2024 Ford Mustang Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 2024 Ford Mustang submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 9 reports on file name it.

I purchased this vehicle CPO and shortly after purchase the vehicle experienced a major mechanical failure involving the clutch/transmission. The vehicle had a prior safety recall (Recall #24S36) listed as “completed” before I purchased it. However, the issue has now reoccurred despite that recall being marked as repaired. The dealership is now claiming the failure is due to “wear and tear,” but the failure occurred after only approximately 1,000 miles of driving since purchase, which raises concern that the defect existed prior to sale or that the recall repair was not properly completed. The vehicle is currently unsafe to drive due to the risk of sudden loss of power and drivability issues. I do not feel safe operating the vehicle. I am requesting that this issue be investigated as a potential recall-related defect or improper recall repair, as it poses a safety risk.

My 2024 Ford Mustang has been experiencing a serious mechanical issue that the manufacturer has been unable to repair. The vehicle has been at the dealership for an extended period because a defective component cannot be replaced. Ford acknowledged that the required part has not yet been manufactured. The vehicle has remained unresolved for over five months. This creates a potential safety concern because the vehicle cannot be reliably used or repaired.

Blown 2.3 Ecoboost. At approx 4700 miles while driving got an engine light and severe misfire. Report from Ford technician says that part of a spark plug broke off in #4 cylinder and caused severe damage. Motor (long block) and turbo replaced under warranty and after 700 miles is running fine.

I purchased a new 2024 Mustang GT. Shortly after I experiences a dead throttle. The car would coast to a near stop and pushing the gas pedal multiple times had no effect. This has happen more than 4 times now. It was taken into the dealership twice. The first time the car was kept for a week and returned with no problem found. The second time is was returned more quickly again with no problem found. With what was asked I don't think I was taken seriously. I drive in areas with poor visibility due to hills and curves and only single lane roads without usable shoulders. Twice it happened in middle of one of these roads and I was at a near stop in middle of the roadway. I was nearly rear ended my a truck traveling at high speed twice with nowhere or no way to move. Another time exiting one street and enter on to another rather busy street with fast moving traffic. The car nearly came to a complete stop in mid turn. Power came back just in time to avoid an accident. I and possibly others could have easily been seriously injured or worse in any of those. I have concerns taking this car anywhere at this point.

The contact owns a 2024 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was not available.

2024 Ford Mustang Ecoboost, Purchased New, Under 6,000 miles, check engine light came on. Vehicle was entering freeway and immediately had a loss of power. When taken to dealer, they stated that it was a cylinder 2 misfire, 2 weeks later they said I needed a new engine. The safety of myself and others were at risk because my vehicle lost power on the highway and immediately started shaking and making noise while operating at road posted speeds. This is not a first time occurance, I have the same model vehicle that I purchased in 2015 that did the exact same thing, only before 90k miles. There is a common element and I've heard other vehicle owners that have this same vehicle complaining of the same problem. They call it "Ecoboom" and Ford seems to be ignoring the problem.

• Std Cruise Control failure. Yes, available for inspection, test drive and failure analysis. • Upon turning CC (Cruise control) on the Green Icon appears (should be Ghost Icon) AND is set at the speed limit. If below the speed limit NO speed up to "SET" speed occurs. Instead if you speed up, manually, to "SET" speed you can't go past the "SET" speed. Pressing on the accelerator has a power loss and flat lining. Speed does not increase until you go to heavy open throttle then it "TAKES OFF". Impossible to drive in Cruise control mode. • Problem was presented to Gaudin Ford Dealership >>> Twice. Once on December 17th, 2024 and again on March 4th, 2025 Gaudio Ford States " NPF - No problem found normal operation at this time". I was driving home from work at approximately 65mph when my transmission shifted and slammed back into gear. I stopped in a safe location, cut the car off and then back on, but the transmission is still slipping. The dealership was notified of powertrain, electrical, and oil consumption issues at three different service appointments, but the manufacturer has been no help at all. Had I not known what to do, this could have been a completely different scenario.

From a stop at a traffic light on [XXX], I made a right turn from [XXX] onto [XXX] in Greensboro NC, and after turning, the car did not respond when I pressed on the accelerator so as to go with the traffic. Instead, the car gradually slowed down. Before the car rolled to a stop in the middle of the road, the engine caught on and the car speeded up normally. The risk is that I would become stopped in the middle of a busy road and that someone rear end into me. If this problem were to occur as I was entering onto an interstate highway, where traffic routinely moves along at 70 mph and more, it would not be good. I took my car to Green Ford, the local dealership, on July 9, 2024. They found a defective battery (which was replaced under the car's warranty), and the dealership said the problems (accelerator and also brakes) were likely caused by a defective battery. (At the same visit the dealership also examined my brakes, which had failed, and which I am describing in a separate incident report). The accelerator problem occurred again on [XXX] when I pulled out of my apartment parking lot onto [XXX] , and after turning onto [XXX] , the car gradually started to slow down, and would have come to a stop. I pushed on the accelerator repeatedly and the car, before stopping, got up to speed (the speed limit is 35 mph on [XXX] ). The next day, on October 8, 2024, at the Green Ford dealership, the dealership could find nothing wrong with the car. On [XXX], on the way downtown (to the Ford Dealership) I experienced the accelerator problem several tines. The dealership did not examine the car again, but advised me to keep detailed notes for a week and after a week report back to them. . Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
