2025 Honda Odyssey Powertrain (other) Problems

After driving for awhile, stopped in a store for a minute and came out and my van barely started. Made my next stop a minute down the road, and when I came out the car wouldnt turn over. Let it sit for a minute and still heard the start click once and nothing. Let it sit for 10 15 mins then tried to start it and it worked. Had battery and alternator tested at Auto Parts store and both ok. After reading some forums and researching, I see that it is an overdraw from the auto start feature. I also saw the model of starters on my year of van were only used one year, so it seems like its a problem Honda has known about. Im seeing a lot of these issues, and the guy at the auto parts store even knows about it, so it is something that needs a recall. Clearly these starters are a problem. My van just rolled over 36k miles because we drive a lot so its not under warranty still.

Incident Description: The vehicle entered an Auto Idle Stop event at a traffic light and stalled completely instead of restarting when the brake pedal was released. The red battery warning light illuminated, and the vehicle had to be shifted into Park and the ignition key cycled multiple times to eventually achieve a slow, sluggish crank and engine restart in active traffic. Another vehicle was almost going to hit me from behind since red light turned to green when this happened, and that driver from far behind was thinking that my vehicle will start moving and did not slow down. That driver started honking and yelling. It was scary since I had 3 small kids in my vehicle. Dealership Diagnostics: I dropped off the vehicle at a local Honda Dealership to get this checked. From the invoice/service document, I see this note: Cause: Took several attempts but was able to duplicate concern of when vehicle goes into auto start stop it will not always restart, will have to cycle key. Noticed when it did restart it is slow to crank. Battery tested good, and had good reserve voltage. Used tech line as a resource and found this issue is caused by starter not having enough voltage to properly engage auto stop start. rec replacing starter. Correction: Replaced starter.

With idle start/stop enabled, there have been multiple occasions where the system has not restarted, causing my wife to almost get into an accident with my two young daughters in the car. Honda has looked at it on two occasions and claims there is no issue. However when researching this online, it has let me to find a NHTSA investigation, as well as hundreds of complaints about this are found online.

The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal and stopping at a traffic light, the gear shifter independently shifted to park(P). The vehicle was turned off and restarted, and the vehicle then operated as intended. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnostic result was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The insurance company had not been contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 26,000.

Once the vehicle's auto idle stop system engaged at a traffic light, and the engine failed to restart automatically leaving us stranded in active traffic. We usually disable the system but forgot that time. It has also required multiple manual push-button attempts to start from a parked position at home and in public parking lots. The vehicle was brought to an authorized Honda dealership for this issue. The dealer stated they could not replicate the symptom, diagnosed it as a low battery, and charged the battery. The issue persists. Failing to restart at a traffic light creates an immediate rear-end collision hazard and leaves occupants vulnerable in the middle of active intersections.

Mother single , sole support 4 babies and going through divorce needed a vehicle right away . Carvana rated this car 94 after its 150 pt inspection . It was noted that it was in an accident. Driving the babies on interstate the Pilar flew off, later on still on interstate , ck engine light came on, then steering warning, brake warning and sudden loss of speed . Car would not accelerate beyond 40 miles per hour . Day 32 car was taken to Honda where she found she could not open the hood. Car was then sent to Gerber A very quick look found upper tie bar was “buckled” the dipstick bent and radiator “floating” also impact bar was missing or bent … read Gerber report for clarification , told with hood misaligned and latch bent way back hood could possibly fly up and no front end protection in a collision. I am horrified and begging for emergency swap… they are claiming cosmetic … BUCKLED upper tie bar?? They are waiting on a more detailed report gambling with 5 lives or more ! I loaned this child7000 to help lower payments . I wanted her to have a safe vehicle to drive. This is undrivable yet she cannot afford rental.. why are they waiting for detailed when we know it was wrecked January 13 2026 and obviously NOT a 94 and safety inspection 150 was clearly fraud I would never have let her and those babies buy a wrecked piece of junk! I am scared EVERYTIME she gets behind the wheel. The amount of time is taking away from her new job. She is sole support please help emergency swap now

The vehicle has an Auto Idle Stop no-restart/stalling issue. While stopped at a traffic light/intersection, Auto Idle Stop engaged. When attempting to proceed, the vehicle did not resume driving normally, shifted itself into Park, dashboard warning lights flashed, and the only way to move again was to turn the vehicle completely off and restart it. This left the vehicle disabled in traffic and created a serious rear-end collision/intersection hazard. The issue was confirmed by a Honda dealer on 06/26/2026 at approximately 11,804 miles. The repair order states that code P07AF was stored and that a snapshot showed a drop in cranking voltage due to a failing starter. The dealer advised that the starter must be replaced, but stated the starter is on severe backorder. The vehicle remains unrepaired. Honda customer service case #16464445. The vehicle is a low-mileage 2025 Honda Odyssey purchased new in April 2025 and used as a family vehicle to transport children. Prior Honda service records show maintenance was performed at approximately 9,800 miles, including a multi-point inspection, and the battery terminals/cables/mountings and battery condition were checked OK at that time. This appears related to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004, “No Restart After Auto Start/Stop Engages,” involving 2018–2025 Honda Odyssey vehicles. Our 2025 Honda Odyssey has now experienced three failures for the same defect, including two starter replacements within two weeks, without resolution. The most recent repair, overseen by Honda Tech Line, happened after the vehicle died June 2 while in traffic and it had to be towed to the local dealership using our insurance. On June 15 the vehicle died again, just five days after I picked it up with assurance that this issue was resolved, and it is was towed back to the dealership by Honda Towing. The repeated part swaps, without root‑cause diagnosis, clearly have not resolved the issue and have left us with a one‑year‑old vehicle that is unreliable and unsafe to operate. My minivan has failed in the middle lane of a major road while idling at a stoplight twice and in a parking lot once. All incidents were within 15 minutes of driving and 5 miles from my home. This is a critical safety defect and the repeated failures place this vehicle within the criteria that may qualify under Kentucky’s lemon law. We have not made that claim yet, but we are formally documenting the repair history and escalation. ———- -Starter failed and was replaced twice. This could have something to do with the auto start/idle system. -our one year old van is unsafe and unreliable. It died near a major intersection while idling at a stop light. I was in the middle lane and it wouldn’t restart for 5 minutes. I was very afraid my children and I would be rear ended. -the dealership has confirmed the problem, but they not been able to recreate the scenario despite it happening on 3 separate occasions. -Honda Tech Line has been directing the local dealer what to do after the first starter replacement failed. When I come to a full stop and the Idle Stop feature engages, sometimes the engine will not restart. I get a message saying to press the button to start the engine, but it does not start after doing that either, so I have to shut the car off and restart it. There are a bunch of lights that flash when this happens.

When the engine shuts off while braking at a light/stop sign etc occasionally the car will fail to turn the engine back on and the car will go in to park and the only way to get in to drive is to restart the car. This happens once or twice a month.

Engine fails to restart after the Auto Idle System shuts it down, leaving vehicle stranded in traffic. The issue is sudden and unpredictable, and may not appear in inspection. A stalled car in live traffic is a safety concern. The vehicle is at a dealer for diagnosis and repair. No warning appeared before the problem began happening. (About 5 times in 2.5 months.) Sometimes when it occurs, a brief error message seems to appear on the dash, but quickly disappears. It usually takes cycling through restarting the car to get going again. Not a good environment to stop and take video, although it's almost impossible to record.

Had the starter & battery replaced November 2025. It’s now June 2026 and it still is having trouble starting. It will sometimes not start and then just make a clicking noise and all the lights in the dash come on and air, but engine won’t well start. Then you take foot off break, then turn it off and try again it will start. The dealership ran tests and said everything was fine. When we first had this problem the car would stall out and shut off in traffic.

Vehicle has stopped running multiple times while at stop signs or traffic lights when engine is at idle and not running. The vehicle has to be restarted to go after shutting off while in traffic. It is very concerning when this happens in live traffic. The dealer has had the vehicle for days and were not able to replicate what happened. Asked me for more information on what was being used when it happened. They say they ran tests and were unable to get any codes to show what might have happened. The only thing I have seen was reports that the idle stop feature was unavailable previously. Not sure when that happened? This has happened at least 6 different times, last time being May 8th 2026.

Screen barely works, sometimes it takes forever to turn on sometimes it just wont switch or load or it just stays on a black screen 8. After taking it for the who knows how many times for the popping sound they deemed the steering column unsafe to drive and replaced that and they had the vehicle for almost a month because they couldn't get the parts, in that time they even admitted they felt the transmission issues 9. Starter was replaced after complaining for months about it dying at lights or stops and it being rough to start 10. Popping sound from the axle when you go over anything or turn the wheel 11. Back passenger door wont shut it just keeps popping back open 12. Doors dont lock when you walk away 13. Passenger doors will unlock but driver side doesn't 14. The passenger door got stuck and we had to crawl through and push it open 15. Transmission gets stuck and wont go over 30 and the rpms go up but the speed doesn't move, it shifts hard and makes a thud sound, and the engine is crazy loud 16. Has a crazy vibration coming from it 17. Will brake on its own with nothing around it 18. Was switching to sport mode on its own in the middle of driving 19. The new steering column was getting stuck and acting up and it was trying to merge in to the other lane but lane assist off 0. We had an exhaust leak 21. Pieces of trim with vents broken inside 22. Pieces of trim falling off 23. Weather stripping for the passenger back door just fell off, still waiting on them to replace that 24. The fan is extremely loud 25. When putting in to park, or drive you have to really hit the buttons because they aren't switching easy

The vehicle's auto idle stop system is malfunctioning, resulting in the engine failing to restart from a complete stop. This total failure has occurred on five separate occasions, including while stopped in active traffic intersections. Prior to these total restart failures, the vehicle showed the following symptoms: 1) Initially, the vehicle experienced rough engine idling, abnormal vibrations, and a raw gasoline odor after driving. 2) This progressed to a noticeable delay between releasing the brake pedal and the engine attempting to ignite, during which the starter sometimes sounded strained. 3) This has culminated in the current defect where the engine shuts off normally when stopped at an intersection, but completely fails to immediately restart when the brake is released. This defect completely immobilizes the vehicle in active traffic lanes, exposing us to an immediate and severe risk of a rear-end collision. When the engine fails to restart, the vehicle locks the transmission out of drive and triggers a warning on the dashboard. It is a highly hazardous situation, especially with a lot of distracted drivers on the roadways.

The auto-idle off feature - yes The stall happened in a situation where cars behind me would have expected me to start moving and could have resulted in a rear-end collision. Dear NHTSA, I am submitting a safety complaint regarding my 2025 Honda Odyssey, which has been diagnosed with a transmission failure requiring full replacement due to faulty internal seals. The vehicle is less than one year old, and this type of premature failure raises serious safety concerns. I first became aware that something might be wrong during a routine oil change on November 11, when technicians noticed signs that the transmission might be leaking or malfunctioning. I continued to monitor the vehicle, and on November 28, I was informed that the entire transmission must be replaced due to faulty seals inside the transmission assembly. A critical component like the transmission should not fail this early in the life of the vehicle, and a structural defect such as faulty seals may indicate a manufacturing issue that could affect other vehicles of the same model and year. Information from the dealership: SHEEHY HONDA OF ALEXANDRIA Diagnosed transmission failure caused by faulty seals Recommended repair: Complete transmission replacement Explanation: Premature failure of internal transmission seals leading to fluid loss and unsafe operation Repairs completed so far: Diagnostic inspections confirming failure This vehicle is used to transport children, and a sudden transmission failure presents a significant safety risk. For a new vehicle to require a full transmission replacement within its first year of use is highly concerning. I came to a stop at a stop sign. Then "auto off" shut off the engine. Next, the vehicle went into park. A message came on screen telling me to press the brake and the start button. Doing so had no effect. Cars behind me started honking. After repeatedly stabbing the start button and opening and closing my driver's door, the vehicle eventually rebooted, and the engine started as normal. This caused a dangerous situation where other cars went into opposing traffic to get around me.

The idle stop system is malfunctioning. I had it inspected once previously and now trying to get it inspected again for the same occurring issue. The dealership continues to tell me to turn off the idle stop feature on the vehicle. My safety was put at risk because of the vehicle stalling and not kicking back on while being stopped at a redlight on a busy 4 lane highway multiple times now. The first time, I was by myself. The second time, my 8-month-old was in the vehicle with me. This causes a lot of panic as there are impatient drivers around me since I am unable to move my vehicle. I fear that this could happen on a freeway if there was construction, an accident or even while trying to turn in an intersection and getting hit because I can’t move my vehicle and often have my two small children with me. The first time the idle stop stalled, it occurred twice in a week. The first time was rather quick, and the engine kicked over quickly so I did not think anything more of it. The second time which happened a few days later (9/17/25), took about 5 minutes to get the engine going again and moving on the road (4 lane highway). I took it back to my local Honda dealership where they performed a diagnostic test and discovered the battery had dipped down to 7.22V when trying to restart, the battery failed the battery test and ended up being replaced with a new battery. The idle stop issue has now happened for a third time (10/21/25), with the same issues occurring and I am waiting to be able to get back into Honda. The vehicle has only been looked at by my local Honda dealership. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other notifications prior to the failure. I received a warning on the dashboard after the events occurred on how to start the vehicle. This is very disappointing as a new Honda owner. My husband and I decided on Honda over other car companies due to their reliability and this has now become a constant worry.

On June 14th 2025, I reversed up my driveway, uphill, shifted to neutral to allow the vehicle to roll downhill a bit so I could straighten it out. While rolling forward, the transmission was jammed into park with no warning or interaction from me, causing my head to sling forwards in a whiplash fashion from the abrupt change in inertia. This was both harmful to me, to the transmission, and is a major defect. Engaging a transmission into park while moving is reckless, harmful and extremely dangerous. The failing component is most likely the transmission control unit and is available for inspection upon request, but has not been inspected by anyone other than myself. The problem is reproducible by me.
