2015 Hyundai Genesis Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I have completed 2 of these recalls through factory Hyundai while stationed in South Korea for military service. I have the paperwork, and I'm trying to get the NHTSA to clear my vin of these two repairs in order to import my vehicle back to the US. Can you please help me?

The DAB module assembly (air bag system) driver's side has to be replaced due to failure. Only warning was a creaking sound from the steering column when turning. Although I have an extended warranty, never been in an accident, and the car is only 6 years old with 44,000 miles, the extended warranty for the air bags is only for 5 years. The cost to replace the DAB is over $900.00. I feel strongly that Hyundai should cover the cost.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Genesis. The contact stated while the headlights were on the auto setting, the headlights occasionally flickered on and off independently. The contact also stated that the air bag warning light also inadvertently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and was diagnosed with the wiring harness needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that an engineer would be sent out to inspect the vehicle. The engineer was not heard from and the vehicle was not inspected. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

THE AIRBAG IS DEFECTIVE AND WILL NOT DEPLOY. NO IDEA AS TO THE CAUSE AS THIS WAS A RECENTLY PURCHASED CAR. NO OUTSTANDING AIRBAG RECALLS AND YET NO REPORTED ACCIDENTS AND NO HISTORY OF AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. THE DEALER WHO SOLD US THE CAR ASSUMES A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS TO SHUT OFF AS WELL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON ANOTHER OCCASION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS WERE REPLACED IN 2015. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MITSUBISHI POTAMKIN OF MANHATTAN, NEW YORK WHERE THE HEADLIGHT FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED; THEREFORE, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WITH THE AIR BAG, BUT NOT THE HEADLIGHTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,717.

Crash reported

THE VEHICLE, A 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS 5.0 IN RELATIVELY SLOW MOTION ENTERING A PARKING LOT, WAS INVOLVED IN A PASSENGER SIDE IMPACT ACCIDENT ON 10/6/15. THE OTHER CAR SUSTAINED FRONTAL DAMAGE AND WAS TOWED BUT THE GENESIS REMAINED DRIVABLE. FOUR (4) DAYS LATER, ON 10/10/15, WHILE IN MOTION, THE PASSENGER SIDE AND CURTAIN AIRBAGS SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED.

NEW 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS 3.8 V6, DRIVEN ONLY 6407 MILES IN 11 MONTHS, SHOWED AIRBAG MALFUNCTION WARNING DISPLAY. CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION AND PARKED INSIDE A COVERED CAR GARAGE BEFORE GOING ON VACATION. AFTER RETURNING FROM THE VACATION, NOTICED THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT. TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTHORIZED HYUNDAI DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED AND SAID THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT CONTROL ELECTRONIC BOARD HAS FAILED AND NEEDS IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT. HYUNDAI DEALER ALSO ADVISED ME NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT THE FIX AND PROVIDED A LONER CAR AND SENT ME HOME. IT TOOK THREE DAYS FOR THE DEALER TO ORDER THE AIRBAG CONTROL ELECTRONIC BOARD- PART NO: SPO 95910-B1000 AND TO FIX THE ISSUE (B1620 INTERNAL FAULT-REPLACED SRSCM). I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED THAT A KEY SYSTEM LIKE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT CONTROL UNIT COULD FAIL IN A HIGH-END, LUXURY CAR LIKE HYUNDAI GENESIS THAT TOO WHILE IT WAS PARKED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GARAGE. IT IS SCARY TO IMAGING AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT CONTROL UNIT FAILING WHILING DRIVING THROUGH MOJAVE DESERT AND AIR BAG DEPLOYING ON YOUR FACE WITHOUT ANY REASON. HYUNDAI SHOULD CRITICALLY FOLLOW AND EXAMINE AIRBAG WARNING ISSUE.

ENTERING INTO A RIGHT TURN LANE THE VEHICLE MAY HAVE GRAZED A CURB. IMMEDIATE EXPLOSION & BOTH RIGHT SIDE AIR BAGS BLEW CAUSING MINOR INJURIES TO PASSENGERS. THE CAR IS NEW, APPROX. 985 MILES AND THE TIRES HAD BEEN REPLACED THAT MORNING WITH MICHELINS UNDER A TIRE EXCHANGE PROGRAM. THERE IS NO EXTERNAL BODY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER THE REAR AXLE APPEARS TO BE BENT. WHY WOULD AIR BAGS DEPLOY BY BUMPING A CURB AT LOW SPEED?
