repeatedly attempted to have the problems diagnosed and repaired. I was previously told that the issues were related to the turbo/engine boost system. My 2019-2021 Ford Edge, equipped with the 8F35 8-speed automatic transmission, is experiencing severe transmission shuddering, harsh shifting, and jerking symptoms consistent with premature torque converter and internal mechanical failure. I had to pay $800 out-of-pocket for dealership diagnostics and a transmission fluid flush to address these severe driveability issues. Despite the flush, the vehicle continues to shift poorly, presenting an unpredictable driving hazard during acceleration and highway merging. Ford corporate has acknowledged the systemic nature of this transmission defect by negotiating a potential 100,000-mile extended warranty with me. However, a software update or a fluid flush does not remedy the underlying hardware failure of the torque converter. I am filing this complaint to urge the NHTSA to open a formal safety investigation into the 8F35 transmission defect, as it poses a sudden loss of acceleration risk on public roadways.

Took into a Ford dealership for running sluggish at low speed. Sensor and torque converter were bad.
The car shudders and jerks when in certain gears and mph. The transmission is failing I was told by the Ford Dealer, Steven’s Ford and that the transmission should be rebuilt and torque converters need to be repaired. The car has 37,000 miles only. I have an invoice from Steven’s Ford for a diagnostic check up on the car but not repairs.
Was to be paid off in September and give our family some financial relief ,but the very end of July the transmission went in this car is what ford told me. They forgot to mention that the motor was about to go as well. We paid 60,000 in payments. To get screwed over by my local Ford! We had just left Canada wonderland on the 400 series in Canada. My car completely died. We were able to coast to side of the road. Tried to start it but it would only go a tiny bit not enough to get us home so there we are stranded on the side of the highway, because Ford didn't want to admit that the edge was a complete flop. We bought this brand new. It's a catastrophic failure they know this. Toyota offered us 800.00 😂 😂. I did sell it privately and was told that the motor was gone in it as well. Good job Ford get me to be in for each problem
At low speed, the transmission does not shift smoothly. Upon further acceleration past 40 mph, it continues to operate in normal fashion
The vehicle has experienced transmission issues. I received a powertrain malfunction light in August, and the car suddenly had trouble shifting in low gears resulting in jerking. When driving, it continued to have issues. Then, it wouldn't go into reverse and the jerking increased before having it towed to get evaluated. There were no signs and it appears that MANY of these transmissions are reported to have issues.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned: Transmission - Torque Converter and associated parts. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Propulsion and control of gear shifting can come/go cause shuddering - especially between 20mph and 40mph. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Just the dealer mechanics. There is a TSB and Ford knows there are issues with this system. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Shudder at low speed gear. Changes
approx 102K miles, issues started May 2026, torque converter shudder, most noticeable at below speeds 60 mph, no dtc's present, traceable shudder event with ids/fdrs reading, sometimes perceived/felt as an engine misfire may be due to an internal issue with the torque converter. July 22, 2026 changed and refilled automatic transmission fluid and did not seem to help much.
I have contacted several Ford service departments seeking repair of my defective 8F35 transmission. A diagnosis for which I paid $215 indicates a new planetary gearset and torque converter, along with miscellaneous small parts, are required. The repair quotation is $4,531. Although my car is now post-warranty, I believe full coverage is appropriate for two reasons: 1) This problem was first reported to and serviced by a Ford dealership while the factory powertrain warranty was in force. The dealer performed TSB 21-2389, a software reload, which provided only temporary resolution; 2) This is a well-known and well-documented factory defect involving the needle bearings in the planetary gearset. Failure of these bearings releases particulate into the fluid which then damages the torque converter. Based on the quotation, I requested and received help from Ford's Financial Goodwill Assistance program, but only 40% of the total cost. To obtain a higher amount requires the assistance of the Service Manager and others within the Ford hierarchy, but they are not interested in helping. Service departments I have dealt with successfully on previous occasions are not touching this 8F35 problem. My cynical side suspects something nefarious is happening behind the scenes, and satisfactory resolution will require a mandatory recall be issued by NHTSA.
I was experiencing shuddering, hard shifting, and jerking while driving my vehicle. I brought it into the shop and was told my transmission was bad. I was quoted $7500 for a re-built transmission, labor and reprogramming. My vehicle has 97,000 miles on but it isn't worth putting that kind of money into. I purchased my 2019 Ford Edge new and have been the only owner. I have maintained my vehicle, taken very good care of it an done all maintenance when suggested. It certainly should go further than 97,000 miles. I am extremely disappointed - - especially now after doing some research and found out that the 2019 Ford Edge is "known" for transmission issues but Ford has done nothing about it. Shame!
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds between 2nd and 5th gears, the vehicle shuddered abnormally. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local independent mechanic where it was scanned with an OBD2 scanner; however, no failure codes were retrieved. The independent mechanic associated the failure with the transmission and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with a possible torque converter failure; however, the vehicle needed further diagnostic tests. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
When accelerating at low speeds the transmission bucks and/or surges so that the car stutters. This is currently happening, two mechanics have checked and see no misfiring and there is no warning light showing but there is clearly some sort of issue with the transmission. This sounds very similar to a recall made in other Ford Edges, I am able to bring it in for inspection upon request. This constant jerking motion impacts safety of myself as the driver and my passengers as it's consistently changing the field of vision when it's pulsing and it is causing motion sickness on extended drives. This has started happening every time I drive and it is unavoidable.
