2017 Honda CR-V Steering Problems

The steering wheel is sticking while driving down the road. This happens all the time while driving. If you move the steering wheel it will go back to normal.

XXX. Purchased used Honda vehicle from Skyway Honda dealership in [XXX] with known steering issue - although unknown to me until reching highway speeds after driving off lot. 2017 Honda CR-V with Electronic Power Steering gear issue. Vehicle steering causes random movement and potential for over-corretion at highway speeds. NO prior indication of issue at time of purchase as vehicle had been "prepped for sale" at same-brand dealship with other maintenance services performed by service department. There are numerous complaints of same issue on the internet and there is no way dealer was unaware of the issue at time of sale nor was issue disclosed. Issue confirmed by independent service shop, repair cost estimate $5000. Issue related to NHTSA Recall 18V-663. NOT finding vehicle subject to recall, although same issue occurs on other vehicles of this make, model amd year. Have submitted request with Honda; pending: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. While driving my 2017 Honda CR-V, I experienced sudden, unexpected steering behavior consistent with a defective electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox. The steering wheel momentarily became difficult to turn in either direction, with a "sticky" or binding feel followed by a sudden release of resistance, causing oversteer beyond my input. When the wheel was turned to or near full lock, the EPS appeared to apply assist opposite my input, briefly pulling the vehicle unexpectedly to one side. The failure occurred early on most noticably at highway speeds going down windy roads downhill. It became progressively worse in other driving situations over time. This unintended steering behavior reduced vehicle maneuverability and created a serious risk of loss of control, including coming dangerously close to unavoidably crossing the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic. I took the vehicle to Tony Honda in Kona. The dealer diagnosed a defective EPS steering gearbox and replaced the gearbox assembly, performed a four-wheel alignment, and completed the steering angle neutral position learning procedure. The diagnosis and repair exactly match Honda Service Bulletin 18-103 / NHTSA Recall 18V-663 (Honda codes C2N / P2O), covering 2017–2018 Civic and CR-V vehicles for an improperly secured torque sensor magnet that shifts within the gearbox and causes unintended steering input. However, my VIN was not included in the recall, and I paid $2,000 out of pocket for a repair Honda performs free of charge on recalled vehicles with the identical defect. The recall covers only 54 vehicles total, despite multiple owner complaints reporting the same failure on 2017 CR-Vs outside that VIN range. I request that NHTSA investigate expanding Recall 18V-663 to include additional 2017 CR-V VINs with the same defect, and that affected owners who paid for the repair be eligible for reimbursement.

Steering gets "sticky". Brought car to Honda dealer and just by test driving the car they want $6000 to replace bad bearings, steering motor and gearbox. No diagnostic test was done or parts looked at physically. I brought car to a local mechanic who also test drove car and did a diagnostic test and they said the steering motor and gearbox are fine and said nothing wrong with car. Honda has had recall on 2017-2018 crvs due to faulty steering mechanism. This is obviously a known Honda safety issue since Honda dealer knew what problem was just by test driving car and known recall. Why is my car not covered even though Honda said it's out of warranty? Which mechanic do I believe? Can local mechanic diagnostic test pick up the problem as outlined in Honda recall with magnet issue? I don't want to drive an unsafe car yet Honda wants $6k and I don't know for sure if there's a safety issue.

When driving the vehicle the steering wheel sticks when I turn, change lanes, etc. It is most noticeable at highway speeds. If I am moving to the left, the steering wheel sticks and doesn't want to freely move back to the right/straighten up. Obviously the reverse occurs when I go to move to the right- it sticks and pressure is required to straighten the steering wheel. to date the steering wheel has not remained in a stuck position. This presents a major safety concern - if it doesn't move freely back to the desired position there is heightened chance of a traffic accident resulting in damage to my car and other cars involved. Worst case scenario: a serious accident resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO MYSELF as well as any other drivers and/or passengers involved. NOTE: My local Honda dealer reports that there are NO recalls or Service bulletins on my vehicle, based on the VIN number. Other VIN numbers of the same make and model year as mine (2017 CR-V) ARE subject of a recall (Honda Service Bulletin # 18-103, regarding faulty Steering Gearbox.) For that reason I feel my vehicle should be included and repairs made at no cost to me.

- rack and pinion steering has developed 'sticky steering' problem - steering resistance has created steering difficulty and dangerous driving situation - problem has been confirmed by a dealer and estimate for repair over $5,000 - component has not been inspected by manufacturer, wish they would. - no warning lights prior to failure. the steering is sticking, causes driver to over correct. the problem was diagnosed by honda of asheboro nc. the rack and pinion steering was inspected by dealership and determined to be faulty. the problem started 2-3 yrs ago. at first it was very infrequent. i did not realize what was happening until recently when it has gotten much worse although there has been some hondas of the same make and model recalled (NHTSA 18V-663) my honda was not among them. my honda has 61000 miles and the exact same problem!

steering sticking vehicle is available for inspection when the steering sticks you have tendency to over correct Honda dealership has confirmed the problem with no warning first started happening occasionally about 2-3 yrs ago, has just become persistent in last 2 months. 2017 cr-v car has 61000 miles all though this model has had some safety issues in the past( NHTSA recall report 18v-663) they refuse to fix this problem unless I pay them over $5000

The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel momentarily became difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and was diagnosed and determined that the electronic power steering unit was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V663000 (STEERING). While turning the steering wheel to make small adjustments in direction, the steering wheel has some resistance to a point and then loses resistance causing some over steer. I would use the term "sticky steering" to describe it. The problem can be reproduced any time. Symptoms first appeared around January, 2025. No error/warning lights on dash. Vehicle has not been inspected by anyone.

Experienced a continuous "sticky steering" problem at about 50K miles, causing a potentially dangerous condition at moderate to highway speeds. Extra force was required to steer away from the center and a slight clicking noise could be heard when the steering wheel was moved. On 5/31/24, the dealer diagnosed the problem per safety recall service bulletin 18-103 and stated that the EPS steering gearbox needed to be replaced. However, our VIN # was not included in the recall and we had to pay for the repair. The part was on backorder and was not received and installed until 9/10/24.

The car had just 44,242 miles when this problem started on 8/21/2024. Two months later, the problem persists. The safety systems of the car fail upon startup and remain this way for multiple cycles of driving the car. The reality is that I cannot check enough boxes above because the form doesn't allow me. The following warnings all come up at the same time: - Emission System Problem - Brake System Problem - Brake Hold System Problem - Power Steering System (EPS) Problem - Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) Problem - Hill Start Assist Problem - Adaptive Cruise Control Problem - Collision Mitigation System Problem - Road Departure Mitigation System Problem - Electronic Parking Brake Problem - Tire Pressure Monitor Problem Eventually, after some amount of time or some number of restarts, the warnings clear and the safety systems work again. Then, the problem reappears.

I took my car into dealership over a year ago because of the steering. They didn’t have time to look at it so I took it to a repair shop. He drove the car and told me to take it to dealership because of the steering. He could feel the hesitation when driving. He said it should still be under warranty. Took it back to dealership another day . After waiting 2 hours I already knew when the technician came back they were going to charge me with something because it had been a 2 hour wait. He said I had a loose bolt!!! Really!! They didn’t even drive the car. Even after the so called loose bolt I’m still having the same issue. They said the car was no longer under warranty. There’s a clicking noise it makes and I’m scared to drive it long distances. I’ve had to rent a car. I pray every time I drive it. I know it’s going to be expensive to have it fixed. I pray you include this car in your recall.

It is very hard to explain the feeling without driving it. I call it sticky steering. In a curve there would be some resistance when rounding a curve, almost like a nudging feeling, not smooth like other vehicles I would drive. It's like the steering gets stuck in a groove while in the curve and doesn't have the smoothness when adjusting to the curve. A more detailed explanation is attached.

My vehicle steering was clicking and having trouble turning. When I brought it in for a checkup, I was told that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced, and this was not due to wear and tear. Upon further research this exact year and model had several recalls for the exact problem I am having. Due to my VIN not being under the recall directly I was told there was nothing that could be helped and I would need to pay out of pocket for the repairs. My car is 4,000 miles over the extended warranted that I bought and since this is not due to wear and tear of the vehicle, I feel I am due compensation for getting this repaired. I cannot afford this at the moment because I am a single woman who works to live and pay my bills. I got this vehicle for its reviews and research on being known as a safe reliable vehicle. Steering component locks up causing the vehicle to become slightly difficult to make turns and I get clicking sounds from steering column took vehicle to get fixed at independent service center they installed new rack and pinion plus other parts and with labor cost over four thousand dollars paper invoice available upon request I’ve owned Honda 2017 crv lx since 2017 which I bought new. Problem started in the beginning of May of 2024. No warming lights messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the start of problem.
