STOP LAMP SWITCH FAILURE
BY LETTER DATED APRIL 15, 2009, HYUNDAI NOTIFIED THE AGENCY THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL (NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 09V122) TO REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCHES ON MANY OF ITS MODEL YEAR 2005-2008 VEHICLES.SEE RECALL 09V122 FOR A COMPLETE LIST. THE AGENCY OPENED ITS INVESTIGATION BASED ON FIVE COMPLAINTS OF STOP LAMP FAILURE ACROSS SEVERAL 2007 HYUNDAI MODELS. THE AGENCY ALSO RECEIVED EARLY WARNING (EWR) REPORTS ON THIS ISSUE.MOST OF THOSE FAILURES WERE TRACED TO THE IMPROPER OPERATION OF THE STOP LAMP SWITCH THAT CONTROLS STOP LAMP ILLUMINATION.A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH CAN CAUSE THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LIGHTS NOT TO LIGHT DURING BRAKING, OR ALTERNATIVELY, IT CAN CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY LIT EVEN WHEN A DRIVER TAKES THE FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. FAILURE OF THE STOP LAMPS TO ILLUMINATE PROPERLY CREATES THE HAZARD OF REAR END COLLISIONS WHEN DRIVERS FOLLOWING THE SUBJECT VEHICLE DO NOT RECOGNIZE THAT THE VEHICLE IS SLOWING OR STOPPING. HYUNDAI REPORTED ONE CRASH INCIDENT (A FRONTAL IMPACT), WITHOUT INJURY, THAT WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THIS DEFECT.THE AGENCY REVIEWED THE INCIDENT AND CANNOT CONCLUDE THAT IT IS RELATED TO THIS DEFECT. THERE ARE OTHER POTENTIAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO FAILURE OF THE STOP LAMP SWITCH: FAILURE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGE, INTERFERENCE WITH PROPER FUNCTIONING OF ANTILOCK BRAKES AND ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, AND INABILITY TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER OUT OF PARK POSITION.BASED ON THE ABOVE SAFETY RECALL, THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED.

The charging system and alternator failed due to a known safety recall involving an oil leak from the front cylinder bank cover gasket. The oil leaked onto the alternator, causing the charging system to become inoperative and resulting in the engine stalling. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership and is available for inspection upon request. The engine stalled unexpectedly without any warning, creating a serious safety hazard and increasing the risk of a crash. The failure occurred because the recalled defect caused the charging system to fail. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership, where the failure has been confirmed. The vehicle has been inspected by the Hyundai dealership. Hyundai has replaced the alternator under the applicable safety recall but has declined to cover the engine failure under the recall warranty. Based on the circumstances of this incident, I believe the engine failure was directly caused by the recalled defect. According to the recall, oil leaking from the front cylinder bank cover gasket can drip onto the alternator, causing the charging system to become inoperative and resulting in an engine stall. My vehicle experienced this exact sequence of events. There were no warning lights or prior indications of a problem before the engine stalled unexpectedly. Although Hyundai acknowledged the recall condition by replacing the alternator, it has denied responsibility for the resulting engine damage, despite the engine failure occurring immediately after the recalled oil leak caused the charging system to fail. I am requesting that Hyundai honor the intent of the recall warranty by covering all damage directly resulting from the recalled defect, including the engine failure.

The vehicle is able to be shifted out of park when no keys are in the ignition. My grandson was in the front seat while the vehicle was being cleaned and he shifted the car into reverse and almost rolled into the street. No keys were anywhere inside the vehicle.

The vehicle was supposed to be fixed(recall 197) regarding the oil in the alternator issue. After it was fixed my wife was driving on [XXX] at rush hour in Atlanta GA. It slowly was losing power and she called me about it. I told her to get over to the right and take the next exit. It did stop on the exit ramp in the dark but no electric what so ever. The lights and flashers were inoperative. She called the police and they pulled behind the car with their lights flashing. A tow truck brought it to the Hyundia dealer at night and put the keys in the drop box. The dealer replaced the faulty alternator but did NOT cover the bill because they could not find oil on the alternator! About $1500 later I took the car home. This was November 2024 Last week [XXX], the replaced alternator failed again. This was supposed to be fixed by the dealer in November, but somehow this FIX is not working. We now have 2 failures within a year of the alternator supposedly fixed(recall 197) with a "drip pan"? I am reluctant to take it back to this dealer as they have failed twice to fix the problem. Another dealer is far away and the charged up car may not make it that far. You need to tell me why this alternator is still failing and sticking me with the bill when you have supposedly had a fix for the problem. Please advise me on the solution. My car broke down in the middle of the highway. I could not move my car. It was stuck in neutral, but still would not move. I had already switched out the battery, but the battery and engine light was still on. I come to find out it is my alternator. And I feel it is leaking into the alternator, making a crash hazard

2007 Hyundai Veracruz AWD Limited died while young female driving in dark, winter, remote location. Towed to nearby reputable repair center. Front Valve Cover gasket & rebuilt (no new available for this old of veracrus) alternator installed and owner notified of up and coming recall not yet formalized: NHTSA # 20V705000 RECALL #197. Paperwork submitted to Hyundai along with extensive proof of work completed thru receipts and pictures. Hyundai international indicated closest Hyundai service center would have to sign off on work completed. That Hyundai dealership refused to sign off that work had been completed. Stating oil still in area. Failed to notify young female that bottom oil gasket leaking as well as other problems. Owner drove back to original repair shop that performed recall #197 work where inspection showed bottom gasket failure which was replaced...nothing to do with recall but could have caused major other failures if not identified and addressed. Since that time, female stranded again remotely when rebuilt alternator failed. Repair shop warrantied part but not labor associated with, as no new alternators are or were made available for 2007 Hyundai veracruz recall. To this day, Hyundai has failed to reimburse owner for original recall performed nearing $1000 in repair costs plus additional $500 for rebuilt alternator failure as Hyundai has failed to make new retrofit parts to complete recall #197. Hyundai international closed this case with no action on their part. Please advise

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.
AIR BAGS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent safety advisory regarding dangerous, counterfeit driver‑side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN), that have been identified in U.S. vehicles following prior crashes, theft, or non‑certified airbag replacements. These inflators are not approved for use, may rupture during deployment, and have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Please see attached announcement, provided by NHTSA, for more details.
AIR BAGS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driver’s-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle cabin. To date, Hyundai is aware of three people who have died while driving a Hyundai vehicle with one of these substandard replacement airbag inflators that deployed in what likely would have been a survivable crash. NHTSA has issued a public advisory urging vehicle owners and service professionals to have vehicles inspected if there is reason to believe that a non-genuine replacement airbag may have been installed. Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles, prior airbag deployments, or unknown repair histories may present a higher risk. NHTSA strongly cautions against self-inspection by vehicle owners and recommends inspection by trained technicians.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING
This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.
VISIBILITY; VISIBILITY/WIPER
This bulletin contains information about the proper removal of the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all models. If the protective cover is not removed correctly, there is a possibility of the rubber insert and rail spring becoming partially separated on the inner side of the wiper blade, which could lead to poor wiping performance and/or possible scratching of the windshield glass. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to properly remove the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all new wiper blades.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
This bulletin provides important checkpoint guidelines when performing engine oil and filter change services.
STRUCTURE:BODY
Hyundai applies a Paint Protection Film (PPF) on new vehicles before delivery to dealerships. It provides a barrier between the paint and contaminants, such as rail dust, acid rain, and industrial fallout. In rare cases, the paint can become clouded under the PPF. These spots are the result of moisture trapped between the PPF and the paint.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
