Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect. When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles. In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine. Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect. A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components. In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The power liftgate (automatic trunk) system on my 2019 Infiniti QX50 malfunctioned. After fully opening, the liftgate unexpectedly closed on its own without any warning beeps or resistance detection. This poses a severe safety risk. The heavy door struck my head, causing a physical injury (a severe bump/contusion). The vehicle and the affected components are available for inspection upon request. This problem has not yet been inspected, reproduced, or confirmed by a dealer, manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives, as I am reporting this dangerous safety defect immediately. Furthermore, there were no warning lamps, error messages, or any other symptoms prior to this sudden failure.

The contact owns a 2019 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle was shaking erratically. In addition, the oil light and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The dealer was made aware of the failure. In addition, the vehicle was inspected on 07/01/2026 by the dealer under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V437000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact was informed that the vehicle had passed the inspection. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact was informed that the mileage on the vehicle was over the mileage limitation. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

My 2019 Infiniti QX50 has the KR20DDET 2.0L VC-Turbo engine involved in NHTSA Recall 25V437/Infiniti Campaign R25B2 for potential engine-bearing failure, but my VIN does not currently show an open recall. The vehicle is at Infiniti Milwaukee, [XXX], [XXX]. During inspection, bronze-colored metallic glitter/debris was found in the engine oil. This may indicate internal bearing wear and appears consistent with the metal debris that Recall 25V437 requires dealers to check for in the lower oil pan. The dealership is refusing to acknowledge or report the bronze-colored debris as possible bearing material. It reported only “engine sludge” to Infiniti and is treating the engine repair as customer-pay. Sludge and bronze-colored metallic particles are visibly different conditions. The vehicle and engine are available for inspection at the dealership. I requested preservation of the oil, filter, oil-pan contents, photographs, video and technician findings. Bearing failure could cause engine damage or loss of power while driving, increasing crash risk. Warning lights before inspection: UNKNOWN. The exact composition of the debris is UNKNOWN pending testing. You see metal debris in oil pan of the video of an engine that failed citing sledge while clearing seeing metal debris in the photo provided by the dealership. I request that NHTSA investigate whether this vehicle was incorrectly excluded from the recall and whether recall-related metallic debris is being misclassified as sludge. The contact owns a 2019 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that after turning the vehicle off and exiting with the keys remaining inside the vehicle, the contact opened rear driver’s side door to retrieve a diaper bag and closed the door. While attempting to open the rear passenger’s side door to remove the child from the vehicle, the contact discovered that all four doors were locked. The Police and Fire Department was called to the scene. The window was intentionally fractured to unlock the door, and the child was removed from the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 57,859.

2019 Infiniti QX50 with engine bearing failure defect matching NHTSA Recall #25V-437. Vehicle was sold to me on 12/24/2025 by a dealer, MORE THAN FIVE MONTHS after the recall was issued on 07/14/2025. The dealer NEVER disclosed the active, unrepaired safety recall. Two months after purchase, the engine developed loss of power and unusual noises - exact symptoms described in the recall. An independent mechanic diagnosed a pre-existing camshaft bearing defect. Despite component replacement, symptoms persist, confirming the defect was present at time of sale. This is a serious safety violation. The dealer knew or should have known about the recall via CARFAX and failed to disclose it, violating federal law 49 U.S.C. § 30120. The vehicle is unsafe to drive with an unrepaired engine bearing failure. Safety Risk: Engine bearing degradation can lead to complete engine failure while driving, resulting in loss of motive power and crash risk. Requested Action: Federal investigation into dealer's failure to disclose active safety recalls.

The issue on the 2019 Infiniti QX50 it's not the motor that they had the recall on it's the VCR actuator it goes bad causes the bracket that's connected to rub against the side of the engine block causes it to have metal shavings and the car to go in limp mode and can cause an accident it's a common issue just put one in and already bad not even a year The original one made it to $47,000 mi before going bad

The vehicle experienced hesitation, delayed acceleration, and multiple warning lights while driving. The loss of power was severe enough that the driver became afraid to make left turns across traffic because the vehicle would not accelerate quickly or consistently when needed. This created a significant safety risk, as the driver could not reliably judge whether the vehicle would clear an intersection before oncoming traffic. A diagnostic trouble code related to the turbocharger control system was retrieved during the first visit to the dealership. The vehicle was brought in for a recall inspection involving potential engine bearing wear and oil pressure issues, but the recall inspection was not performed on the first visit and was rescheduled. On the way to the recall appointment, additional warning lights illuminated and the vehicle again lost power. The dealership kept the vehicle and stated that further diagnostics were needed. Over several days, the dealership reported that diagnostics were being performed, but no diagnostic results, measurements, technician notes, or recall determination were provided. The manufacturer later confirmed that they had not received any diagnostic information from the dealership and could not proceed with the recall case. The dealership verbally stated that the turbocharger issue was “not related to the recall,” but no documentation was provided to support this. Instead, the dealership sent a cost‑sharing repair proposal without identifying the failed component, the cause of the failure, or whether the failure was related to the recall. Warning lamps and reduced performance first appeared on the initial date of symptoms and continued through the recall appointment. The recall process remains incomplete because the dealership has not provided the required diagnostic documentation.

The contact owns a 2019 Infiniti QX50. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V437000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure due to metal shavings found in the oil pan. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was denied an engine replacement. The dealer informed the contact that the claim was denied due to the vehicle exceeding the warranty mileage and a lack of proper maintenance. The contact provided maintenance records; however, the claim was still denied. The dealer stated that the failure was related to insufficient maintenance and not the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

HINT: Certification Label = FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) label. These items may be available from Infiniti by request if certain criteria are met. This bulletin lists the criteria and provides an application form for such replacements. · The “VIN Plate/Label” (metal plate or vinyl label) is attached to the instrument panel or body on the driver side at the base of the windshield (see Figure 1). · The “Certification Label” (vinyl adhesive label) is located on the lower area of the driver side B-Pillar (see Figure 1).

TELEMATICS SERVICE INFORMATION See ITB19-029 for models built after those listed above for a different Service Procedure. SERVICE INFORMATION The Applied Vehicles are equipped with a wireless communication device called a Telematics Communication Unit (TCU). With an active Infiniti Connection® or Infiniti InTouch Services™, the TCU communicates with the Infiniti Data Center to provide various security and convenience services. This bulletin contains important service procedures that must be performed properly in order to set-up and maintain the telematics system for the Applied Vehicles. Ø A table has been provided on the next page that lists the model and year specific steps required to successfully configure a TCU after it has been replaced. Ø A check OFF sheet has been provided on page 21 to print and check off steps as they are performed. Please staple the completed Check OFF Sheet to the repair order.

IF YOU CONFIRM The client states that either the rear hatch is inoperative, or the rear hatch closes after opening only a small amount, AND DTC B2426-23 for “SPINDLE SENSOR LH” and/or DTC B2427-23 for “SPINDLE SENSOR RH” is stored, AND/OR There is a growling type noise from the rear hatch area when opening/closing the rear hatch. · DTC B2426-23 for “SPINDLE SENSOR LH” and/or DTC B2427-23 for “SPINDLE SENSOR RH” may also be stored. HINT: If any DTC other than B2426-23 and/or B2427-23 is stored, this bulletin does not apply. ACTION Replace ONLY the spindle unit that is confirmed to be setting one of the DTCs listed above and/or causing the growling noise. Do NOT replace both spindle units when diagnosis leads to replacement of only one. HINT: Rear hatch spindle units are not hydraulic systems. If a rear hatch spindle unit appears to be leaking, this is normal drainage of water (rain, car wash, condensation) and design intended water management. Do not replace spindle units for suspected leaking. IMPORTANT: The purpose of ACTION (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

This behavior is normal, and no repairs should be performed.
