2018 Honda CR-V Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On March 30, 2026, a safety issue was documented regarding a 2018 Honda CR-V currently located at Crash Champions collision center. The driver-side steering wheel airbag module is entirely missing from the vehicle due to a physical loss/theft, rendering the supplemental restraint system (SRS) completely non-functional and leaving the vehicle unrepairable due to an indefinite OEM manufacturer backorder. Operating this vehicle without a primary steering wheel airbag leaves the driver completely unprotected by safety restraints in a frontal collision, posing an immediate, life-threatening hazard. This critical safety issue, along with the total lack of replacement part availability, has been officially confirmed and documented by Crash Champions, where the vehicle has been grounded for three consecutive months. Additionally, a State Farm insurance representative has physically inspected the vehicle and opened formal comprehensive repair claim #[XXX]. There were no warning lamps or symptoms prior to the incident, as this represents a total physical loss of the component; however, the dashboard SRS/Airbag warning light is now actively illuminated due to the missing module. Widespread manufacturer supply-chain backorders on these critical safety components prevent the vehicle from being returned to a crashworthy condition, leaving it indefinitely inoperable from a safety standpoint. 1. Sometimes when my wife get in the passenger seat the airbag sensor light stays on indicating the the airbag is off. 2. Often when driving with adaptive cruise control on, the car suddenly brakes hard without cause . Sometime when a car in front of me turns right and sometimes if I pass a car parked on the street it will also brake hard for no reason.

I have been waiting for an airbag for my 2018 Honda CRV since November 2025. I have made contact with Honda Motors US Corporate offices 2 months ago and they are failing to give me an estimate as to when my airbag will be sent to my dealership in Chicago. They can not give me any concrete information as to when the part is even going to be manufactured. For the last 3 weeks they have given me zero concrete information. They are not providing me with a loaner car. My car has been unusable for over 6 months which is and the customer service representative suggested that I operate the car without an air bag.

On October 2025 there was a mass incident in different areas of Queens NY in were airbags from Honda CRVs were stolen. The vehicle was sent to a body shop to have the airbag replaced but American Honda Motor Co., Inc does not have any available to distribute. We have reached out to them but there respond has been " We apologize for any inconvenince or delay this matter has caused you. Currently the part(s) ETA is to be determined." No dealer has extra parts and the part cant be found anywhere else. We are looking to get this resolved being that 3 months have now passed and there is no "ETA" of the part being available for costumers. It is not something that should be happening to a loyal costumer that has purchased a vehicle without having the option to get parts (as per American Honda they are not out of stock and they are manufacturing but they are just not available for distibution). In cases like this parts should be available to be replaced in cases of an emergency, let alone a safety part like an airbag.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while sitting at a stop light, another motorist hit her vehicle on the front passenger side. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact nor the other driver sustained any injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was driven to an independent body shop where it was repaired. Since the accident, the contact stated that several warning lights would flash on the instrument panel either upon start of the vehicle or while driving at various speeds, . The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where a diagnostic showed that the fuel injector needed to be replaced. Prior to owning the vehicle, the contact was informed that a recall(recall unknown) was performed on the vehicle that was related to the fuel injector. A software was performed to repair the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 73900.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the vehicle was stalling and losing motive power. The vehicle was able to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact then stated that while his wife was driving at approximately 30 MPH and merging onto a road, the vehicle stalled, she lost control of the steering wheel, and she crashed into a ditch where the vehicle came to a stop. The contact stated that the air bags had failed to deploy and that his wife was hospitalized with neck, shoulder, and back injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the undercarriage, radiator, oil drain pan, and additional unknown components needed to be replaced. The contact referenced the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V215000; however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure was 15,000.

I was having multiple electrical issues with the car, malfunctioning radio, flashing etc. I had it checked out at Mahwah Honda and they stated no issues. Last week I was in an accident in which my car was deemed totaled. As I was crossing the intersection a car sped through a red light traveling at a high speed hitting my passenger side. This caused the passenger air bags to deploy (I was traveling alone) and the impact caused me to hit another car across the roadway. The driver side air bags did not deploy even though I hit another car. I do not understand why my air bags did not go off and do not recall if the on star worked as well. I do not know if this is all related to the electrical issues I reported which Honda dismissed.

I WAS IN A COLLUSION WITH THE 2018 CR-V AND NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN THE COLLISION OCCURRED. I WAS GETTING READY TO TRAVEL THROUGH AN INTERSECTION WHEN A SEMI TRUCK STRUCK THE CR-V ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE NEAR THE TIRE. THE RATE OF SPEED AND IMPACT SHOULD HAVE CAUSED THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY.
