Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

TAKATA RECALL: I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSE A SOUND IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I WAS TOLD THE CAR NEEDED A WATER PUMP, BRAKE SYSTEM REPAIRS, WHEEL ALIGNMENT, AND NEW TIRES. MORE RECENTLY I WAS TOLD THERE ARE MULTIPLE LEAKS IN CONNECTIONS RELATED TO THE WATER PUMP PROBLEM. THERE IS ALSO VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SOUND IS WHEN IDLING IN MY DRIVEWAY; THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION OCCURS WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL STREETS; IT DOES NOT OCCUR WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS.

THE PROBLEMS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED, SOME INFREQUENTLY, SOME OFTEN, INCLUDE: THE ADAPTIVE SPEED CONTROL SILENTLY AND INVISIBLY CEASING TO WORK (BUT ONLY AT TURNPIKE SPEEDS); SOME WINDOWS NOT LOWERING WHILE OTHERS DO; THE PASSENGER OUTSIDE MIRROR NOT DIPPING IN REVERSE; THE DRIVER'S DOOR REFUSING TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE (REQUIRING ME TO CRAWL OVER TO THE PASSENGER DOOR TO EXIT THE CAR); THE TRUNK NOT OPENING WITH THE BUTTON; THE TRUNK NOT CLOSING WITH THE BUTTON; THE RADIO NOT PLAYING (UNTIL THE CAR IS SHUT OFF AND THEN RE-STARTED); THE IGNITION BUTTON NOT TURNING OFF THE CAR ON THE FIRST OR SECOND PUSH; THE SEATS FORGETTING THEIR MEMORY SETTINGS AND REVERTING TO THE DEFAULT SETTINGS WHILST THE CAR IS PARKED AND UNATTENDED; THE ENGINE STARTING AND RUNNING AT 5,000 RPM AND NOT SLOWING DOWN UNLESS TURNED OFF; THE TRUNK OPENING WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING; THE DRIVER'S REAR-VIEW MIRROR NOT EXTENDING WHEN THE DOOR IS UNLOCKED AND OPENED. MANY DAYS THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS; OTHER DAYS MULTIPLE PROBLEMS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT MY DEALER TELLS ME THAT UNLESS THE PROBLEMS ARE CONTINUOUS, THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIX THEM. I THINK THERE MAY BE A COMPUTER OR WIRING PROBLEM. *TR

A customer may report "Hood Open" message displays on IP with hood closed.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
