Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
1
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, 2015-2016 Murano Hybrid, and 2014-2017 INFINITI QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software may shut down the hybrid system and the engine under certain conditions, causing a loss of drive power.
The risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Dealers will reprogram the HPCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R21B4 and R21B5.

The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
The risk: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
The remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

DP22005ClosedDefect Petition

Pedestrian alert sounds

Opened Jan 27, 2023
Closed Aug 7, 2023

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.

WHEN AT A FULL STOP THE VEHICLE HAS A HARD TIME MOVING/ACCELERATING. I TAKE MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE BRAKE AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE. WHEN I PRESS THE GAS, THE VEHICLE WILL JERK VERY BADLY AND JUMP LIKE IT IS A STICK SHIFT, BUT IT IS NOT. WHEN IT FINALLY GETS MOVING IT CONTINUES TO JERK, SPUTTER AND JUMP. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS FOR THIS ISSUE AND I AM REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT WITHOUT A CODE OR THE VEHICLE DUPLICATING WHAT IT DOES THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE.

THE VEHICLE DOES NOT ACCELERATE WHEN COMMANDED USING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THERE IS A REVVING THEN A SUDDEN JERK FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, IN STOP AND GO CONDITIONS AND WHEN CHANGING LANES OR ATTEMPTING TO PASS. THE VEHICLE ALSO HAS A TENDENCY TO JERK OR SURGE FORWARD IN TIGHT PARKING SITUATIONS. THERE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN INSTANCES WHERE MY WIFE WAS ALMOST JERKED FORWARD INTO A BRICK RETAINING WALL. I HAVE BEEN ALMOST JERKED INTO THE REAR OF VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME WHILE IN STOP AND GO DRIVING SITUATIONS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP ON 8 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS FOR THIS PROBLEM WHICH THEY SAY "THEY CAN NOT RE-CREATE" THE EVENT OR GET A CODE ON THEIR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT FOR. THEREFORE, THEY SAY THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. ALSO, THEY ALLEGE THAT THEY HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE TO TRY TO RECREATE THE EVENT BUT THE LEGAL DOCUMENTATION THEY NOTE THE MILEAGE ON DOES NOT EVER VERIFY THAT. IN SHORT THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY OR IN TOWN AND COUNTRY DRIVING SITUATIONS. IT CREATES UNDUE STRESS ON THE DRIVER AND IN MANY CASES OUR PASSENGERS HAVE BEEN FRIGHTENED WHEN RIDING WITH US. PLEASE HELP *TR

TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND THEN SURGES. VERY FREQUENTLY, WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THERE IS NO ACCELERATION WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT DELAY. THE VEHICLE SURGES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC SITUATIONS AND ON MORE THAN OCCASION, HAS CAUSED NEAR ACCIDENTS. THE VEHICLE DOES THIS IN STOP AND GO DRIVING SITUATIONS AS WELL AS IN FREEWAY DRIVING SITUATIONS. THERE IS NO WAY TO DETERMINE OR TELL WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN. IT CREATES AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE DRIVING SITUATION WHICH IF LEFT UNCHECKED COULD CREATE A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. THIS HAPPENS ON AN ALMOST DAILY BASIS.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
