2007 Jeep Wrangler Fuel system Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the fuel system system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Fuel system reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

In 2022, I paid over $15,000 to an official Jeep dealership (Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM City, Greenwich CT) to replace the engine in my Jeep Wrangler. Without clear disclosure or consent, they installed a non-OEM Jasper remanufactured engine. The invoice misleadingly stated “ALL PARTS ARE NEW UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED,” with no mention of Jasper or warranty terms. The vehicle began malfunctioning almost immediately, raising multiple serious safety concerns, confirmed by written service exchanges: •“The Jeep is stopping alone! Just crazy, brakes come on alone” — 🛑 Spontaneous brake engagement poses a serious crash risk. •“It also smells strong gas when turning the car on” — 🚨 Potential fuel leak or misfire, which is a fire hazard. •“The Jeep is malfunctioning,” “check engine light came back on,” “needs a PCM”, followed by: “I’m not sure this is a computer problem, but the motor you folks placed in the car.” — ⚠️ Suggests deeper integration issues between the engine and vehicle electronics. After only ~8,000 miles, the engine failed again. I spent thousands more with an independent mechanic, who found that several parts supposedly replaced in 2022 were already failing again (spark plugs, oil cooler, manifold gaskets, thermostat). This points to reused components, poor-quality parts, or improper installation. Stellantis refuses to assist, claiming their dealership is “independent,” despite operating under Stellantis branding and authorization. A Stellantis rep confirmed they would only file an internal complaint and left me to handle everything alone. This reflects mechanical negligence, brand-level accountability failures, and clear safety threats. I’m requesting NHTSA investigate: •Post-engine replacement safety hazards and quality of work and materials •Dangerous servicing practices at this authorized dealership (if not many or all of them) •Stellantis’ lack of oversight over branded repairs

Service Bulletin # 14-001-11, dated February 11, 2011 built between March 1, 2007 March 31, 2008 recall on inlet check valve recall. My vehicle was built 08/2006 and does not fall within the dated window however it is experiencing the issue. Gas overflow is not only a cost of money but also a danger to the environment. I am asking for an extension on this recall to include my manufactured year.

Fuel spits out during filling so you have to barely squeeze the pump handle. It takes a long time to just put 20.00 in gas in it sometimes as long as 5 mins. When you live in a cold weather state it becomes an issue when you try to pump it and get splashed with gas because you are trying to get out of the cold. Seems like this would be a health hazard along with a fueling problem.

The contact's girlfriend owns a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while refueling the vehicle, gasoline would spew out of the fuel filler neck. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN and that the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

I bought my 2007 Jeep Wrangler in November 2020. It had approximately 122,000 miles on it and has the 6 speed manual transmission. After driving it for 7 days, I was backing out of a parking spot and heard a loud squeal and was unable to shift gears. It had to have the clutch replaced along with the flywheel and several other clutch associated parts. The total was $1,600. The salesman at the dealership where I bought it told me as I was buying it that there is no warranty but if something happens in the first couple of weeks that he would work with us. Of course he did NOT help me. He wouldn't even return my phone calls. Whatever, buyer beware! Second issue is of course the fuel spit back problem. Every time I fill up, I end up with gas on the Jeep and on the ground. I love wasting money like that. There is apparently a recall on this issue but your website says my vehicle has no recalls. Third issue is all the door hinges are rusting really bad. I saw that there were several service bulletins on the proper procedures for replacing those hinges. Those should be replaced by the dealer at no cost.

WHEN THE JEEP NEEDS REFUELED, IT OVERFLOWS. THE PUMP HANDLE CAN BE MANUALLY OPERATED SO IT CAN PHYSICALLY STOP THE OVERFLOW BUT NOT EVERY TIME. HAPPENS EVERY WEEK USUALLY ON A THURSDAY OR FRIDAY MORNING. 87 OCTANE IS USED AND DOES NOT MATTER WHICH GAS STATION IS CHOSEN AT THE TIME. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE WHEN WE LIVED IN OREGON.

PURCHASED 2007 JEEP WRANGLER IN 2015 AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH FUEL SPLASHING FROM GAS TANK WHEN FILLING UP. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. FUEL SHOULD STOP ONCE TANK IS FULL. I HAVE NOTICED THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MANY JEEP WRANGLER (JK) OWNERS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF A RECALL IS IN EFFECT OR HOW IT CAN BE FIXED. BOTTOM LINE I HAVE CALLED SEVERAL DEALERS INQUIRING ABOUT PART CNNNX321AC, WHICH IS A RECALL PART #, BUT THEY CAN'T SELL IT TO ME. SO, IF I CAN'T BUY THE PART TO FIX AND THEY HAVE NO RECALL ON THE CAR, IS MY ONLY OPTION AT THIS POINT TO SUE THE CHRYSLER CORPORATION? THIS IS A CAR MY DAUGHTER DRIVES AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE NOT JUST SOME SUPERFICIAL ISSUE WITH JEEP. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME SHE GOES TO THE GAS STATION TO FILL THE JEEP. SMELLING LIKE PETROLEUM AFTER EVERY FILLING OF TANK IS NOT THE RIGHT ANSWER. *TR

EVERY TIME I FILL UP THE FUEL TANK LEAKS DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITION AND ESPECIALLY WHILE MAKING TURNS OR IF PARKED IT WILL LEAK IN THE PARKING SPOT AS THE DAY GETS WARMER. THERE IS ALSO A VERY STRONG FUEL SMELL DURING THIS TIMES AND VERY NOTICEABLE BY EVERYONE IN THE JEEP OR AROUND IT.

FUEL SPILLS OUT OF FUEL TANKL FILLING PORT AFTER FUEL DISPENSING EQUIPMENT AUTOMATICALLY STOPS. FUEL DISPENSING PUMP SAFETY FEATHERS INCOMPATIBLE WITH JEEP GAS TANK FUEL FILLING DESIGN.THIS PRESENTS DANGEROUS CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN WITH EVERY FUEL FILL UP REGARDLESS OF GAS STATION RAN OR EQUIPMENT. IT'S ALMOST AS IF FUEL VILUME GREATLY INCREASES AFTER GAS DISPENSER STOPS FUELING. I JUST BOUGHT THE JEEP ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. I TOOK IT TO THE GAS STATION AND WALKED AWAY TO CLEAN THE WINDOWS WHILE IT WAS FILLING UP. I LOOK OVER AND GAS IS SPEWING OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE. I THOUGHT IT WAS A BAD GAS PUMP. ON THE NEXT FILL UP, IT DID IT AGAIN. I LOOKED ON GOOGLE AND I FIND THAT CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS AND HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THIS. ON SOME OF THEIR OTHER VEHICLES BUT NOT THIS ONE. I AM HOPING THAT NOT ONLY CAN YOU GET CHRYSLER TO FIX MINE, BUT FORCE TO TO DO A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.

EVERYIME THIS VEHICLE IS FUELED FULL AT THE GAS PUMP, IT WILL NOT SHUT OFF WHEN THE TANK IS FULL. THIS RESULTS IN AN OVERFLOW OF GASOLINE, EVERYWHERE...ON MY HANDS, DOWN THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE AND PUDDLES ON THE GROUND. THERE IS NO WARNING AND THE ONLY WAY I AM ABLE TO FILL THE TANK IS BY TURNING THE ENGINE ON AND WATCHING THE MILEAGE INCREASE ON THE DISTANCE TO EMPTY (DTE) DISPLAY ON MY DASH.... WHICH IS NOT SAFE TO DO. IT OCCURS EVERYTIME I FILL UP MY JEEP. THERE IS NO RECALL TO FIX THIS ISSUE. IT'S BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE I PURCHASED MY JEEP IN MARCH 2010.

THIS VEHICLE FREQUENTLY EXPERIENCES FUEL "SPIT-BACK" ON FILLING. IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 10/06, FIVE MONTHS BEFORE THE DATE IN JEEP'S LIFETIME FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT EXTENDED GUARANTY FOR SPIT-BACK. ALSO, THE TANK BEGAN LEAKING AFTER EVERY FILL UP. IT LEAKED ON THE GROUND AND/OR WITH GAS FUMES PRESENT UNTIL THE TANK LEVEL GOT BELOW 1/2 TANK THE LEAK SOURCE WAS WHERE THE FUEL PUMP IS INSERTED INTO THE TOP OF TANK. THE IRON CLAMPS AND LOCK RING FOR THE FUEL PUMP ARE LOCATED IN A DEPRESSED "BOWL" AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. WATER ACCUMULATES AND REMAINS IN THE BOWL CAUSING THE LOCK RING AND CLAMPS TO RUST. THE RUST EXPANDS AND CRACKS THE PLASTIC THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS MADE OF. THE REPAIR REQUIRES REPLACING THE FUEL TANK, LOCK RING, AND FUEL PUMP. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING PROBLEM AND THESE CONDITIONS CAUSE SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY PROBLEMS. I INFORMED JEEP (CASE NUMBER 30126422) ON 9/15/16 AND THEY DECLINED TO DO ANYTHING. I HAVE SPENT $1,019.60 ON EMERGENCY AND PERMANENT REPAIRS. PHOTOS OF THE TANK AS IT WAS REMOVED FROM THE JEEP SHOWING "THE BOWL" AND RUST, RUSTED CLAMPS, AND CRACKED FUEL PUMP ARE ATTACHED. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I CAN PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.
