Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
2
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

Loss of Headlights

Opened Apr 24, 2017
Closed Mar 29, 2021

The subject vehicles are model year (MY) 2002-2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2004-2007 Buick Rainier, 2003-2008 Isuzu Ascender, 2005-2009 Saab 9-7X, 2002-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2003-2006 Chevrolet SSR, 2005-2009 Buick Lacrosse, and 2006-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. This scope includes the Trailblazer/Envoy variants: 2002-2006 Envoy XL/Trailblazer EXT and 2004-2005 Envoy XUV. The original scope of this investigation was expanded to include all vehicles equipped with the subject Headlight Driver Module (HDM). The focus of the investigation was to determine whether actions performed by General Motors adequately addressed any unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety in the subject vehicles concerning the headlights and the HDM that controls them.Under normal electrical load and environmental conditions, the HDM can overheat inside the Underhood Electrical Center (UEC). This can cause the module to fail and result in a simultaneous loss of both low beam headlights and both daytime running lights (DRLs), often with no warning or prior detectability to the driver. This failure can be intermittent or permanent. No other exterior lights are affected. High beams, turn signals, brake lights, and reverse lights are still operational.General Motors addressed this issue with 2 recalls (14V755 & 15V519) and a special coverage program (N172091910). In view of the recalls and special coverage program implemented by GM and the vehicle high beams continuing to operate, ODI has tentatively concluded that the actions taken by GM mitigate any unreasonable risk to safety posed by HDM failure in the subject vehicles.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances. The ODI reports cited above are available for review online at NHTSA.gov under the identification numbers in the attached document.

Fuel Level Gauge System Failure

Opened Jan 7, 2010
Closed May 23, 2011

The Office of Defects Investigation has received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving in model year 2005-07 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, and Saab 9-7x vehicles.Of the 668 complaints, 58 incidents were alleged to result in a vehicle stall.Of the 58 stalling incidents, 43 complaints reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than what is actually in the fuel tank. One complaint alleged a vehicle crash after the vehicle stalled while exiting the interstate, became disabled, and was struck from behind.Summarily, the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most complaints received within the past year.A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

THE SPEEDOMETER HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM, WITH IT NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IT WILL GO OUT OF WACK WHILE DRIVING, AND YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR SPEED IS WHEN IT DROPS PAST THE 120 MPH RANGE, THEN WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED, IT MAY READ 60 OR 70 MPH RANGE. PEOPLE ARE MAKING COMPLAINTS ALL OVER ABOUT THIS AS WELL AS THE GAS GAUGE DOING THE SAME THING. GMC DEALER STATES THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON THESE PROBLEMS. THESE ARE SAFETY RELATED PROBLEMS, AND NEED TO BE RECALLED. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY VEHICLE (STILL IN FORCE), WITH A $100 DEDUCTIBLE, BUT WHY SHOULD THE WARRANTY COMPANY PAY FOR THIS, IF IT IS A PROBLEM WITH GM (MANY MAKES AND MODELS, NOT JUST MINE). I ALSO KNOW FOR FACT, WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, AND THAT IS THESE GAUGES HAVE "STEPPER MOTORS", THAT CONTROL THE "NEEDLE" THAT SHOWS SPEED, FUEL, RPM, ECT, AND THE STEPPER MOTORS ARE THE DEFECTIVE PART. WHEN THE STEPPER MOTORS ARE REPLACED, THEY HAVE A NEW PART NUMBER, AS THE DEFECTIVE ONES HAVE THE OLD PART NUMBER. ALL GM DEALERS ARE AWARE OF THIS, YET REFUSE TO REPLACE AT THERE COST. IF THE OEM EQUIPMENT WAS FINE, THEN WHY ARE THE REPLACEMENTS DIFFERENT AND WITH A NEW PART NUMBER. MY GMC DEALER SHIP, WON'T EVEN REPLACE THE STEPPER MOTORS, AND WANT TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THIS AGAIN IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND A MONEY ISSUE, AS I KNOW FIRST HAND AFTER RECEIVING A $165 SPEEDING TICKET, NOT KNOWING HOW FAST I WAS GOING WITH NO TRAFFIC AROUND. THE GAS GAUGE MAY READ HALF A TANK, AND THEN YOU STALL OUT ON THE FREEWAY, AND GET REAR ENDED, WHICH AT THOSE SPEEDS, HOPE YOU OR THE PERSON THAT REAR ENDS YOU SURVIVE! NOT TO MENTION AN INSURANCE CLAIM (AUTO AND/OR BI CLAIM), AND/OR A POSSIBLE DEATH. BY THE WAY, I AM AN AUTO INSURANCE ADJUSTER BY TRADE, AND HAVE BEEN FOR 34 YEARS. I SIMPLY WANT A RECALL ON THIS ONGOING PROBLEM, SO FOLKS CAN DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD SAFELY AGAIN, WITH PEACE OF MIND. *TR

THE SPEEDOMETER HAS GOTTEN STUCK AT 120 MPH & WILL NOT RESET... THIS HAS HAPPENED OFF & ON & I WAS USUALLY ABLE TO RESET THE SPEEDOMETER BY TURNING ON AND OFF THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES... BUT NOW, IT HAS OFFICIALLY STAYED AT 120MPH. I AM UNABLE TO TELL HOW FAST I AM ACTUALLY DRIVING. I KNOW GMC HAD SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THEIR CHEVROLET VEHICLES - & THAT RESULTED IN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO HAVE THEM ISSUE A RECALL.... I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE A RECALL ON THIS... IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE THIS WAY!! *TR

I OWN A 2005 GMC ENVOY XUV WITH APPROXIMATELY 64000 MILES ON IT. THE COMPLAINT I WISH TO REPORT IS A MALFUNCTION WITH THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR. THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR HAS STOPPED WORKING AND READS EMPTY CONSTANTLY, EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FULL OF FUEL. THE SENSOR CHIMES A WARNING SOUND TO INDICATE FUEL IS LOW. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR US FOR 5 MONTHS. WE HAVE SPENT MUCH TIME RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE TO TRY TO REPAIR IT OURSELVES, AND IT HAS SEEMED TO BE AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS DEALERSHIP ATTENTION. I WAS IN PROCESS OF SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT WITH GMC, WHEN A LETTER FROM GMC ARRIVED IN THE MAIL. THEY WERE ABLE TO LOCATE US BY OUR VIN. IN THE LETTER, GMC FULLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE FAULTY FUEL LEVEL SENSOR AND OFFERS TO PAY 50% OF REPAIR COSTS AT A CERTIFIED GMC DEALERSHIP. ALTHOUGH I APPRECIATE THEIR OFFER, THE REPAIR WILL STILL BE APPROXIMATELY $200 AT 50%. I AM WRITING TODAY TO LET MY VOICE BE HEARD THAT THE LAST FEW MONTHS DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY CHALLENGING. I HAVE HAD TO BE CONSTANTLY AWARE OF MY EXACT MILEAGE, AND FEARFUL OF RUNNING OUT OF FUEL, STRANDED ON THE INTERSTATE WITH MY FAMILY. TO ME, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT GMC SHOULD REPAIR AS A COURTESY TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE REPUTATION OF AN AMERICAN COMPANY AND AM HOPING THAT OTHERS ALONG WITH US WILL REPORT THIS ISSUE. *TR

PIT3271P

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about changing the tire and wheel size on vehicles. General Motors will only support a tire calibration for tires that have been sized, tested and designed for the vehicle in question and its applications. Technician should not use the information that is provided by the antilock braking system tire size selection.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
