What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 Hyundai Sonata, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was previously illuminated. Additionally, the seat belt warning light was activated for the passenger’s seat while the seat was unoccupied. The contact was concerned that the safety restraint system (SRS) might not function correctly in a crash. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V161000 (AIR BAGS); however, the VIN was not associated with the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000.
The airbag warning light in my car is always ON, it won't go OFF. It was repaired by Hyundai service center under an extended warranty a few years back but now they said that they won't fix it again.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN I EXIT MY CAR AND MY HEADLIGHT ARE TURNED TO OFF POSITION AND CLOSE DOOR, MY RUNNING LIGHTS STAY ON. WHICH I HAVE JAD TO CHARGR MY BATTERY DUE YO THIS. SO ER THOUGHT IT WAS THE HEADLAMP SWITCH. STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. SO LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM AND FOUND A COUPLE DIFFERENT FORUMS STATING THAT THIS IS A RELAY PROBLEM. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THIS RELAY IS INTEGRATED INTO THE FUSE BOX. SO IN ORDER FPR THIS PROBLEM TO BE FIXED I AM TOLD I HAVE TO REPLACE A FUSE BOX. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THOS ISSUE. THIS HAPPENES EVERY TIME I EXIT MY VECHICLE AFTER DRIVING IT. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. 2. MY DRIVERS SIDE AND PASSENGER VISORS DO NOT STAY UP. I HAVE GOTTEN HIT IN THE HEAD. THIS SHOULD ALSO BE ON RECALL.
THE SUN VISOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WILL NOT STAY IN THE UP POSITION. IT CREATES A BLIND SPOT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ENTER TRAFFIC OR MAKE RIGHT HAND TURNS. THE DRIVERS SIDE IS NOW BEGINNING TO DROP AS WELL. IT WILL DROP ABOUT AN INCH AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WILL DROP DOWN EVEN FURTHER BLOCKING MY VISION AND STARTLING ME.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Brake lights on and traction control light on, engine light on
The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the electronic stability control (ESC) warning light illuminated causing the brakes to lock-up and the vehicle to not accelerate as needed. The contact stated that she waited until the vehicle cooled down for the vehicle to operate normally. The contact was then able to drive the vehicle home safely. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. Additionally, the dealer stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V122000 (Exterior Lighting) and that she had to pay out-of-pocket for the repair. The contact agreed to the repair but was later informed that the parts were discontinued. The manufacturer was contacted and was working with the contact. The failure mileage was 210,075.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have been encountering issues with my 2007 Hyundai Sonata SE in the following manners: 1- At times the brake lights will be on and the car will have anyone inside. 2- My ESC OFF light comes on will not go off. 3- When using my headlights the cruise control will not work. (Specifically when the automatic lights would come on the cruise goes off) 4-At random times the key will not turn. All the above mentioned issues concern the electrical system!, Speed Control!, and lighting systems. All are available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of others has been put at risk because of system failures causing the car to operate improperly and dangerously. I have not had the extra money to take it to the dealership. No other reports have been made. The only warning light is the ESC OFF light comes on occasionally. This light began coming on 6 months ago.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
Red “airbag” light on dash illuminated while driving. Code read as B1706: passenger buckle pretensioner. May have been covered under Hyundai’s 15yr/250k warranty but owners never notified since not official recall. Although, this defect may not affect airbags themselves it causes “airbag” light to remain illuminated until addressed. Driving with the “airbag” light continuously illuminated may pose risk to unsafe conditions due to unknown new airbag codes since “airbag” light already illuminated with buckle pretensioner code B1706.
Air Bag light is ON due to bad OCS - OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM on the passenger seat. It is a safety issue and airbags wont deploy in case of an accident. Passenger seat bealt light is blinking even withoit passenger. Problem has been confirmed by the service center and reported to the manafacturer. There is an open campain 083 for Sonatas with this issue but not all vehicles are included, VIN of my vehicle is not included even if it has the same issues as described in the campain.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata SE v6 3.3L and on January 9th, 2026 I had an incident where on the road my charging system light on signifying alternator failure. I made it home, but the battery was dead which was recently purchased. After recharging the battery I conducted tests with a multimeter and have determined the alternator has failed. The alternator has accrued a coating of oil overtime that was unknown until my research into the matter of root cause. Hyundai manufactures a V6 engine family called Lamba in which a version called Lambda MPi G6DB was introduced in 2007–2009 Hyundai Santa Fe (CM) and 2005–2009 Hyundai Sonata (NF) models. In 2023 Hyundai issued a recall for the 2007-2009 Santa Fe for a Cylinder Head Cover Oil Leak Repair where oil drips from the valve cover directly onto the alternator causing it to fail. I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata 3.3L V6 engine where the very same issue has occurred with photo evidence that has caused my alternator to fail and have tested the issue. This vehicle model was not included in the recall despite the engine being exactly the same as the recalled model, the year being the exact same as the Santa Fe, and the alternator in the exact placement where the oil drips into the alternator causing failure just like the Santa Fe recall. The Santa Fe recall with the same issue is documented with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below: [XXX] Hyundai has yet to issue the same recall for the Hyundai Sonata brand of vehicles, despite the same issue occurring and a known issue with the Lambda MPi G6DB engine design effecting multiple models in the same way documented across multiple owners of these vehicles with various fixes suggested on Youtube, Reddit, and enthusiast forums for this engineering failure that causes considerable risk if the alternator fails in operation on roadways. 2007 Hyundai Sonata- Consumers son is emailing on behalf of his elderly mother. He is requesting any kind of help in reference to a catastrophic engine failure. Complaint has been filed with the MA Attorney Generals Office and the email mentions a current NHTSA investigation into the 2007 Sonata.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I took the car in for a recall/warranty repair on 3/28/2021. The part (seatbelt/airbag sensor/pre tensioner) has still not been delivered to the dealer so that they can repair the vehicle. The part being defective prevents the airbag sensor from operating correctly and, as such, the airbags will not work in the event of a collision. This car is my daily driver and has largely been parked idle for 12 months. For the entire year, I have been fighting with their corporate customer support team and there has been no progress whatsoever on securing the part. They have given me numerous dates for the part to arrive. None of them have been met. No new date has been provided. The dealer blames Hyundai Corporate, Hyundai Corporate blames the 'distribution centre' and so on. The car is unsafe with no airbags and there is no resolution in sight.
THE AIR BAG SENSOR IN MY CAR IS DEFECTIVE. THIS WAS ALREADY A RECALL BY HYUNDAI, BUT FOR REASONS I DON'T UNDERSTAND DOES NOT INCLUDE MY CAR AND I BELIEVE IT SHOULD HAVE. IT IS THE RIGHT MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR THE ORIGINAL RECALL INCLUDED. APPARENTLY THE SEATBELT TENSION ADJUSTER IS ALSO INVOLVED IN MY CASE.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
AIRBAG ON THE PASSAGE SIDE WON'T GO OFF, SEATBELT GET STUCK AT TIME, PAINT PEELING OFF THE BODY BACK ,SIDE AND TOP AND THE WINDOW ON THE PASSAGE SIDE WON'T GO DOWN
DOOR HANDLES HAVE ALL FALLEN OFF THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE, THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY PULLED SIDEWAYS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS. THIS ACTION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LEAVE THE ROADWAY AND STRIKE A CONCRETE POLE RESULTING IN SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. OCCUPANT WAS UNHARMED. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. PRIOR TO THE EVENT, THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING NO ISSUES.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

I WANT TO CREATE A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE IF NOT OTHER MAKES AND MODELS FROM THIS MANUFACTURER. THIS VEHICLE IS A FIRE HAZARD DUE TO CHRONIC CORROSION ON THE FUEL LINES. IT IS ALSO A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO LOSS OF BRAKES AND STEERING DUE TO CHRONIC CORROSION OF THE BRAKE AND POWER STEERING LINES. OUR 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA NEEDED POWER STEERING FLUID AND BRAKE FLUID ON A REGULAR BASIS. MOST RECENTLY WE LOST BRAKES AND HAD THE CAR INSPECTED. THE INSPECTION DETERMINED THAT THE POWER STEERING LINES, BRAKE LINES AND FUEL LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED AND ALL LEAKING. THE BRAKE LINES HAD THE MOST SEVERE CORROSION BUT THE FUEL AND POWER STEERING HAD CORROSION DEEP ENOUGH TO CAUSE A LEAK. THESE LEAKS ARE NOT IN THE VICINITY OF FITTINGS OR CONNECTIONS. THE WORST LEAKS ARE IN THE VICINITY OF BRACKETS OR LINE RETAINERS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN SOLD AND OPERATED IN THE NORTHEAST SNOW BELT BUT THE CORROSION IS WORSE THAN MOST VEHICLES THAT ARE MUCH OLDER WITH HIGHER MILEAGE. CLEARLY THE LINES WERE MADE OF INFERIOR METAL CAUSING THE COMPONENTS TO FAIL PREMATURELY. APPARENTLY, INSTEAD OF USING A MORE COSTLY RUST RESISTANT METAL THE MANUFACTURER RELIED ON A PLASTIC COATING ON THE LINES TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE ELEMENTS. THIS COMPLETELY FAILED AS SOME OF THE LINES ARE COMPLETELY CORRODED ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH. THE PLASTIC COATING LIKELY ACCELERATED THE CORROSION AS IT RETAINED CORROSIVE MATERIALS IN CONTACT WITH THE METAL. I CONTACTED THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON THESE COMPONENTS AND I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL PART AND LABOR COSTS. I OPENED A CASE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT BUT INDICATED THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND WOULD NOT LIKELY PURSUE A SAFETY RECALL.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE AND FELT AS IF THE WHEELS WERE NOT TOUCHING THE ROADWAY. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND TO THE DEALER (HIXSON FORD OF MONROE, 6300 FRONTAGE RD, MONROE, LA 71202, (855) 519-9722) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER TIRES NEEDED REPLACEMENT BECAUSE THE TIRE SIZES WERE INCORRECT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH COOPER SCS ULTRA TOURING TIRES, SIZE:215/55R17 (DOT:U93R1CU1817), BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THERE HAVE BEEN VARIOUS PROBLEMS THAT WERE DISCOVERED RECENTLY MOSTLY BASED ON THE REAR SUSPENSION AND SHOCKS. THE BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE GONE OUT MANY TIMES AND THE ALIGNMENT IS FREQUENTLY INCORRECT, AND SO THE TIRES GO THROUGH A LOT OF WEAR. THE MOST RECENT TIRES WERE PLACED 9 MONTHS AGO AND ALREADY HAVE TERRIBLE WEAR FROM BOTH THE SUSPENSION AND THE ALIGNMENT. WHENEVER THE CAR IS IN MOTION, THE CAR DOES NOT DRIVE AS SMOOTHLY AS IT SHOULD AND BOUNCES LIGHTLY. THERE IS LOUD NOISE WHENEVER DRIVING OVER SPEED BUMPS AS IF THE TIRE PRESSURE IS POOR. THERE IS ALSO A GRINDING NOISE WHEN THE CAR TURNS SOMEWHAT SHARPLY. MANY OF THESE PROBLEMS HAVE EXISTED FOR A WHILE BUT WERE ONLY DIAGNOSED TODAY AT A MIDAS AUTO IN WILMINGTON, NC.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON OCTOBER 18, 2019 MY FUEL PUMP BROKE IT HAPPENED AT A PLAZA PARKED AND THEN ON FEBRUARY 10, 2019 WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR CRASH DUE TO A BALL JOINT FROM THE FRONT END PASSENGER SIDE. MY BALL JOINT BROKE AND EVERYTHING ELSE DETACHED IT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY I WAS WITH MY KIDS AND THANK GOD I DIDN'T CRASH INTO A CAR BUT IT WAS A VERY SCARY TRAUMATIC MOMENT FOR ALL OF US. I KEEP REPLACING THE INNER AND OUTER TIE ROD, ALSO THE BALL JOINT AND NOW IT MAKES SENSE WHY, IT HAS TO DO WITH THE CONTROL ARM. I'M REPORTING THIS NOW BECAUSE I LOOKED INTO THE SAFETY RECALLS TODAY AND FOUND SO MANY MY VEHICLE FALLS UNDER THESE LISTINGS AND I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THE SAFETY RECALLS TO BRING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE PICTURES TAKEN WHEN MY CAR BROKE DOWN, BUT DON'T HAVE IT AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW I CAN PROVIDE IT AFTERWARDS AND I HAD MY CAR TOWED.
I WANT TO CREATE A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE IF NOT OTHER MAKES AND MODELS FROM THIS MANUFACTURER. THIS VEHICLE IS A FIRE HAZARD DUE TO CHRONIC CORROSION ON THE FUEL LINES. Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
car began to pull like out of align but upon inspection by tire repair shop it was discovered that the tread was separating on all 4 tires. had 2 replaced at the time. After a few hundred miles the other 2 tires failed in the rear causing the car to shake violently. My kids were on thier way home to Columbus,Ga from Beaufort,S.C. had to leave car there Statesboro, Ga.
THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM HAS SHOWN A FAILURE FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS. I HAVE TAKEN IT THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY WOULD RE-TEACH THE SYSTEM AND THE TPMS LIGHT RETURNS ABOUT A WEEK LATER. THE DEALER THEN SAID I HAD 2 FAULTY TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS. I HAD ALL 4 TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS REPLACED AT A NON-DEALER (THEY ASSURED ME THEY COULD MAKE THE NEW SENSORS COMMUNICATE WITH THE CAR) LOCATION AND THE TPMS LIGHT CAME BACK ON ABOUT A WEEK LATER. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID A RE-TEACH AND AGAIN WITHIN A WEEK THE TPMS LIGHT WAS BACK ON. THIS SAFETY SYSTEM, DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EARLY WARNING OF TIRE LOSING AIR PRESSURE, IS NOT VERY ROBUST AND IS VERY MANUFACTURER DEPENDENT FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. AT THIS POINT THE SYSTEM IS INOPERABLE AND HAS BEEN FOR 2 YEARS. I FEEL SURE THE DEALER WILL SAY THEY NEED TO PUT HYUNDAI PARTS IN THE VEHICLE TO MAKE THE SYSTEM OPERABLE. THE COST FOR THAT SERVICE IS TWICE WHAT THIRD PARTIES CHARGE. ON A LIMITED INCOME THAT PREMIUM IS NOT PRACTICAL. THESE UNIVERSALLY REQUIRED SAFETY SYSTEMS NEED TO BE MORE GENERIC AS TO MAKE THEM EASIER TO MAINTAIN AND REPAIR. IT IS UNKNOWN TO ME IF HYUNDAI IS HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS SYSTEM ON OTHER CARS. *TR
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
A MECHANIC AT OUR INSURED, HEADQUARTER HYUNDAI SANFORD, WAS INJURED WHEN THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD DUE TO SHIFT CABLE GROMMET BEING BROKEN LEAVING VEHICLE IN GEAR
THE VEHICLE WOULD RANDOMLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. DURING THE FAILURE, THE RPMS WOULD INCREASE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE FORWARD. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO APPLY EXTRA FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING AROUND 70000 ON CAR. IT HAS A JERK WHEN I AM ACCELERATING UNTIL I GET TO A FASTER SPEED. BUT IT DOESN'T ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN.. I WAS STRING AT A LIGHTOR WHENEVER I GO TO STOP IT ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN. SOMETIMES WHILE I'M DRIVING IT SEEMS TO PICK UP SPEED ON ITS OWN AS WELL

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS WITH A 2.4L I4 ENGINE AND 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION HAS SERIOUS SHUDDER ISSUES AT 45MPH. THE VEHICLE ALMOST BECOMES UNDRIVEABLE DUE TO THE SHUDDER AND HAS TO BE SPED UP TO SPEEDS ABOVE 45 MPH WHICH IS BEYOND THE POSTED REGULATORY SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROADS. *TW
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS OR IDLING ON AN INCLINE, THE VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY ROLLS BACKWARDS AS IF IT HAD A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THIS INCREASES THE RISK OF A SERIOUS CRASH OR INJURY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT IT WAS A COMMON CHARACTERISTIC. HE CALLED THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE, WHO ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE, BUT NEVER TOOK ANY ACTION. AS OF OCTOBER 8, 2008, THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN REMEDIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36,000.

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
I HAVE A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA AND I AM EXPERIENCING BAD ODOR COMING FROM THE AC UNIT. IT SMELLS VERY BAD WHEN I TURN ON THE AC AND AT TIMES THE UNIT BLOWS OUT VERY WARM HUMID AIR INTO THE CAR WHILE THE AC IS RUNNING. I CHANGED THE CABIN AIR FILTER , LOOKED FOR DEAD RODENTS AND COULDN'T FIND ANY. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS CAUSED BY MOLD AND MILDEW CAUSED BY THE MOISTURE TRAPPED IN THE EVAPORATOR. MY CONCERN IS THE MOLD AND MILDEW THAT CAN CAUSE RESPATORY PROBLEMS FOR THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS. I RESEARCHED ONLINE AND MANY OTHER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. I WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM FOR THE SAFETY OF THE DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND CHILDREN THAT WILL BE TRAVELING IN THESE VEHICLES. PLEASE REFER THIS LINK FOR SIMILAR COMPLAINTS.
