Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
2
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

  • Electrical650.0%
  • Fuel system325.0%
  • Engine216.7%
  • Visibility18.3%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

Safety investigations

NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.

Fuel level gauge system failure

Opened Apr 25, 2011
Closed Sep 23, 2011

The office of defects investigations (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by General Motors (GM) as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 5,089 unique reports indicating an inaccurate fuel level reading while driving.General Motors stated that this condition occurs when the contacts of the fuel sensor wear prematurely. Most of the complaints indicated an empty fuel gauge reading after filling the tank.Less than 10 percent of theODI complaints involved an engine stall incident.During this investigation, GM developed a remedy procedure and issued special coverage bulletin instructing dealers to install a new design fuel level sensor. The bulletin was sent to dealers on August 10, 2011 and the owner letter mailing began on August 15, 2011.See the investigative file for copies of GM's bulletin and owner letter. This preliminary evaluation is closed.

Fuel Level Gauge System Failure

Opened Jan 7, 2010
Closed May 23, 2011

The Office of Defects Investigation has received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving in model year 2005-07 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, and Saab 9-7x vehicles.Of the 668 complaints, 58 incidents were alleged to result in a vehicle stall.Of the 58 stalling incidents, 43 complaints reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than what is actually in the fuel tank. One complaint alleged a vehicle crash after the vehicle stalled while exiting the interstate, became disabled, and was struck from behind.Summarily, the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most complaints received within the past year.A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

TOOK CAR IN TWICE TO [XXX] BLACK KENNESAW BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I INFORMED THEM ON BOTH SERVICE VISITS THAT I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GMC BUT THEY SAID MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

WHILE DRIVING, I COULD NOT TELL WHAT THE CAR'S SPEED WAS. THE NEEDLE WOULD GO UP AND THEN FALL BACK DOWN, AND THEN WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING FOR A FEW MINUTES. THIS WOULD GO ON EVERY TIME I DROVE. I LOOKED TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL, BUT THERE WASN'T. THERE HAD BEEN SOME COMPLAINTS AND I EVEN CALLED GM AND PLACED A COMPLAINT. I COULDN'T CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS WAY, IT WAS TO DANGEROUS, SO I WENT TO MY MECHANIC AND HAD IT REPAIRED. IT COST ME $540.79 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED! I WAITED AND WAITED FOR A RECALL BECAUSE I KNEW THERE HAD BEEN OTHERS IN THE SAME SITUATION AS ME. IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT GM WON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FAULTY PARTS THAT THEY PLACE ON THEIR VEHICLES. I ALSO HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY FUEL TANK SENSOR AND I HAD IT REPAIRED THREE YEARS BEFORE GM WOULD EVER ACKNOWLEDGE THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I WAS REIMBURSED BY GM, BUT ONLY IF THE REPAIRS WERE DONE BY A GM DEALER. I GUESS I'LL BE STUCK WITH THE CLUSTER REPAIR SINCE IT WASN'T REPAIRED BY A DEALER. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT THAT COST WOULD HAVE BEEN AT THE DEALER! GM NEEDS TO SUCK IT UP AND REIMBURSE INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE HAD REPAIRS COMPLETED EVEN IF IT'S NOT BY THE DEALER. THE REPLACEMENT PART IS STILL FROM GM, AND AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A RECEIPT! *TR

MY WINDOW CONTROLS ON DRIVER SIDE WILL NOT ROLL DOWN ANY WINDOW; HOWEVER, YOU CAN ROLL DOWN ANY WINDOW FROM SPECIFIC DOOR CONTROL. WHEN I PUT DOWN THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW, WHILE PARKED, THE INDOOR LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING, THERE WERE CLICKING NOISES AND THE PASSENGER WINDOW WENT UP ALL BY ITSELF. TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT! IT ONLY STOPPED WHEN I OPENED THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. A COUPLE HOURS LATER I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO ANOTHER DESTINATION. WHEN I TOOK THE KEYOF OUT, THE LIGHTS FLASHED AND AGAIN THE CLICKING NOISES. IT STOPPED WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR. OF COURSE, RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND I AM UNABLE TO CONTACT DEALER. I DID LEAVE A MESSAGE AND HOPEFULLY GET FIXED SOON. *TR

UPON FILLING GAS TANK TO FULL, FUEL GAUGE INDICATED EMPTY AND LOW FUEL LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THIS INDICATION NOW COMES AND GOES AND IS ERRATIC AND UNRELIABLE. NOTE: I RECEIVED A LETTER ( NOT A RECALL ) FROM GM LAST YEAR SAYING IF MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM TO NOTIFY MY DEALER FOR SERVICE. APPEARS TO ME, GM KNEW IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS BY GM ENVOY OWNERS SINCE THEN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. MY LOCAL GM DEALER SAYS THAT GM WILL FIX THE PROBLEM AND PAY ONLY HALF THE COST. THIS WELL KNOWN PROBLEM IS OF EPIDEMIC PROPORTION. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN UPGRADED TO A RECALL. *TR

PIT3271P

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about changing the tire and wheel size on vehicles. General Motors will only support a tire calibration for tires that have been sized, tested and designed for the vehicle in question and its applications. Technician should not use the information that is provided by the antilock braking system tire size selection.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
