Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I am reporting multiple factory defects on my 2024 Honda CR-V, led by a severe, confirmed steering safety defect commonly known as 'sticky steering' where the steering wheel sticks/notches while driving and requires excessive force to correct, causing dangerous lane swerving. The authorized Honda dealership confirmed the steering gearbox has failed and requires replacement but the necessary parts are backordered indefinitely, forcing me to leave the unsafe vehicle at the dealership. Furthermore, the vehicle suffers from two additional major unresolved warranty issues recorded under the same Repair Order: a defective door weather stripping seal that has peeled off and detached from the door frame, compromising cabin weather sealing, and a strong, musty mold odor emitted from the AC system on low fan speeds that poses an air quality and health concern for occupants. Due to this unaddressed steering safety hazard, additional factory defects, and backordered parts, the vehicle remains out of service at the dealership (visited on 11 July, noticed that it's unsafe driving and returned the vehicle to service on 16 Jul) and no replacement car has been provided.

This is the third time this vehicle has experienced wheel lock-up during braking. The first occurrence was over three months ago, while one driver was driving alone. The second occurrence was about one month ago, with a different driver, and a passenger was present who also witnessed the wheels locking; no collision resulted those two times. Both involved the wheels locking during braking and a loss of steering control. On the third occurrence, on June 25, while driving on the freeway, the vehicle ahead braked suddenly. The driver applied the brakes and they initially responded, allowing the driver to slow and avoid hitting the vehicle in front. Immediately afterward, the wheels locked up and the driver lost the ability to steer or maneuver. The anti-lock braking system did not prevent the wheels from locking. Because the vehicle could not be controlled, it was struck from behind by a following vehicle. This defect has now occurred three times over approximately three months, with two different drivers, and has resulted in a collision. It is a recurring, dangerous loss of vehicle control.

I was pulling into a parking space at church. I had my foot lightly on the brake as the idle speed was sufficient to enter the parking space. When I pressed on the brake to stop the car completely the brakes failed and the car lurched forward about 10 ft and hit the church building damaging my front left bumper, buckling the hood and components behind the bumper.

Driving a Honda 2024 crv hybrid ,I was pulling into a front row parking spot and braking and as the car just about was going to stop it surged forward turning in the direction I had just pulled in from and accelerated instead of continuing to brake . I kept my foot on the brake hoping it was stopping , but continued to accelerate running over a sign, then a light post and then through the plate glass frame of the building . Finally coming to rest as it fully entered the building . The vehicle then emitted some smoke from underneath and the building was evacuated. Fortunately no one was in the room at the time the car came through. No injuries thank goodness . No warning signals or any assistive braking was in play . Just my foot on the brake from the time I entered the parking spot . The vehicle was towed to a Honda collision shop where it will have a damage estimate done and then inspected by the car manufacturer. No analysis has been performed at this time .

On April 25, 2026, while the vehicle was stopped at a red light on [XXX] , the vehicle suddenly became inoperable and displayed multiple warning messages and warning lights. The warning messages included “Brake System Problem” and “Auto Idle Stop System Problem.” Additional ABS/VSA, battery/electrical, and system warning lights were also displayed. The vehicle was occupied at the time, including children, and this created a serious safety concern on a major roadway because the vehicle could not be driven or safely moved under its own power. Police responded to the scene, Honda Roadside Assistance was contacted, and the vehicle was towed to an authorized Honda dealer. The suspected affected systems include the brake system, electrical system, battery/charging system, ABS/VSA system, Auto Idle Stop system, and related control modules. The vehicle is currently available for inspection at an authorized Honda dealer. The issue has not yet been fully diagnosed or confirmed by the dealer. The dealer advised that the battery may need to be replaced before diagnosis can continue. However, the battery may have discharged because the vehicle remained in a fault state with warning lights/system alerts active after the original brake/electrical failure. Therefore, the dead battery may be a consequence of the original failure, not necessarily the root cause. There were no known prior warning signs before this incident. The warning messages and lamps appeared at the time of the failure. A full diagnosis is pending. I am concerned that this brake/electrical/system failure could happen again while driving or stopped in traffic and create a safety risk. I have a Honda 2024 CRV Hybrid. After 18 Months the rear and front brake rotors went bad. I hear a metal screach on the car wheels without using the brages. Dealer Honda states that rotors are under warranty for the first 12 Months and charging $1480 to resurface front rotors and replace rear. He is attributing this to an excessive wear and tear due to high corrosive weather in Florida. He also added that even after replacing the rotors, it's not garatee the new ones will last longer than 12 months. The car has only 11000 Miles and has always been in a closed Garage. This should lead to change Honda's warranty to cover what is clearly a defect.

I was pulling into my son's driveway to park, and my vehicle did not stop when using the brakes. I struck the rear of his vehicle parked in the driveway. When put in reverse, my vehicle would not stop when using the brakes. My vehicle crossed the street, hit a tree, and eventually stopped when it hit a house. A video of the incident was caught on my son's ring door camera. I will submit screen shots of the video since the ability to submit a video is not an option.

my 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid regarding the vehicle's stability when shifted into "Park." Upon selecting "Park" and releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle exhibits an excessive rocking motion, surging forward and backward approximately four times before coming to a rest. This is not the standard "settling" common in automatic transmissions; it is a repeated oscillatory movement that suggests a failure in the parking engagement or a lack of coordination with the brake system. This creates a safety hazard, as the vehicle does not feel securely anchored, increasing the risk of a roll-away or injury to passengers exiting the vehicle.

My Honda CRV has braked by itself when I am driving, even when theres nothing iin front of me. The break warning signal also pops up for no reason This has happened many times, and I have my kids in the car. The dealer told me they can’t find anything, but the problem keeps happening. I am scared this will cause a crash. Especially having my 2 year old and 3 month old i get scared to drive it --- If you want it even shorter or more personal, I can rewrite it again.

* Manual and automatic break - both failed. Yes, it is available for inspection. * It was a collision between 2 cars. Our car break got jammed ,it hit other car. * We visited Envision Honda of Milpitas - Honda dealers. For Multi-Point inspection after incident. I have attached the report. The problem was not reproduced by them, but we faced the issue of break getting jammed and automatic break system not working. I am scared of driving my car in future. * Yes, the vehicle is inspected by Honda dealers and Geico insurance. They are not accepting intermitted break system failure. * There were no warning lamps or messages. Just break stopped working. We were driving in snow mode in Honda CRV. It was snowy road. We were going downhill. And the manual and automatic , both break system failed at the same time * The Honda Dealers didn't share EDR (event data recorder) data to us. They charged us 300$ and did Multi-point inspection and handed over the car back.

Driver of the vehicle was traveling about 50 miles per hour, Multiple warning notices appeared on the dashboard ranging from Vehicle Stability Assist System Problem, Collision Mitigation Braking System problem, All Wheel Drive System Problem, Electronic Power Steering Problem, Electric Parking Brake System Problem, Brake System Problem, etc., approximately 16 error messages. The front end wobbled, Brakes were mushy, Steering was difficult as if the power steering ceased working. Was able to safely pull off the road. Vehicle was towed to dealer for diagnosis and repair. Dealer pulled codes from the ODB port and it displayed multiple warnings. See attached list of codes from the Dealer Dealer checked multiple systems but was unable to diagnose the cause. Dealer re-set the codes and sent the car home. This could have been a significant safety issue if the event had occurred under different circumstances. Request investigation into Honda to determine if this issue has occurred elsewhere, determined a root cause, and if the manufacturer needs to issue a recall for all affected vehicles.

The vehicle is a 2024 Honda CR-V EX-L with approximately 13,000 miles, purchased at Gillman Honda in Houston, TX on May 29, 2024. The issue involves the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) activating without any obstacle present. The first incident occurred in February 2025 at around 11,000 miles while driving on a feeder road at ~25 mph. The vehicle suddenly braked to a complete stop even though the road was clear. There were cars behind me, and although they stopped in time, it created a serious risk of rear-end collision. Had I been traveling at a higher speed and the car braked completely, this could have caused the vehicle to flip or lose control. The second incident occurred on September 4, 2025 at ~13,000 miles while driving on a busy street at approximately 40 mph. The vehicle suddenly braked very hard for no reason, but did not fully stop — instead, it resumed immediately. It felt as if the car “took a screenshot,” braking sharply then continuing. This was especially dangerous since I was traveling at a higher speed, and vehicles behind me could have easily collided with mine. Both incidents put my safety and the safety of other drivers at risk. The vehicle was brought to Gillman Honda on September 16, 2025. The dealer acknowledged the safety concern and kept the car for inspection. On September 19, 2025, the service representative confirmed they had contacted Honda corporate and opened a case because of the seriousness of the issue. The car is still being held at the dealership pending corporate guidance. No warning lights, error messages, or prior alerts appeared before either incident. This appears consistent with a known problem that has been reported by many Honda owners in recent years involving unintended braking by the CMBS system. The defect makes the vehicle unsafe to operate, and at this point we no longer feel safe driving it.

The 2023+ Honda CRV hybrid model have paddles on the steering wheel that increase and decrease the strength of regenerative braking. I use this feature often on our 2024 hybrid model. The issue arises when increasing the strength to the second or third (highest) level. The braking force at these levels should trigger the brake lights to illuminate, but they do not. Often I see drivers brake late behind me because my vehicle is braking with noticeable strength, but the driver behind me can’t tell. So they slow late and very close to my vehicle’s rear bumper. Honda should recall the hybrids and retrofit the brake lights to activate when regenerative braking is increased to the second or third level. Just as Tesla brake lights activate when their regen braking system works by releasing the accelerator, Honda’s should activate when turned up to the higher levels.

I was driving on an empty two lane road going 35-40 mph. The car braked suddenly and the BRAKE warning light came on but no sound. On the way to the service department at the dealership it happened again, only this time I was going 20 mph and in traffic. There was a car in front of me at least 3 car lengths but was moving. I heard the brakes of the car behind me squeal as he avoided hitting me. No sound from my car, the brake light came on, I also put my foot on the brake thinking maybe the car sensed an encroachment I didn’t notice. But there was none, so I released the brake before coming to a complete stop. The service department inspected the system and could not reproduce or confirm any issues. There was no warning sound, the brake came on at the same time as the light. There was no warning, the light came on at the same time as the brake

2024 Honda CR-V VIN [XXX] Phantom Braking Car has experienced phantom braking numerous times since March 2024 when new. Initially occurred within one week of driving the new vehicle. Did not report it to dealer at first as we thought it was something that we were doing, or some sensitivity that the car typically exhibited. At random times car decelerates quickly as if pressing on brakes, or losing engine power (fuel supply, ignition, etc.), or downshifting quickly. After a few seconds car can be accelerated and resumes speed. In virtually every case it has occurred on dry, clear roads with no vehicles or obstructions ahead. Car, cameras and sensors were clean. Occurs when accelerating either slowly or rapidly. Occurs when entering a highway from an ON ramp. Occurs at 10 mph or 70 mph. Driver is not touching the paddle downshifter. Sometimes deceleration occurs multiple times within seconds after the previous - 2 to 3 times. Rapid slowing does not occur when in cruise control, or when manually increasing speed in cruise control. In all cases Red Brake warning light in instrument panel does not flash and there is nothing immediately in front of car. This condition is extremely dangerous, especially when there are vehicles behind, and they are not expecting my vehicle to slow rapidly. Occurs when accelerating to pass a car ahead. Or when trying to accelerate onto a highway to match speed of approaching traffic. We are always in fear of being hit from behind by unsuspecting drivers. We’ve come to expect the hesitation/braking to happen and drive even more defensively. A log of events is available. _______________________________ Dec. 21, 2024 Picked up car from servicing at Honda City, So. Portland, ME. Went back and discussed incident with Service Manager. They suggested keeping the car for an extended period to have technician drive it and try to reproduce problem. January 15, 2025Met with Berlin City Service Manager to discuss phantom braking again. Braking occurs absolutely randomly. This happened about 6-7 times starting from about 5500 miles, at absolutely different speeds. I slow down to reduce speed, then the system starts warning with a BRAKE signal and after that suddenly stops, to a complete stop, although this is absolutely not necessary, because the front car is very far. I was hit in the bumper once. I have a video of how it did it on the highway. The last time got into the accident with the car, as the hit didn't make any damage to the car, did not report to police, took the car to dealership, but was advised to change the setting, but it did not change anything still the random braking exist.

The contact owns a 2024 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving uphill at 10 MPH, the "Brake Issue, contact dealer" "Brakes Needs Servicing," warning message illuminated. The vehicle independently accelerated and crashed into a tree. The air bags did not deploy. The contact injured their head on the steering wheel. The contact also received bruises to their neck and knees that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was able to be driven the short distance home. The contact then stated that they later had the vehicle towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery had failed, however, they did not provide a diagnosis for the brake failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 2,024.
