NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
GASOLINE LEAKS
THIS INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED ON DECEMBER 30, 2009, BASED ON FIVE CONSUMER REPORTS ALLEGING GASOLINE FUEL LEAKING FROM THE FUEL FILL PIPE.SOME OF THE COMPLAINANTS INDICATED THE FUEL FILL PIPE HAD CORRODED TO THE POINT OF BEING PERFORATED, ALLOWING FUEL TO LEAK FROM THE PIPE.BY LETTER OF FEBRUARY, 24, 2010, AND AMENDED MARCH 10, 2010, MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA (MITSUBISHI) NOTIFIED THE AGENCY THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL OF APPROXIMATELY 26,135 SUBJECT VEHICLES.THE RECALLED VEHICLES WERE SOLD OR ARE CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING SALT BELT STATES : CT, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WV, WI, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.MITSUBISHI WILL ALSO INCLUDE IN THE RECALL THE FOLLOWING COLD CLIMATE STATES: ND, SD, NB, KS, OK, CO, WY, MT, ID, WA, OR, AND UT.MITIUBISHI STATES THAT A MIXTURE OF MUD AND ROAD SALT CAN BECOME TRAPPED BETWEEN A REINFORCING BRACKET AND THE FILL PIPE AND LEAD TO CORROSION OF THE FILL PIPE, RESULTING IN LEAKS DURING REFUELING.FOR SUBJECT VEHICLES NOT IN SALT BELT OR COLD STATES (APPROXIMATELY 28,077), MITSUBISHI WILL EXTEND THE WARRANTY OF THE FUEL FILL PIPE TO 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
IGNITION-PARK INTERLOCK SYSTEM
THE SUBJECT VEHICLE IGNITION-PARK INTERLOCK AND SHIFT LOCK (BRAKE-SHIFT INTERLOCK) SYSTEMS ARE MECHANICALLY ACTUATED.THE SYSTEMS UTILIZE TWO CABLE ASSEMBLIES THAT CONNECT TO A PLASTIC HOUSING MOUNTED TO THE SHIFT LEVER MECHANISM.WITHIN THE HOUSING IS A LEVER (INTERLOCK LEVER) THAT THE IGNITION-PARK INTERLOCK CABLE CONNECTS TO.WHEN THE INTERLOCK LEVER IS POSITIONED IN ITS REARWARD TRAVEL RANGE, THE IGNITION KEY REMOVAL IS PREVENTED; WHEN THE LEVER IS POSITIONED IN ITS FORWARD POSITION, KEY REMOVAL IS ALLOWED.ACCORDING TO MITSUBISHI, THE IGNITION KEY INTERLOCK CABLE MAY ALLOW THE INTERLOCK LEVER TO FALL FORWARD DURING VEHICLE USE.IN THIS STATE THE IGNITION KEY CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH WHEN THE GEARSHIFT MECHANISM IS NOT IN THE PARK POSITION.IF THE DRIVER DOES NOT SHIFT TO PARK BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.MOST OF THE REPORTED CRASH INCIDENTS WERE MINOR IN NATURE INVOLVING UNOCCUPIED VEHICLES ROLLING FROM A PARKED CONDITION AND STRIKING OTHER VEHICLES OR OBJECTS.THE SINGLE INJURY INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THE OPERATOR PARKED THE VEHICLE, EXITED, AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY STRUCK BY THE VEHICLE AS IT ROLLED AWAY.THE TYPE AND SEVERITY OF THE INJURIES WERE NOT DESCRIBED.IN A LETTER DATED MARCH 21, 2008, MITSUBISHI ADVISED NHTSA THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION (SEE WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV, RECALL ACTION 08V-139 FOR FURTHER DETAILS); REMEDY DETAILS AND TIMING ARE TO BE DETERMINED.ACCORDINGLY THE INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED.

CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER PUMPING FUEL IN - TOOK TO MECHANIC; HE SAID BATTERY FINE FEW DAYS LATER, CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER PUMPING FUEL IN - TOOK TO MECHANIC; HE SAID BATTERY BAD. I REPLACED BATTERY. FEW DAYS LATER, CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER PUMPING FUEL IN - TOOK TO MECHANIC; HE SAID NEW BATTERY FINE. SINCE CAR DID NOT START 3 TIMES IN A ROW AFTER PUMPING GAS, AND I NEEDED A JUMP EVERY TIME, I HAD MECHANIC DO A DIAGNOSTIC. HE SAID THE ISSUE WAS TIED TO A RECALL BULLETIN. 10V065000 - FILLER PIPE AND CAP. CALLED MITSUBISHI TO FIX IT BUT THEY SAID MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE I AM STATE OF CALIFORNIA. I DO A LOT OF MY DRIVING IN SNOW SO I FEEL MITSUBISHI SHOULD FIX THIS FOR ME. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD SO I NEED TO FIX IT ASAP (PLUS I DON'T WANT TO GET STUCK AT A GAS STATION AGAIN NEEDING A JUMP). I'D LIKE MITSUBISHI TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THIS EXPENSE BECAUSE NOW I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
