Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Grand Design RV, LLC (Grand Design) is recalling certain 2013-2021 Momentum, Solitude, and Reflection recreational vehicles. A 110-volt wire in the refrigerator cabinet may be improperly secured, which could result in the wire contacting the refrigerator cooling unit, causing an electrical arc.
The risk: An electrical arc increases the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace any damaged wiring, and properly secure the wires, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 21, 2022. Owners may contact Grand Design customer service at 1-574-825-9679. Grand Design's number for this recall is 910026.

1,721 units potentially affected
The defect: Grand Design RV, LLC (Grand Design) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Reflection fifth-wheel trailers manufactured September 5, 2013, to June 30, 2015. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with axles rated to 5200 lbs. instead of 6000 lbs. as designed and as listed on the Certification Label. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
The risk: The inaccurate label may result in users overloading their trailer, resulting in axle or tire failure and increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Grand Design will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the trailers and will replace any axle that is only rated to 5200 lbs. with an axle rated to 6000 lbs., free of charge. The recall began on September 10, 2015. Owners may contact Grand Design customer service at 1-574-825-8000 ext. 2015. Grand Design's number for this recall is 910004.

GREASE SEALS ON INNER HUB AND CAP ON OUTER HUB LEAKED GREASE INTO BRAKE SYSTEM AND CONTAMINATED THE BRAKES. COULD BE THE GREASE WAS TOO THIN, OVER PACKED OR GREASE SEALS DEFECTIVE. I HAVE CLEANED AND RESEALED MY BRAKES TWICE. LIPPERT WHO SUPPLIES THE AXLE AND BRAKE ASSEMBLIES TO GRAND DESIGN SENT ME NEW GREASE SEALS ONCE BUT DID NOT AGREE TO PAY FOR MY TIME AND OTHER SUPPLIES. I WAS ABLE TO CATCH IT QUICK ENOUGH THAT THE BRAKE SHOES HAD NOT BEEN CONTAMINATED YET. WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS THERE IS NO BRAKING ACTION ON THE TRAILER DUE TO THE CONTAMINATION THAT INCLUDES GREASE ON THE BRAKE MAGNETS WHICH DOES NOT ALLOW THE BRAKE TO WORK. THIS CONTAMINATION OCCURRED SOMETIME WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. SINCE I HAVE REPLACED THE SEALS AND USED A GOOD WHEEL BEARING GREASE I HAVE NOT HAD A RECURRENCE OF BRAKE FAILURE. THIS CONDITION CAUSES BRAKING LOSS ON THE TRAILER BRAKES THAT RESULTS IN AN UNSAFE CONDITION THAT CAN LEAD TO PROPERTY DAMAGE AND INJURY OR DEATH. GRAND DESIGN AND LIPPERT ARE BOTH AWARE OF THIS CONDITION BUT HAVE ONLY OFFERED TO PROVIDE PARTS TO CORRECT THE CONDITION BUT BASED ON OTHER OWNERS REPORTS OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS HAVE DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
