Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The risk: An owner or operator could rely on the inaccurate information in inflating the tires which could cause under or over inflation which, in turn, could lead to a tire failure or crash.
The remedy: Heartland will notify owners, and dealers will send a replacement label with the correct information, free of charge. The recall began on September 29, 2015. Owners may contact Heartland customer service at 1-574-266-3988.

The defect: Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC (Heartland) is recalling certain model year 2015 Heartland Big Country 3800FL vehicles manufactured October 22, 2014, to December 16, 2014 and 2015 Heartland Big Country 3900FLP vehicles manufactured September 23, 2014, to January 12, 2015, 2015 Heartland Big Horn 3750FL vehicles manufactured September 3, 2014, to January 14, 2015, and Landmark 365 Charleston vehicles manufactured on December 24, 2014. WE HAD NOTICED A CRACK IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE FIBER GLASS IN THE RV, ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE WELDINGS INSIDE THE WALL WHERE FAULTY AND CAME UNWELDED, I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THESE WELDS RE-DONE BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURE WOULD NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THEM AFTER COMPLAINING OF THE ISSUE, IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE RV THE REAR HANGER HAD COME UNWELDED FROM THE FRAME, IT WAS RE-WELDED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE ALSO WITHOUT MANUFACTURER ASSISTANCE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED WHILE TRAVELING ALONG DIFFERENT ROUTES IN THE US BUT THE ISSUE WAS DURING MOVEMENT OF THE CHOACH.

IN OCTOBER, 2016, A YEAR AFTER PURCHASE OF THE TRAILER (NEW), THE FRONT-LEFT TIRE WAS FOUND TO BE LOW ON PRESSURE (TRAILER WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME). TOOK TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO LOCAL TIRE STORE AND THEY FOUND THAT THE RIM WAS CRACKED JUST INSIDE ONE OF THE WHEEL SPOKES. WHEEL WAS REPLACED BY TREDIT TIRE AND WHEEL (ORIGINAL OEM SUPPLIER). EARLY AUGUST OF 2017, WHILE TRAILER WAS STATIONARY AGAIN, FOUND THAT FRONT-RIGHT WHEEL HAD LOW PRESSURE. TOOK ASSEMBLY TO TIRE STORE AND THEY FOUND A SIMILAR CRACK IN A SIMILAR LOCATION ON THAT WHEEL. CONTACTED TREDIT TIRE AND WHEEL AGAIN AND THEY REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE WHEEL ALONG WITH THE OTHER TWO ORIGINAL WHEELS (AT MY REQUEST AND AS A GOODWILL GESTURE) UNDER WARRANTY. NEITHER TIRE DEFLATED WHILE DRIVING OR POSED ANY DANGER. HOWEVER, POSTS ON A USER FORUM REGARDING THIS SPECIFIC WHEEL SEEM TO INDICATE THAT OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR WHEEL DESIGN.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
