1994 Mercury Grand Marquis Interior & seats Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the interior system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Interior & seats reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

1994 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS: DURING A DRIVE AT NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN TO FILICKER AT FIRST (ALONG WITH INTERIOR PANEL LIGHTS); THIS WAS ONLY INTERMITTENT, AND COULD BE SOLVED WITH PRECISE PLACEMENT OF THE PULL SWITCH. WITHIN 10 DAYS, THE FILCKERING WAS UNCONTROLLABLE AND NO LONGER INTERMITTANT. I OPENED UP THE DASH-BOARD TO POTENTIALLY REMOVE THE SWITCH FOR REPLACEMENT. ONCE I HAD ACCESS, I TURNED ON THE LIGHTS AND BEGAN TO MANEUVER THE WIRING TO 4658078 ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND STOP THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO CHECK FOR A LOOSE CONNECTION. AS I WAS REACHIG AROUND THE WIRING, I FELT A VERY HOT WIRE; UPON INSPECTION, I DISCOVERED THAT THE WIRE IN QUESTION WAS BURNED UP TO 1/4 " PAST THE CONNECTOR (EXPOSING ALL OF THE WIRE FIBERS) AND THE CONNECTOR ITSELF AT THAT POINT WAS CHARRED, WARPED, AND BLISTERED. I HAVEN'T REPAIRED IT AT THIS TIME.*AK

FORD MOTOR CO. HAS ISSUED TOW TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON A FRONT SEAT PROBLEM THAT REPORTS A LOOSE FRONT SEAT FLOOR REINFORCEMENT BRACKET THAT CRACKS (TSB NUMBER 98-24-5 AND 94182). THIS PROBLEM CAUSES THE FRONT SEAT TO COME LOOSE AND THE SEAT WILL RELEAST IN CASE OF A CRASH INCLUDING A REAR-END COLLISION. THIS CAN RESULT IN SEVERE INJURIES TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS. THEY DO NOT INFORM THE VEHICLE OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL THREAT AND, WHILE RECOGNIZING THE MANUFACTURING DEFECT, REQUIRE THE CUSTOMER TO PAY THE REPAIR COST.*AK

THE DRIVER'S SEAT FRONT LEFT MOUNT BROKE LOOSE FROM THE FRAME WHEN ENTERING THE CAR. THE BOLT WAS LEFT IN THE TRACK RAIL AND THE NUT FROM THE SEAT FRAME WAS STILL ATTACHED. THE SEAT FRAME NUT PULLED THROUGH THE FRAME ALLOWING THE SEAT TO FLOP BACKWARDS. THIS ALSO CAUSED THE SEAT-BACK TO GO BACK ONE NOTCH AND IS NOW STRIPPED WHERE IT WILL NOT LOCK INTO THE MOST UPRIGHT POSITION.*AK
