What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2019 GMC Acadia, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

While attempting to turn vehicle off, the message shift to park was given. Could not shut vehicle off! Has happened multiple times in the past, then disappears for awhile. Comes back again at will. Have seen multiple complaints on this issue falling back to a defective micro-switch within the shifter assym. Former GM tech here---
On XXX at 1:56pm, I took the vehicle to Jiffy Lube service center #810 for the "Quick Oil Change Service" which includes checking and filling the Tranmission/Axle fluid. Per the attached receipt the Transmission/Axle fluid was "OK", and the next service was recommended after 5,000 addtional miles from the then current mileage of 153,317. On the morning o XXX, the car began experiencing issues identical to vehicle recall NHTSA ID Number: 20V668000. The check engine light turned on and the vehicle could maintain proper propulsion. On XXX at 3:25pm EST, I took the vehicle to AutoZone store #01664, whose "FixFinder" computer diagnostic inicated code PO700 "Transmission Control Module Requested MIL Illumination". On XXX, I had the car towed to a private mechanic who inspected the Vehicle and indicated that the transmission had "no fluid" despite having the fluids verified by Jiffy Lube on XXX. The mechanic suggested there may be a GMC service issue that required GMC remediation to due faulty internals which resulted in the transmission fluid leakage and subsequent triggering of the transmission computer module and related propulsion failure. As of today XXX, the vehicle is experiencing the same condition as indicated in vehicle recall NHTSA ID Number: 20V668000, which is creating additonal risk of vehicular accident/crash and vehicle fire in the presence of the ignition source. The milage is now 155,520. I am requesting this vehicle be serviced as part of recall NHTSA ID Number: 20V668000, you can verify from the vehicle registration from the Divison of Motor Vehicles and via CarFax that I purchased this vehicle used, the vehiclee has at least 1 (maybe 2) prior owners. I am requesting the vehicle (VIN [XXX]) receive the mandated recall service which will resolve the afformentioned issues and remove the related risks for myself, my passengers and all other motorists who are sharing the road. Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I own a 2019 GMC Acadia equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine. VIN. See form above In 2025, the engine coolant thermostat failed on my vehicle and required replacement at my expense. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this may represent a recurring component problem affecting 2019 GMC Acadia vehicles and I would like NHTSA to determine whether the condition presents an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. General Motors has published service information addressing thermostat-related conditions on GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with the 3.6L engine. GM has also issued special coverage for an engine coolant thermostat condition on certain GM vehicles. GM’s special coverage describes a thermostat that can open at a lower temperature than intended, resulting in a malfunction indicator/check-engine light and diagnostic trouble code, and in some cases causing the engine cooling fans to continue running after the vehicle is shut off. My 2019 Acadia uses the 3.6L engine and the thermostat assembly addressed in GM’s service information. Despite this, my 2019 model year is not included in the current extended thermostat coverage. There is also a second, independent occurrence involving the same model year. My father owns a separate 2019 GMC Acadia, and the thermostat on his vehicle also required replacement in 2026. These are two separate vehicles that experienced thermostat failures requiring replacement. I understand that a thermostat failure is not necessarily a safety defect by itself. However, I am concerned that a recurring failure of this component could potentially create a safety risk depending on the failure mode and resulting vehicle condition. I am therefore asking NHTSA to review the available consumer complaints, manufacturer service information, warranty data, and GM special-coverage actions to determine whether there is a safety-related defect affecting 2019 GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with the 3.6L engine.
I am submitting this complaint to request that NHTSA investigate a potential safety defect involving the engine coolant temperature monitoring system, thermostat/engine coolant temperature sensor system, and its relationship to reduced steering assist in 2019 GMC Acadia vehicles. My 2019 GMC Acadia, currently at approximately 91,500 miles, has experienced the following symptoms: • The engine temperature gauge remains flat or reads abnormally low/cold. • The cooling fans run continuously at extremely high speed, creating a loud "screaming" fan noise. • The vehicle displays the warning message "Steering Assist is Reduced — Drive with Care." • The vehicle has a history of diagnostic trouble code P0128, "Engine Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature." I am concerned that these symptoms are related and represent a potential safety defect rather than an isolated thermostat or cooling-system repair. GM has issued bulletin PIT5967, "Service Steering Message With P0128," which applies to GMC Acadia vehicles from model years 2017 through 2023. The bulletin states that when P0128 is present, the ECM may be reading coolant temperature incorrectly and that a "Service Steering Message" may be displayed to protect the steering gear in the event of an undetected overheating condition. GM instructs technicians to diagnose and repair P0128 first. GM bulletin 17-NA-158 also describes a relationship between P0128, an invalid coolant-temperature signal, and the "Steering Assist Reduced, Drive With Care" warning. The bulletin explains that the steering module relies on valid coolant-temperature information to provide additional steering assistance under cold conditions. Also will not register when put in park. Getting error message "shift to park" take multiple restarts of the vehicle and shifting gear back and forth for it to register.

Park to shift issue - the vehicle did not register that I was in park, jerked hard when trying to place in gear, did not register the PROPER gear (reverse, neutral, drive), would NOT unlock doors to let passengers out even if it were an emergency. Seems to be triggered on inclines but have also been having issues on flat ground. Other Acadia's apparently have a recall for this issue but my VIN does not register as recalled which is not acceptable. https://www.quillarrowlaw.com/blog/gmc-acadia-shift-to-park-recall-what-owners-need-to-know/ THEN trying to accelerate on road it acted as though in neutral, would only barely function in low gear. Again, gear shifting did not respond. The fab did not register to unlock the car (it has a new battery) or the trunk, or start the car just prior to the issue revealing itself.
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the shift to park message was displayed. There was a constant abnormal dinging sound detected, and the vehicle failed to remain in park. While having a routine inspection, it was determined that the rear trailing arms bushings were worn out and the vehicle failed the inspection. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V516000 (Power Train). The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

Headlights are so dim that we will not drive the car at night. Dealer's service manager says that he knows about the problem but "there's nothing I can do to fix it". I see a few similar complaints on this site, but nothing as to who to contact to get the problem solved NOR any action on this on the part of the NHSTA. Where do we go from here?
I just purchased this vehicle and within a day, it was already giving an alert that something was wrong. Says "action required, shift to park". My car was in park. It was not shutting off due to the notification, which leads your battery to drain. The next day, as I was driving with my kids, the headlights start flickering, and then shut off. It left us driving in the dark and nearly causing a wreck because someone didn't see us coming because it was too dark. The dealership said they look at it, so I don't know what will happen moving forward. It's definitely not safe unless the issue is addressed.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.

The contact owns a 2019 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate fuel level. The fuel sending unit was replaced twice; however, the failure persisted. The contact became aware of the recurring failure while refueling the vehicle and noticing that the vehicle consumed more fuel than the fuel gauge indicated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the fuel sending unit needed to be disassembled for further diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone. The failure mileage was 64,382.
Im a travel nurse and I was working in Vermont. As I was driving on the highway in New York on my way back home a shift to park light came on, a stabilitrak light came on, power steering light came on, ABS light came on, and my check engine light also came on. My vehicle started slowing down as I was driving and my lights on my dashboard were turning on and off and my speedometer was not working. I was able to pull to the side off the highway so I could get out of harms way. I made a call to OnStar for help and they asked to if I made it to a safe location. As the car was still on I was able to take the next exit and ended up in an auto zone parking lot. As I made it in the parking lot I turned the vehicle off but only the engine turned off but everything else stayed on and the shift to park light kept coming on when the vehicle was in park. I was in the parking lot for 3-4 hours freezing in my vehicle until onstar came to tow my vehicle. By the time onstar came my battery in my car had drained and it was a new battery. I was told that I would have to contact auto transport to transport my vehicle to Louisiana at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. I paid $1600 to transport my vehicle back home and I had to find a way to make it back to Louisiana. I didn’t have a credit card so a friend of mine was able to rent me a vehicle to get home and I paid a total of $1700 on a rental because the dealership in Louisiana couldn’t give me a time or date the vehicle would have been finished. I have been to the dealership 3 times now for the same problem in less than a week. I have paid $1500 altogether to fix damages on my car that I noticed other vehicles with the same make and model had the same issues. I never had a problem with my vehicle before everything just started happening all at once. I’m currently having to pay for car rentals to get to and from work and to make sure my kids get back and forth to school. My vehicle in at the dealership again for the 3rd t

I took my 2019 GMC Acadia in for an inspection and was informed that the toe links were loose and fail inspection. Upon researching this failure, I found that there is a recall for this, but my VIN was no included. I don't understand why not given what I'm seeing from other owners. I quote from the GMC Authority site: [XXX] "GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for certain 2022 model-year Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 and GMC Acadia crossovers over an issue related to the rear toe links. The problem: affected vehicles may have a left-rear suspension toe link with a fastener that was not properly tightened during assembly at the factory. The GMC Acadia is built at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, but will soon be moved to the GM Lansing Grand River plant to make room for the Cadillac Lyriq. The Cadillac XT5 and XT6 are also built at Spring Hill and will remain there for the foreseeable future." Based on other feedback seen, it appears this should be a recall for my vehicle as well. Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased a used 2019 GMC Acadia from Grieco Honda around November 20, 2023. They showed me a CarFax report indicating the vehicle had never been in an accident. Immediately after the purchase, I reported several issues and attempted to return the car under their 30-day warranty. However, the salesperson convinced me not to return it, assuring me that they would address all of the problems. From the beginning, I complained that the car shook violently when driving between 45–60 mph, especially during acceleration. The vehicle took an unusually long time to heat up, and the brakes were loud and squeaky. A few months later, after driving over a large speed bump, the airbag warning light turned on. During my next oil change, I mentioned this issue, along with a problem with the window sensor. They dismissed my concerns and told me to take the car to GMC across the street because they lacked the tools to diagnose it. At GMC Hurd, I was told the diagnostic service would cost $160 and that I would need to leave the vehicle for the day. At the time, I couldn’t leave the car because I needed it to pick up my children. Now, in November 2025, my inspection is due. I brought the car back to GMC, and they informed me that the vehicle had been in a major accident prior to my ownership. They discovered that the airbags had previously deployed and were stuffed back into the driver’s seat and sewn shut. I have never been in an accident with this car. I reported this to Grieco since they were the ones who inspected the vehicle in November 2023 and passed it. I believe they managed to get the car through inspection without properly or thoroughly examining it before selling it to me. They have dismissed my concerns and told me there is nothing they can do. This is outrageous, as the airbags would not have deployed in an emergency, putting my safety at serious risk.

The check engine light came on 12/2023. The vehicle was taken to Pep Boys and AutoZone in MD, WalMart and O'Rilley in Bastrop, LA, O'Rilley in Midlothian, TX. They could not find any problems with the vehicle. I took the vehicle to GMC in Plano, TX. THey charged me for a new battery but the check engine light remained on after I picked up the vehicle with a newly installed battery. The dealership said it would eventually go off. I took the car to Automotive Solutions in September 2024 and they can not find anything wrong with the vehicle. The car can not pass Texas inspection with a check engine light on. There is a large group on FB having this same problem. August 2024 the car will recognize when it is shifted into park. Sometimes it rolls after puting the car in park.I took the car to Automotive Soulutions in September 2024 and they can not find anything wrong with the vehicle. There is a large group on FB having this same problem. I took the car into a GMC dealership in MA because i hit a curb in 2021. The steering wheel feels loose. I took the car in 2022 & 2023 for the same problem. The dealership charges me for repairs but there is a reoccurring steering problem. Other drivers have noticed this problem with my vehicle.
During a routine oil and filter change the technician noted that the "rear tow links are excessive play in them." Several GMC vehicles have had numerous recalls to tow links over the years. Dealership suggested the repair and confirmed services were not covered under warranty. After further research into the repair there are countless forums and complaints about GMC vehicles needing tow link replacement. Photos of the original tow links show minimal wear and tear.

The contact owns a 2019 GMC Acadia. The contact stated the center rear seat belt failed to extend as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,456.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH THE SHIFTER OF THE VEHICLE TWICE NOW AND IT HAS RESULTED IN REPLACING THE SHIFTER AT LEAST ONCE. 6 MONTHS LATER AND AFTER AN INITIAL REPLACEMENT THE SHIFTER HAS GONE OUT AGAIN. THE SHIFTER REFUSES TO MOVE OUT OF THE PARK FUNCTION. PRIOR TO THE SHIFTER GOING OUT THE CAR WOULD SAY SHIFT TO PARK EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS ALREADY PLACED IN PARK. I BELIEVE THE ISSUE TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. THE MIDDLE SEAT BELT IN THE SECOND ROW OF THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO STOPPED WORKING. *TR

I purchased my vehicle brand new off the truck in march of 2020 with zero miles on it. Feb 2021 in negative degree weather, the heat on my vehicle stopped working. I called my local GM dealership and they told me they needed to diagnosed the vehicle. They had kept my vehicle for two weeks trying to diagnose the vehicle. It turned out to be the thermostat. they replaced that part on my vehicle. Now Dec 2021 I again have experienced the same problem this time it was in a blizzard. Dealership told me it cant be the same problem, however it will be another two weeks before they can get my vehicle in for service and do not have a loaner vehicles for use. I purchased a new vehicle with warranty as I have two small children and am currently pregnant.

After roughly 7000 miles of use the 235/55R20 102V Goodyear Assurance Weatherready tire has a bulge in the sidewall. There are no scuffs or scars on the tire to indicate an impact caused the bulge, it appears there is some sort of separation within the layers of the sidewall. I asked a Goodyear retailer to inspect the tire and they said it's automatically considered impact damage if the bulge is in the sidewall and Goodyear would not warrant such damage even though there is no evidence such as cuts, scuffs or scars. The tire inflation is to manufacturer's specifications and the tire isn't loosing pressure. DOT 1M78AJA5R purchased Oct 22, 2023 date code 3622
