What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Ford Fusion, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle experienced a sudden, complete failure of the electronic power steering assist while operating, resulting in a dangerous increase in steering effort and an immediate safety hazard. A professional OBD-II diagnostic scan retrieved active trouble codes C1277-20 (Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Signal Failure) and C1963-20 (Stability Control Inhibit Warning). This internal sensor failure matches the exact physical defect detailed in NHTSA Campaign Number 15V340000 (Ford Recall 15S18). Ford Corporate and the local dealership refuse to authorize a hardware replacement because they claim a software update completed in 2015 closed the recall on this VIN, despite the software patch failing to prevent the underlying physical hardware failure.
Yesterday evening, my power steering went out (EPAS), it did that when the car had been parked for the night and not in motion thankfully so nobodies safety was at risk, but I don’t know if and when it’ll happen again. According to Ford, it has been a recurring problem with ford fusion modules similar to mine, that the EPAS has been defective, and therefore making it dangerous to drive. My exact car has been inspected by a mechanic, and while it has been looked at, there were no warnings of this error happening, the vehicle was driving fine and all of a sudden, the error occurred.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle independently accelerated while the brake pedal was depressed. No warning light was illuminated. The failure reoccurred on several occasions. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
Powertrain light came on and threw code p1450 and car went into limp mode. Car will stall at stops and lights and won't go over 40. Replaced the canister purge valve which turned light off but it immediately came back once trying to over 40 and went back into limp mode. Everything I have read and ai has said based on diagnostic information says it's the electronic throttle body which has a recall for this model and year of car but not this vin for some reason.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.

My 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid is dangerous to me and others on the road. When I drove my car, was coming to a stopping point and it didn't want to stop. It does it off and on. I took it to the dealership and was told I needed a abs module. They didn't have any because they was on back order. This was during the pandemic and as of 2026 they are still on back order. I also purchased two abs modules used for my vehicle and took it to the dealership to be programmed and was told it wouldn't program. Please I'm needing assistance with this situation
The contact's boyfriend owns a 2011 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who retrieved a fault code for a failure with the canister purge valve. The contact called another independent mechanic and was given an estimate for repair. The mechanic also referred the contact to Technical Service Bulletin: 15S34. The dealer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that the TSB did not apply to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Powertrain light came on and threw code p1450 and car went into limp mode. Car will stall at stops and lights and won't go over 40. Replaced the canister purge valve which turned light off but it immediately came back once trying to over 40 and went back into limp mode. Everything I have read and ai has said based on diagnostic information says it's the electronic throttle body which has a recall for this model and year of car but not this vin for some reason.

My driver heating element in my seat stopped working. I went to get it fixed and that’s when they noticed the charred heating pad in the seat had burnet makers on it. I have picture showing that the electrical part in the heating pad indicator has black marks around the wires and burnt through the pad and the electrical coils. The seat under the leather part had damage to it. This would have caused a fire. I’m very lucky. I bought the part on [XXX]. I just want to be reimburse from Ford Dealership the part cost. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN I WAS TOOD IT WAS DUE TOA RECALL AND EVEN WITH MY EXTENSED WARRANTY I AM BEING REFUSED AND MY VWHICLE HAS BEEN AT WILLOWBROOK FORD FOR TWO MONTHS, I cannot afford the repairs up front and sunbilt will only approve for $500 financing. Please help me if there are any solutions to fix my only means transportation and have the customer satisfaction service codes approved for repair
Was driving down a busy road with my [XXX] and [XXX] , when all of a sudden my steering wheel got super tight and the car shut down. A message stating "power steering assist fault" popped up on my dashboard. There was ZERO warning before it happened. I just bought this car 3 months ago from a facebook marketplace car dealer. When this incident happened 2 weeks ago, I googled 2011 ford fusion recalls and it says NHTSA recalled in 2015. When I'm not understanding is why a VIN number makes a difference, when I'm having the problem on the type of year/model that was recalled. I have been informed about the customer satisfaction program, which expired years before I purchased the vehicle. Again, why should that fall on me? Thanks INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUN ROOF EXPLODED AND IMPLODED GLASS WITHOUT WARNING. THE GLASS PARTICLES ENTERED THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. SHENANDOAH FORD (9135 WINCHESTER RD, FRONT ROYAL, VA 22630, (540) 636-2901) WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACT, BUT DID NOT SPECIFY THAT THEY WOULD DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE OTHER THAN HAVING THE INSURANCE COMPANY COVER THE REPAIR AND FOR THE CONTACT TO REPLACE THE PART. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 146,000.
THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD MULTIPLE HEATER/AC FAN MOTOR INOPERATIVE PROBLEMS. WITHOUT THE BLOWER FAN WORKING THERE IS NO DEFROST OR ABILITY TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD, RESULTING IN REDUCED OR NO VISIBILITY. THE FIRST REPAIR WAS AUG 18TH, 2016. MILEAGE WAS 36110. A HEATER CONTROL ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $426.05. THE SECOND REPAIR WAS AUG 29TH, 2016. THE MILEAGE WAS 36251. THE BLOWER RESISTOR WIRING TO THE FAN ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED FOR $371.27. THE THIRD REPAIR WAS JUL 12TH, 2018. MILEAGE WAS 46594. THE BLOWER MOTOR WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE SAME WIRING DONE AT THE SECOND REPAIR FOR $618.98. FORD WOULD NOT HELP WITH THE COST OF ANY REPAIRS. AFTER READING FORD FUSION FORUMS ON THE INTERNET, THIS PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE COMMON. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE WINDSHIELD CAN FOG UP QUICKLY IN WINTER OR SUMMER, AND ICING CAN BUILD UP IN WINTER CAUSING LOSS OF VISIBILITY. IT IS DANGEROUS TO TRY TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. I THINK THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR A RECALL. I HAVE THE INVOICES TO SEND IF NEEDED BUT NO ACCESS TO A SCANNER AT THIS TIME.
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTING IS UNPREDICTABLE. 1-2 AND 2-3 GEAR SHIFT WILL REV AT HIGH RPM AND SLAM INTO GEAR. MERGING INTO TRAFFIC OR AT ANY INTERSECTION WHERE CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP IS VERY DANGEROUS AS ACCELERATION IS NON-EXISTENT UNTIL IT SLAMS HARD INTO GEAR. THE CAR HAS DONE THIS FROM 1ST WEEK OF OWNERSHIP. BESIDES SAFETY ISSUE, THE TRANSMISSION AT THIS RATE WILL NOT LAST LONG. THIS ISSUE IS MAINLY PRESENT WHEN 1) COLD OR 2) AFTER THE CAR HAS SIT FOR A COUPLE DAYS MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THE DEALER TO ACT ON ANYTHING. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH 2010 FORD FUSIONS AND NOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING OF THIS ISSUE WITH THE 2011 FUSION (NOT THE SPORT MODEL AS IT USES DIFFERENT TRANSMISSION). *TR
THE TRANSMISSION SEIZED WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 MILES PER HOUR, CAUSING RAPID DECELERATION WHILE ON HIGHWAY. SHORTLY AFTER COMING TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO ENGAGE, DESPITE ENGINE RUNNING. *TR
