Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

  • Fuel system375.0%
  • Driver assistance125.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE TO COMMUTE TO WORK ON CITY STREETS, I COULD SMELL GASOLINE. WHEN STOPPED AT A REDLIGHT, I LOOKED AT THE TOP OF THE TANK AND GAS WAS COMING OUT OF THE TOP OF THE TANK FROM AROUND THE CAP MOUNT/SEAL IS BOLTED TO THE TANK. THIS TANK IS A REPLACEMENT THAT KTM PUT ON ABOUT A YEAR AGO AFTER HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE BEFORE. I KNOW KTM PUT OUT A RECALL ON LATER MODELS, 2015 AND LATER I THINK, THAT WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE MY REPLACEMENT TANK FROM KTM IS ONE OF THE CORRECTED TANKS. NOW, I'M ON MY 2ND TANK WITH THE SAME PROBLEM OF GASOLINE COMING FROM THE TOP OF IT AND SPILLING ONTO THE MOTOR. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.. *TT

Crash reported

THE MOTORCYCLE STALLS VERY OFTEN MOST PROMINENTLY WHEN BRAKING AGGRESSIVELY AND PULLING IN THE CLUTCH TO STOP. THE BIKE WILL ALSO SOMETIMES STALL RANDOMLY WHEN OPERATING AT ENGINE SPEEDS BELOW 3,000 RPM. THE THROTTLE RESPONSE IS ALSO EXTREMELY JERKY BELOW 4,000 RPM LIKE AN ON/OFF SWITCH MAKING THE MOTORCYCLE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO RIDE. I HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH 2008 KTM 690 SMC AND IN NEARLY A DECADE, THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. UNACCEPTABLE.

THE FUEL TANK LEAKS FROM THE GAS CAP. ALSO, THIS IS NOT MY FIRST KTM, WHICH HAS HAD A LEAKING GAS CAP. IT'S MY 3RD ONE. THIS ISSUE IS VERY WELL-DOCUMENTED ON THE FORUMS AS WELL AS ON YOUTUBE. GASOLINE POURS RIGHT OUT OF THE GAS CAP ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS FULL OR WHEN ACCELERATING OR DECELERATING BRISKLY. I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN THIS IS AN ISSUE TO DO WITH THE HIGH ETHANOL CONTENT PRESENT IN ALL U.S. GAS. THE STANDARD FUEL IS E10, WHICH MEANS 90% GASOLINE AND 10% ETHANOL. THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST DUCATI IN THE PAST FOR THIS ISSUE ALTHOUGH IT HAS CROPPED WITH OTHER MANUFACTURERS. THE ISSUE ARISES FROM A REACTION WITH ETHANOL IN PLASTIC TANKS. IT IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH METAL TANKS. MOST MANUFACTURERS HAVE FIXED THE ISSUE OR STOPPED USING THE PLASTIC. HOWEVER, KTM REMAINS A MAJOR PROBLEM AS SEEN ABOVE. EVEN THE NEWEST 2016 AND 2017 MODELS HAVE THE SAME ISSUES, WHICH ARE AGAIN DOCUMENTED IN THE FORUMS. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND DANGEROUS. *TT *JS

THIS BEING MY 2ND GAS TANK FROM KTM, AFTER EACH TIME I FILL THE GAS TANK WITH FUEL AND CONTINUING UNTIL THE TANK IS LESS THAN HALF FULL, WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE, FUEL IS FORCED OUT ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE TANK FROM AROUND THE MOUNTING PLATE/SYSTEM WHERE THE GAS CAP ASSEMBLY IS MOUNTED TO THE TOP OF THE TANK, AND THE GAS RUNS DOWN THE TANK AND ON TOP OF THE MOTOR. EVEN WHEN PARKED AND NOT RUNNING, GAS FUMES ARE COMING THROUGH THE MOUNTING SYSTEM. IT APPEARS THAT THE MOUNTING PLATE OF THE TANK IS WARPING BECAUSE OF THE PLASTIC TANK, NOT ALLOWING THE GASKET BETWEEN THE TWO MOUNTING POINTS OF THE TANK AND THE CAP MOUNTING ASSEMBLY TO SEAL PROPERLY. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, I'VE FOUND A FORUM WITH AN 8 PAGE THREAD OF COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM OF THIS TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE. Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
