2010 Ford F-150 Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

2010 FORD F150 ONLY OWNER - Brake Calipers and break line failed. Took it into Ford Dealership and they were unable to provide a diagnosis. Truck still shakes when in idle. All maintenance and needed care for the truck has been maintained. Repair cost over $4k to repair for 6 months in with the issue. Camera does not work and has not since 2014. Heated seats stopped working and burned out in 2014. All issues started to surface after truck was paid off.... Of course

BRAKE FLUID IS LEAKING OUT OF THE MASTER CYLENDER AND INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER. CAUSING LOW BRAKE FLUID IN THE RESIVORE. AND RESULTING IN NO BRAKES. THERE ARE RECALLS FOR THIS ISSUE WITH THE 2013 MODLES. THIS SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO THE 2010 MODLES.

Leaving my driveway today, the 2010 Ford F-150 suddenly indicated a brake fluid level low message and the brake warning indicator turned on. The brake pedal, which was firm about a minute before, suddenly depressed to floor and the truck was stopped only with great difficulty. The sudden change in braking performance would probably have caused an accident if I had been driving in traffic. I took the truck to a mechanic who refilled the master cylinder and bled the brakes. I left the mechanic and pulled out. The brakes were fine leaving the lot. About 1/4 mile later, the brake warning came on and the brakes became spongy. I immediately returned to the mechanic and was informed that the brake master cylinder was draining into the booster. Apparently this is a recall item on later F-150s but it does not appear to include the 2010.

The contact's wife owns a 2010 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving, the vehicle failed to exceed 80 MPH. The contact stated that the ABS and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where DTC: C1440 (Pressure Transducer Main/Primary Signal Faulted) was retrieved. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact provided the DTC: C1440 to the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that the ABS module needed to be replaced; however, the part had been discontinued. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 131,591.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle overheated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the brake pads were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall regarding the electrical system with the brakes. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

Front Left Brake stuck while driving in 2011. Stopped at a stop light and it looked like it was on fire. Pulled to the left and would not get over 50 miles an hour all the way home. 40 mile distance. I took it to an ASE certified mechanic and was told the brake line had collapsed . Had motorcraft brake line and brake pads installed. Later 2012 the right side done the same thing, it was so bad the rotor had to be changed out. 2014 Left side it happened again, this time I bought NAPA Auto parts, break line, brake pads, caliper and rotor. 2015 it happened again on the right side again. I got parts from Rock Auto. Brake pads, rotor, break line and caliper.. 2020 Left side it happened again , same process as before same parts bought again installed . now 1/10/2022 here Iam having to do it again. There is absolutely a problem with the 2010 F-150s, IM not the only person that has had this problem. My question is this, does someone have to die in an accident of brake failure, or die from a fire caused by the brakes heating before this public safety issue is fixed. Ford do a recall and inspect and repair if needed the problem before a death or injury happens. 2 years in to ownership and less that 60,000 miles I started have trouble ,and the mechanic had all ready been advised about the brake line problem is very telling. I want to file a legal complaint against Ford should something happen in the future to me or anyone else out there with a 2010 to 2014 F-150.

On October 5, 2021 (Wednesday) I was driving my 2010 F-150 Lariat and noticed the brakes fading as I came to brake for red lights. I also noticed “BRAKE WARNING” lights & “BRAKE FLUID LEVEL LOW” light come on also. I pulled into a CVS store and looked under the hood to & saw the “Master Cylinder Brake Fluid RESERVOIR” nearly empty. I put 1 bottle of DOT 3 brake fluid in fluid container and saw level go back down, almost empty, upon turning truck on to pressurize the system. I didn’t see any fluid leaking from under truck & bought another bottle of DOT3 Brake Fluid and again the reservoir emptied again. I got the vehicle home and the next day the same thing happened after a 3rd refill of the reservoir. AGAIN STILL NOT SEEING ANY FLUID LEAKS ON MY DRIVEWAY!!! I disconnected a vacuum tube at top of “BRAKE BOOSTER” which is connected to the “Master Cylinder” and looked inside to see large amount of BRAKE FLUID IN THE “BRAKE BOOSTER HOUSING”!!! I saw where 2014 to 2017 Ford F-150’s have been recalled for this exact same SAFETY ISSUE! I will contact my dealership for immediate repair tomorrow, OCTOBER 7, 2021. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a32828805/ford-f-150-brake-recall/ I feel F-150’s back to 2010 should seriously be included in this recall immediately before someone gets seriously injured if not KILLED!!

I was in a parking lot and went to shift the truck out of park and noticed the brake system warning light on. After the vehicle was shifted into drive the brake pedal went to the floor and the only way to stop the vehicle was with the parking brake. The master cylinder was empty of any fluid. I had the vehicle towed to my home for inspection. After checking all brake lines for ruptures or leaks, I removed the master cylinder and discovered the brake booster full of brake fluid. I replaced the master cylinder and the vehicle returned to its normal braking function. The brake booster was also replaced due to the corrosive nature of the brake fluid. Luckily, I was parked and wasn’t driving when the vehicle lost brake function because I wouldn’t have been able to stop the vehicle at highway speed with the parking brake.

While attempting to leave my driveway, I put my foot on the brake pedal in order to put the vehicle into gear. I heard a “pop” and the pedal went to the floor. There were no warning lights on the dash. The vehicle remains, (un-driven) in my driveway. I don’t know what failed and the vehicle has not been inspected. I do notice fluid leaking under the vehicle but don’t know where it’s coming from.

THERE HAVE BEEN 3 TIMES NOW THAT MY VEHICLE HAS RANDOMLY DIED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS. WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING I LOST POWER STEERING AND ALMOST COULDN'T MAKE A TURN. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NO CHIMES. LOOKING INTO IT MYSELF I FOUND THAT THE FUEL RELAY 20AMP FUSE WAS MELTED AND THE PLASTIC AROUND THE TERMINAL ALSO MELTED. FORD HAS A TSB OUT FOR THIS ISSUE BUT I FEEL IT SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR SAFETY PURPOSES AS THERE IS NO WARNING AND YOU LOSE ALL POWER. LITTLE TO NO STEERING OR BRAKES UNTIL YOU COME TO A STOP AND POP THE HOOD OPEN AND WIGGLE THAT FUSE IN HOPES THAT IT WILL MAKE CONTACT AGAIN. THIS MEANS THAT YOU COULD BE LEFT STRANDED OR GET INTO AN ACCIDENT TRYING TO STOP. MANY PEOPLE IN ONLINE FORUMS HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE AND IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ACCORDINGLY.

THE VEHICLE WILL BREAK ON ITS OWN, WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. IT USUALLY OCCURS WHEN TRAVELING AT LOWER SPEEDS. 40 MPH AND LOWER. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY INCIDENTS ON THE FREEWAY, JUST ON THE HIGHWAY AND MOUNTAIN ROADS. NO CODES COME UP. THE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT MAY COME ON BUT IT GOES AWAY.

FRONT BRAKES, FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY WHEN APPLYING BRAKES. PUT NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS ON IT AND 6 MONTHS LATER DOING THE SAME THING. I KEEP HAVING TO TIGHTEN LUG NUTS BECAUSE OF IT. FORD SERVICE ADVISOR SAYS UNFORTUNATELY YEAR MODELS 2009- 2014 HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ROTORS WARPING AND FORD PARTS OR AFTER MARKET PARTS WILL NOT FIX IT. HE SAID THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM IN 2015 BUT THERE THERE IS NOT A FIX FOR MY YEAR MODEL? I DRIVE THE INTERSTATES A LOT AND I AM AFRAID A WHEEL IS GOING TO COME OFF.

FORD F150 4X4 XLT, DASH BOARD KEEPS GOING OUT. SHOWS SKIDDING, AND TIRE SENSOR FAULTY, DINGGING, A/C GOES HOT, INSIDE LIGHTS DON'T WORK. HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES, SPOKE WITH FORD TOOK IT IN, THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, WHICH WE HAVE FOUND OUT IS A LIE. THEY STATED WE NEEDED A NEW BATTERY, WHICH WE HAD TESTED AS WELL AS THE ALTERNATOR AND NOTHING WRONG THERE EITHER. WE TOOK IT TO ADVANCED AUTO TO SEE WHAT THEY COULD TELL US. A YOUNG MAN SAID THAT FORD HAD PUT OUT A INSIDE NOTICE THAT HIS BUDDY SHOWED HIM OF A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS IN THE DASH. HE ASKED IF HE COULD SHOW US A SHORT TERM FIX...HE SMACKED THE DASH AND ALL THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. IF WE HIT A BUMP IT WILL DO IT AGAIN, OR ON REALLY HOT DAYS, BECAUSE OF THE HEAT. WE ARE WAITING ON FORD TO RECALL THIS AS IT IS A SERIOUS HAZARD AND MAYBE START FIRES. AS SOMETIMES YOU SMELL ELECTRICAL, THIS HAPPENS DAILY WHEN EVER WE DRIVE THE TRUCK, YOU CAN HAVE A WRECK TRYING TO SMACK IT HARD ENOUGH TO GET IT TO COME BACK ON. THIS HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE SITTING IN THE TRUCK , DRIVING, OR WHEN YOU GO TO START IT UP...YOU WILL HAVE NO GAUGES, LIGHTS A/C OR HEAT IN THE WINTER. YET THE OUTSIDE LIGHTS WILL WORK, YET WHEN YOU PUSH THE BRAKES YOU HEAR A LOUD CLICKING. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR APPROX. 2.5 YRS +...FORD NEEDS TO RECALL AND FIX THIS. EVERYDAY WE DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEMS MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY. WE BROUGHT THIS TRUCK NEW AND IT FIRST DID THIS AROUND 23,000 MILES. NOW AT JUST OVER 50,000 MILES. THERE ARE TIMES THAT SMACKING THE DASH DOES NOTWORK AND WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON, THOSE TIME YOU HAVE TO RUN WITH TRAFFIC OR IF OTHERS ARE PASSING YOU NEED TO SPEED UP. VERY DANGEROUS

TRUCK HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. BRAKES WORKED HOURS BEFORE IN TRAFFIC. THE DEALERSHIP EXCHANGED THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND THE BRAKE BOOSTER, IN WHICH THE BRAKE CYLINDER LEAKED FLUID INTO.

I TOOK PADS TO AUTO PARTS SALESMAN SAID COMMON ON THOSE 150'S. I LOOKED UP INTERNET IF ANY OTHER OWNER HAD SAME PROBLEMS AND THIS IS A YES. THAT OWNER NEW HOW TO CHECK AND VERIFY PROBLEM AND TOLD HIS DEALER. DEALER FIXED PROBLEM FOR FREE. PROBLEM BAD FRONT CALIPER HOSES, ESPECIALLY PASSENGER SIDE. I TOLD MY DEALER. THEY SAID NO RECALL. WHILE DRIVING DOWN A CITY STREET, THE VEHICLE WAS SUDDENLY UNABLE TO STOP BECAUSE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH COMPLETE BRAKE LOSS, AND THE BRAKE FLUID WARNING LAMP SUDDENLY ILLUMINATED. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ABLE TO STOP ME AND ALLOW ME TO SAFELY PULL OVER. NO FLUID LEAKAGE WAS DISCOVERED UPON INITIAL LOOK BUT THE RESERVOIR WAS EMPTY. THE SOLUTION INVOLVED LOCATING THE MISSING BRAKE FLUID WHICH HAD LEAKED FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER, RESULTING IN THE BRAKE LOSS. UPON REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BOOSTER, THE BRAKES ARE OKAY NOW. THIS PROBLEM IS IDENTICAL TO THE SUMMARY IDENTIFIED UNDER INVESTIGATION PE-16-003 (SEE ATTACHED). *TR

I WAS PULLING ONTO AN UNDIVIDED TWO LANE HWY. AND WAS ACCELERATING UP TO SPEED. THE VEHICLE, WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF WARNING, APPLIED THE BRAKES BY ITSELF CAUSING IT TO VEER HARD LEFT AND PULLING THE TRUCK INTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE. THE INDICATOR LIGHT FOR TRACTION CONTROL FLASHED ON AND OFF IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND YOU COULD HEAR THE ABS DEPLOYING. LUCKY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME OR COMING TOWARDS ME. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND QUITE FRIGHTENING FOR MY FAMILY. WE LIVE IN A RURAL COMMUNITY AND THE DEALERSHIP IS OVER 50 MILES AWAY IN ONE DIRECTION.
