2024 Mazda CX-90 Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Mazda dealership confirmed my car completed the Recall 24V-022, however, I am still experiencing a Sticky steering wheel. A sudden, brief increase in steering effort, a "notchy" or binding feel during minor lane corrections or long highway curves, and failure of the wheel to smoothly return to center.

Following the previous steering recall we noticed that the steering wheel had started to stick when turning. We brought it in for maintenance and to have them look at the steering. It has been identified as an internal failure of the steering rack.

Campaign 6524A Recall was completed in JUNE 2024. The recall repair has now failed and the steering is sticking/malfunctioning when you turn the steering wheel. Reliable Mazda dealership in Springfield Missouri informed me yesterday the recall was already completed and now I will be responsibility for the bill to repair the failed RECALL repair. Which the repair was a new spring and grease.... The car is not safe to drive. The steering wheel sticks and you have to forcefully jerk the wheel to center the steering wheel again. We do not have the money to pay nearly $4,000 to repair a failed recall that Mazda should take care of.

When curving left my steering wheel will get “stuck”. It becomes heavy and then jerks back like it just “unlocked”. I haven’t had to pull it back forcefully, yet, but I’m sure it’s not far off. Went to Mazda dealership who state it’s mechanically related to a rack and pinion within the steering components. My car was part of the initial “sticky steering” recall which the previous owner had done in March of 2024. Happy to allow inspection if needed. My safety, along with the safety of others, is at risk anytime I travel along a curve where I could cross into on coming traffic because I am unable to forcefully move my steering wheel out of the “sticking” position. Potentially deadly. Mainly notice it around speeds of 45+ regardless of weather.

"Sticky Steering" was fixed under a recall during a previous owner of my car. The issue has reappeared causing the steering wheel to stick when making turns or adjustments. The steering wheel often fails to retun to center on its own while driving down the road, and requires force to unstick it. This obviously creates a safety risk as the steering can be unpredictable while driving. The issue has not yet been inspected as I am waiting to find out if it will be addressed under warranty, though it is a known issue and concern with this vehicle. Not warnings or messages have appeared prior to this issue.

The contact owns a 2024 Mazda CX-90. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, several warning messages were displayed on the instrument panel, including the electronic stability control and the check engine warning lights. Later, while driving, the power steering failed, causing the steering wheel to become difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was driven to a local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failures. The contact was informed that the battery would not remain charged. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 29,000.

On May 2, 2026, I took my 2024 Mazda CX‑90 to Mazda of Orange because the steering wheel was getting stuck and there was a loud chirping noise when turning the car on and off. The dealership kept my car for 28 days. When I picked it up, they told me the noise was fixed. After three days, the noise returned. The next morning, the car would not start, so I had to jump it and take it back. They said it was the brake assembly line and claimed it was safe to drive when it wasn’t. They also said the bottom battery was giving errors. I had already replaced the top battery in April 2026 for $300, and they replaced the bottom one under warranty. When I brought it in, all dashboard warning lights were on, and the car warned me not to drive over 30 mph. They replaced the battery again but could not explain the warning lights. This was my sixth visit, and they kept blaming rain or fog even when the weather was clear. Two weeks after getting the car back, all warning lights came on again on [XXX]. At [XXX], while taking my husband to the airport, I was afraid to turn the car off. I hit a bump, the lights turned off, then came back on — which makes me think there is an electrical short. Now the transmission jerks hard, especially when the i‑Stop activates. I bought the car in April 2025; it has 47,700 miles, and I have taken it in six times. [XXX] from the mediation department told me he would start a buyback on June 20, 2026, but he is now ignoring my calls. Following the remedy performed under recall 24V-022, the steering continues to exhibit intermittent issues. The wheel occasionally feels suddenly heavy or resistant, with a sticky, stiff sensation that builds gradually before returning to normal. This is most noticeable at speeds between 15–25 mph while simultaneously turning, such as navigating parking lots, intersections, or slow cornering. The issue also occurs unpredictably with no consistent trigger outside of those conditions. The problem persists despite the recall repair having been completed. The vehicle will be taken to local Mazda dealership (Modesto Mazda) to have re-inspected of issue.

Few months after the steering recall we started experiencing issues with increased resistance while turning the steering wheel. Sometimes the steering is not very smooth. Was told the solutuon to this issue was a other repair that was not covered under the recall. Unfortunately we are past the 36k mile warranty.

Just purchased this vehicle and find the steering to be tight, jerky, and when on the freeway and there is a connector joint where two sections of road meet the vehicle veers almost to the next lane. And when applying the brakes when exiting at freeway speed brakes shudder. The vehicle has had the recall #6524A done but the steering is still dangerous. Brake fix is supposed to be addressed soon by Mazda. Vehicle is a lemon.

There is momentary increase in steering effort during the drive cycle in model year (MY) 2024 Mazda CX-90 vehicle. Sometimes, I have to push too hard when turning the steering back from a turn. This problem was initially fixed on my vehicle by a recall campaign(24V-022 ) in 2024, but the issue has now reappeared.

While driving, the vehicle experiences dangerous episodes of what is widely known as "sticky steering." Specifically, when initiating a sweeping left-hand turn, the steering wheel hits a point of sudden mechanical resistance, requiring an unexpected and sudden increase in steering effort to turn the wheel. When trying to maintain or exit the turn, this resistance causes the steering wheel to bind and pull to the right, requiring forceful manual over-correction to keep the vehicle in its lane and prevent a crash. This is an intermittent but recurring mechanical failure that completely disrupts smooth steering operation. It matches the exact profile of the ongoing NHTSA Recall Query into the failure of Mazda's original Recall 24V022 (Campaign 6524A) remedy.
