The defect: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Trike and CVO Trike and 2020-2022 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles. Please refer to Addendum A for specific vehicle model details. Due to a software error, the brake lights may illuminate without the rider applying the brakes. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
The risk: Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Dealers will update the software on Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles. On Trike and CVO Trike motorcycles, a new pressure switch will also be installed. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2022. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. **NHTSA SAFETY DEFECT COMPLAINT** **Vehicle:** 2022 Harley\-Davidson Street Glide CVO **VIN:** [XXX] **Odometer at beginning of trip:** 9,768 miles **Current odometer:** 9,914 miles **Miles traveled during trip:** Approximately 146 miles I am reporting a potentially serious safety defect involving the throttle/grip control system on my 2022 Harley\-Davidson Street Glide CVO\. During a recent trip, I was traveling approximately 65 mph on the freeway when I attempted to apply additional throttle and the motorcycle did not respond to the throttle input\. This created a serious safety situation because I was traveling at highway speed and suddenly had no normal throttle response\. I pulled the motorcycle safely to the side of the roadway\. **The motorcycle remained running and idling\. I did not shut the motorcycle off and I did not turn off the key fob\.** While the motorcycle was still running at idle, I was able to re\-establish the connection/function between the throttle grip and the motorcycle\. Once throttle response was restored, I was able to continue riding\. Approximately 10 miles later, the same loss of throttle response occurred again\. I again pulled over, and while the motorcycle remained running at idle, I was able to re\-establish the throttle/grip connection and regain throttle response\. This problem occurred a total of **six times during the trip**\. On one occasion, I was able to get the throttle to respond by physically moving/sliding the throttle grip back and forth\. I also observed that the throttle grip could move in and out approximately **one\-quarter inch very easily**, which did not appear normal to me\. I was not using cruise control when these incidents occurred\. The motorcycle did not stall or shut down during these incidents\. SERVICE BULLETIN M1679: AFTERMARKET EXHAUST HEADER DEBRIS. PURPOSE: Initial release. This bulletin informs dealers that Harley-Davidson has identified instances of premature engine failure due to abrasive particle wear, specifically from debris inside new aftermarket exhaust headers. Recent evaluations have identified that certain newly manufactured exhaust headers may contain residual hard particles that, if not removed prior to installation, can migrate through the engine system and cause accelerated component wear or severe mechanical damage.
