1997 GMC Jimmy Tires & wheels Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the tire or wheel system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Tires & wheels reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I WAS ATTEMPTING TO BACK OUT OF MY PARKING SPACE AT MY WORK PLACE PARKING LOT AND BACKED ON TO MY SPARE TIRE. THE SPARE TIRE CABLE BROKE DUE TO CORROSION. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH AND SOMEONE BEHIND ME RUN INTO IT. I HAVE OWNED BLAZERS AND JIMMY'S FOR THE LAST 23 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. CHECKING OUT THIS WEBSITE I NOW KNOW THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM. I WILL TELL EVERYONE THAT I KNOW WHO OWN THESE VEHICLES ABOUT THIS DEFECT. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ALONG THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE I HAD MY 1997 GMC JIMMY IN CRUISE CONTROL. I TAPED TO BRAKE TO TURN OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. AFTER RESUMING THE CRUISE CONTROL THE VEHICLE BEGAN PICKING UP SPEED MUCH TO FAST. I AGAIN TAPPED THE BRAKE AND SHUT OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. I THEN HEARD WHAT SEEMED LIKE A FLAT TIRE, I BEGAN PULLING OFF OF THE ROAD. AS I LOOKED IN THE PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR I COULD SEE FLAMES COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE I SAID TO MY MOTHER THE PASSENGER "THE VEHICLE IS ON FIRE GET OUT" AFTER SHE OPENED THE DOOR THE FLAMES TORNADOED AND CAME INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND STARTED EVERYTHING ON FIRE. I THEN PULLED MY MOTHER OVER THE CONSOLE AND DRAGGED HER AWAY TO SAFETY, THE VEHICLE IN LESS THAN 20 SECONDS WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. *NM

DT: THE CONSUMER OWNED A 1997 GMC JIMMY. HEARD A LOUD CRASHING NOISE WHILE DRIVING. WHEN HE LOOKED IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR HE SAW SOMETHING BOUNCING IN A FIELD. CONSUMER PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THE SPARE TIRE WAS GONE. THE CABLE THAT HELD THE SPARE TIRE UNDER THE VEHICLE BROKE. THIS OCCURRED LAST NIGHT, AND HE HAS NOT YET HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP. ALSO OCCURRED ON CONSUMER'S SON' VEHICLE, 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE. *AK

TRANSFER WILL NOT ENGAGE/DISENGAGE ALL OF THE TIME. TWO GM DEALERSHIPS HAVE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE AND NEITHER CAN FIND THE CAUSE, SUGGESTED THAT I START REPLACING PARTS AND HOPE I GET THE RIGHT ONE. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURED ON SNOW SLICKENED ROADS, THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD NOT ENGAGE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE RENDERING THE VEHICLE RWD ONLY . SECOND INCIDENT OCCURED WHILE DRIVING DOWN A STEEP MOUNTAIN ROAD IN LOW RANGE WHEN I GOT TO HARD PAVED ROAD THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD NOT DISENGAGE.
