Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

2019 Infiniti QX50 with engine bearing failure defect matching NHTSA Recall #25V-437. Vehicle was sold to me on 12/24/2025 by a dealer, MORE THAN FIVE MONTHS after the recall was issued on 07/14/2025. The dealer NEVER disclosed the active, unrepaired safety recall. Two months after purchase, the engine developed loss of power and unusual noises - exact symptoms described in the recall. An independent mechanic diagnosed a pre-existing camshaft bearing defect. Despite component replacement, symptoms persist, confirming the defect was present at time of sale. This is a serious safety violation. The dealer knew or should have known about the recall via CARFAX and failed to disclose it, violating federal law 49 U.S.C. § 30120. The vehicle is unsafe to drive with an unrepaired engine bearing failure. Safety Risk: Engine bearing degradation can lead to complete engine failure while driving, resulting in loss of motive power and crash risk. Requested Action: Federal investigation into dealer's failure to disclose active safety recalls.

Good morning, I am writing to formally escalate a serious and unresolved safety concern involving my vehicle and to follow up on my existing case (Case #XXX). On April 22, 2026, while driving on the highway at approximately 55 mph, my vehicle suddenly performed a hard stop as if it detected an imminent collision. At the time, there were no visible obstructions or vehicles directly in front of me that would have warranted automatic emergency braking. This is a repeat issue. A nearly identical incident occurred on August 8, 2025, which was previously reported. Despite that report, the problem remains unresolved and continues to present a significant safety risk. These unexpected braking events create a hazardous driving condition with a clear risk of rear-end collision, particularly at highway speeds. Based on the pattern and circumstances, this strongly suggests a false activation of the automatic emergency braking system or a related safety system malfunction. Given the repeated nature of this issue and the potential safety implications, I am formally requesting: * Immediate escalation of this case to the appropriate engineering or safety review team * A full investigation as a potential safety defect * Identification of any related technical service bulletins, recalls, or known system issues * A clear plan and timeline for diagnosis and resolution at an authorized INFINITI dealership * Confirmation of whether reimbursement or other corrective action will be considered given the ongoing safety risk and repeated service attempts Please confirm receipt of this escalation in writing, along with next steps and assigned case handling details. I expect timely and serious attention to this matter given the safety risk involved. Sincerely, XXX XXX

The power liftgate (automatic trunk) system on my 2019 Infiniti QX50 malfunctioned. After fully opening, the liftgate unexpectedly closed on its own without any warning beeps or resistance detection. This poses a severe safety risk. The heavy door struck my head, causing a physical injury (a severe bump/contusion). The vehicle and the affected components are available for inspection upon request. This problem has not yet been inspected, reproduced, or confirmed by a dealer, manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives, as I am reporting this dangerous safety defect immediately. Furthermore, there were no warning lamps, error messages, or any other symptoms prior to this sudden failure.

My 2019 Infiniti QX50 has the KR20DDET 2.0L VC-Turbo engine involved in NHTSA Recall 25V437/Infiniti Campaign R25B2 for potential engine-bearing failure, but my VIN does not currently show an open recall. The vehicle is at Infiniti Milwaukee, [XXX], [XXX]. During inspection, bronze-colored metallic glitter/debris was found in the engine oil. This may indicate internal bearing wear and appears consistent with the metal debris that Recall 25V437 requires dealers to check for in the lower oil pan. The dealership is refusing to acknowledge or report the bronze-colored debris as possible bearing material. It reported only “engine sludge” to Infiniti and is treating the engine repair as customer-pay. Sludge and bronze-colored metallic particles are visibly different conditions. The vehicle and engine are available for inspection at the dealership. I requested preservation of the oil, filter, oil-pan contents, photographs, video and technician findings. Bearing failure could cause engine damage or loss of power while driving, increasing crash risk. Warning lights before inspection: UNKNOWN. The exact composition of the debris is UNKNOWN pending testing. You see metal debris in oil pan of the video of an engine that failed citing sledge while clearing seeing metal debris in the photo provided by the dealership. I request that NHTSA investigate whether this vehicle was incorrectly excluded from the recall and whether recall-related metallic debris is being misclassified as sludge. Engine seized on road due to bearing debris (confirmed by dealer photos), covered by recall 25V-437. Infiniti corporate denied repair, falsely citing “maintenance” despite negligible sludge. No loaner provided for two weeks, stranding me. Laws Violated: 49 U.S.C. § 30120 (free recall remedy), 49 CFR § 573.6 (interim support during delays).

MY WIFE OPENED THE REAR LIFTGATE USING THE OUTSIDE ELECTRONIC DOOR SWITCH ON THE LIFTGATE. THE LIFTGATE ELECTRICALLY FULLY OPENED. MY WIFE STARTED TO LOAD ITEMS INTO THE REAR OF THE SUV. THE DOOR ELECTRICALLY CLOSED ON ITS OWN. THE DOOR STRUCK THE BACK OF MY WIFE'S HEAD BEFORE SHE COULD GET OUT OF THE WAY. THE DOOR DID NOT STOP OR OPEN AUTOMATICALLY, OR DETECT AN OBJECT IN ITS PATH. SHE TRIED TO REOPEN THE LIFTGATE USING THE SWITCH, AND IT RAISED ABOUT 5 INCHES AND THEN IMMEDIATELY SHUT. SHE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE HOME AND TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENED. I OPENED THE REAR LIFTGATE USING THE EXTERIOR SWITCH AS SHE HAD. THE GATE FULLY OPENED ELECTRICALLY AND WITHOUT STOPPING IT IMMEDIATELY CLOSED. I TRIED TO OPEN THE LIFTGATE AGAIN AND IT LIFTED ABOUT 5 INCHES AND IMMEDIATELY CLOSED. SHE DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND SHOWED THE INFINITI OF CORAL GABLES SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY REPEATED THE ACTIONS, THE DOOR OPENED AND IMMEDIATELY CLOSED BY ITSELF. I CONTACTED INFINITI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY OPENED INCIDENT 36294200. THEY GAVE HER A LOANER CAR AND HAVE REQUESTED THE DEALER NOT REPAIR THE CAR UNTIL A SPECIALIST ARRIVES. THE CAR WAS PARKED AND NOT RUNNING ON ALL THREE OCCASIONS.

On August 1, 2025, at 44,391 miles on the Vehicle odometer, Plaintiff experienced a catastrophic failure of the complete power-steering and rack and pinion system, while traveling on Vermont Interstate 89 in Middlesex, Vermont. The steering wheel instantly became largely immoveable, the car shuddered and vibrated. By sheer luck, Plaintiff’s Vehicle did not collide with another vehicle or object. The Plaintiff could have been seriously injured or killed, had a collision resulted from the loss of steering ability. Plaintiff navigated to a nearby park and ride pull-off; the vehicle was completely incapacitated. An inspection of the Vehicle by Infiniti of Nashua Service Department revealed that the complete power steering rack and pinion system had failed. Service records research by Infiniti of Nashua Service Department revealed that at 31,000 miles on the Vehicle odometer, the power steering and rack and pinion system had a previous complete failure and was replaced under Warranty. The Service Department advised that failure of a system at 31,000 miles, let alone again at 44,391 miles, indicated a factory defect or an improper installation/repair of the system on the part of Infiniti. INFINITI OF WARWICK RHODE ISLAND DID NOT DISCLOSE THE COMPLETE SYSTEM FAILURE at the time of the 31,000-mile replacement, and falsely reported to CarFax “steering/suspension checked,” instead. Litigation pending.

THIS VEHICLE HAS THE PRO-PILOT ASSIST WHICH KEEPS THE VEHICLE BETWEEN THE LINES CENTERED. IT IS AN AUTO STEER. WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS TIMES WHERE THE STEERING WILL GO FROM LINE TO LINE, IT WILL CROSS THE LINE PUT YOU ON SHOULDER, CROSS THE CENTER OR EVEN MOVE YOU INTO ANOTHER LANE WITH TRAFFIC IN IT. WE HAVE COMPLAINED TO DEALERSHIP, THEY TOOK IT FOR A WEEK SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. WITHIN 24 MILES OF GETTING IT BACK IT WAS DOING IT AGAIN. THEY SAID UNLESS THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON ( FOR ENGINE CODE) THEY WILL DO NOTHING. THIS IS A FEATURE USED MOSTLY ON HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS ISSUE IS MOST DANGEROUS, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IF IT DOES THIS COULD CAUSE A MULTI VEHICLE COLLISION RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH. I CANNOT PINPOINT CERTAIN DATES AS IT HAS HAPPENED ENOUGH WHERE MY WIFE WILL NOT USE IT.

Multiple repeated problems with electrical system. Repeated crash sensor failure. This mainly happens when it is warm or sunny. The dealership has had the vehicle four times and the problem is still reoccurring. The malfunction light comes on when the car is first started or while driving. The dealership stated that none of the crash sensors work when it is lit. They have replaced the module that was diagnosed to be the problem, however there is still the same issues. They are going to replace the module again. They have replaced a module to control the wipers twice. The wipers still come on randomly when it is sunny, and the delay for the wipers does not work when it is raining. The cruise control stopped working and is throwing codes. This morning`s new warning was shift system malfunction. It's been in three times for the air-conditioner. The cooling fan was stuck on high speed until they replaced a sensor. The car was inspected and the brake pads were okay, however when the car stopped, there was a very loud pulsation. The dealership told me it needed rear brakes, which we replaced, and $600 later, they were still pulsating. After the second time taking it back, the dealer then said it was the tires which were new. We took it to a private garage, and the problem was warped, factory front rotars because they could not support the weight of the car. They were replaced with performance drilled and slotted rotars, which corrected the issue. The dealership cannot figure out the electrical issues, so they keep replacing the same parts and returning it back in a dangerous state. Since the vehicle is throwing so many codes and has so many malfunctions that I feel unsafe driving it. All of these problems problems started December 2019, when the car had 8000 miles on it. It has been to two different infiniti dealerships, neither being able to fix it. We have photos of all the codes, but when we tried to upload, it failed over and over.
